A really good friend of Stella and I was involved in a serious bicycling accident about five weeks ago.
Joe Neer is the friend in need.
Joe rides his bicycle everywhere.
Going to meet a friend for breakfast across town. Yep. Drive? No. Taxi? No. Train? No? Bike? YES!
Going to meet a friend at the library across town. Yep. Drive? No. Taxi? No. Train? No? Bike? YES!
Going to meet a friend for a drink across town. Yep. Drive? No. Taxi? No. Train? No? Bike? YES!
Riding your bike for 6,000 miles a year just because you can? Yep, that's how Joe rolls.
Riding in the el Tour de Tucson (109 mile route) at age 69? Why not, he's done it a few times before!
Crashing really hard at mile four of el Tour....not expected by anyone.
Spending a few weeks in ICU recovering from said wreck...totally out of the question.
Needing a ride home on a private jet not covered by insurance...never thought it would come to this.
Helping out a stranger in need?? The DMF has always stepped up to the challenge.

Don't have any money to spare but when my stuff on cg/ebay that I was putting toward bike bling is all yours when it sells.
Jill and I wish your friend a speedy recovery
My humble currency is usually worthless. But not today.
Its already more than enough to be rocked by injury without being slugged for air-ambulance ???. Move to a civilised country will ya! [cheeky] ;). In the mean time I'm glad offer a little help.
Nobody ever mention that riding bikes at high speed is dangerous?!? ... oh.. wait... never mind......

It won't be much, but a few bucks on the way.
As I recall a few years ago someone did the math...
If every DMF'r (I think at the time it was DML'r) contributed just $2.00...
'Cept this time it is for a good cause.
Hope for his full and speedy recovery. [thumbsup]
done (and tweeted forward).
Happy dance!!!
Thank you!!!!
This deserves a bump up.

Thanks, Charlie!
Actually, thanks to many of you DMFers and others, the support has been beyond fantastic! [thumbsup]
Stella and I stopped by to see Joe the other night at his new digs. He still has a ways to go until he can be transferred to a rehab hospital, but he is doing quite well!
Thanks again!

And an update: Joe was upright for the first time yesterday working with PT's. Briefly but still upright. Interestingly, he laughs a lot. He always did before the accident because it was his nature but his care providers say even when they're doing things that cause discomfort, he's smiling away or laughing.
Yesterday they also started giving him ice chips to test his swallowing ability. It went ok until he started to laugh. Then he started gagging (not necessarily a bad thing).
Once he can manage swallowing (and who knows what else), he can be taken off the trach tube. Then he'll go to rehab hospital down the road.
It is amazing how much he's progressed in a week since coming back home. Coincidence? I don't think so.
