Title: Ducati monster from old to new(er)
Post by: mors vito on February 10, 2011, 01:15:20 PM
Here is the story:

Pictures are after the story.

I bought my 1997 Ducati monster 750 in late August, a week before I went off to school, I still rode it a few times, and I love it! But I did no modding before I went to school but I had money from the bike I previously sold, aka mod money. So over the last few months I have built up a stock pile of mods that I have yet to put on. I have gone home twice since I left, but it was too cold to really do anything.  But now my mom has our new garage built (heated) and it is starting to warm up enough where I can mod. I also have spring break coming up, and guess what I'm doing? That's right spending the entire time working on the Duc in the garage. This is March 7-13. So expect a post sometime after that with pictures and a movie or two, as I just bought a GoPro HD camera. So I will be making a timelapse of some sort of me installing everything hence the name (from old to new(er)). I will also be making a movie of a exhaust comparison from stock to the danmoto exhaust. Onboard movies will come this spring/summer.

all the mods I have:

Driven clip-ons
Rizoma grips and bar ends
Frame sliders
Vapor Stealth gauge and dummy lights
Bikemonkey LED brake light
Master brake cylinder
Sport touring gel seat
Rizoma mirrors
Danmoto dual carbon fiber slip-on exhaust
Fren Tubo Stainless Steel brake lines
Clear Brembo brake fluid tubing
K&N Oil filter
and more...(oils and seals)
paint (don't worry I'm a somewhat experienced painter)
Ducabike rearsets

most of the things I have to do in that week (may not be in exact order):

Remove tank pad, Tail chop, Change oil.
The "Mike Qube" paint job, black as there is a acid stain in the same spot:

Lift bike
Put support on engine and install frame sliders
Remove Front forks
Replace Fork oil and seals, Remove/paint rotor, Put back on and install clip-ons
Remove rear spring, paint and put back on
Un-lift bike
Bleed brake fluid
Paint calipers
Install calipers, brake lines and all hand controls
Install gauge and mirrors
Fix surface rust under tank
remove and wash headers
Remove rearsets and install new ones
Put headers back on and install new exhaust
Install seat
Wash

Now for some phone pics:

The day I got it: with my old bike 2008 Kawasaki ninja 250r, not me on it.

About what it looked like at thanksgiving, since then I removed the rear hugger and side panels

I removed the speedo cable that is wrapped around the fork, after I took the pic

This was to give me an idea on what the danmoto exhaust looked like, I didn't install it. Since I'll have ducabike rearsets the exhaust will most likely be facing up some more.

This is a clip of me turning on the vapor gauge (turning on the bike, not starting it), to see if I got the wire splicing right, dummy lights didn't work but I got them to work after. I didn't install it. Took it off afterward like the exhaust.

My GoPro movies will be on youtube not photobucket like this one.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for my post around the 13th of March, lots of pics and clips :D.

I'm interested in the exhaust vid. For the price and looks, you can't beat it.

Looking good!

Only one week till I get my grubby little hands on my bike, and you all get your grubby little eyes on the modding pictures.

Here is a pic of my bike to what it may look like once im done, or at least close to it as this was done in paint. Also the calipers and rotor wont be as displayed because I forgot about insurance which is due soon and that will deplete most of the cash I have leaving me short of where I wanted to be. So i'm going to hold off on that until I get new rotors this summer. I also didnt do anything to the handle bar region in the pic and I didn't add a exhaust hanger, but you all get the idea.

What frame sliders did you get? I have the same bike as you and have been having a hell of a time finding sliders for it. It seems the 97 doesn't use the single long bolt that goes from one side to the other, but a separate bolt on each side of the engine. I haven't been able to find a set anywhere that uses the separate.

I got them off ebay for like $97, they are still up, and I havent installed them yet but I placed it inside the bike, and it looks like it will be long enough

Is it the one long bolt or the two separate?

one long one

The one long one didn't work on my 97 M750, mine has a separate bolt on each side.

Are you planning on keeping the original serifed font on the tank, and the "Monster" label?  I love that from the nineties Monsters.

Sounds like you're going to have a fun week!  [beer]

Some new bolts and strong stainless steel strip with holes from the local hardware store... looks great
got one side done

and got the right handle bar done, i got to move the front forks up a little so the clip-ons can clamp the whole fork also still need to do some adjustment on the throttle, as it is a little stiff

Then a question for anyone with ducabike rearsets or any aftermarket rearsets
Where do you put the reservoir, or did you make a new place to put it (post a pic if you can)?

im not trying to put you down just gonna offer up my opinion...I think you can come up with something better to hang the exhaust from, I just dont like that it looks so homemade... like i said just my opinion but i know you can search around for a cleaner looking bracket. I would say make the beast with two backs it and ditch the hanger and maybe put a small tack weld on the underside and maybe the top of the can where it meets the exhaust pipe. then try some kind of bracket on the pipe to keep the vibration down. Im not an expert and someone will probably tell me how stupid the idea is but thats what i would do.

I'd do it a little differently too.

That bracket isn't very rugged to hold the can at that angle.

A piece of aluminum strip, also available at the hardware store, and a strap clamp on the frame above the can would be stronger and better looking IMO.

ya after looking at the pics I was thinking the same, but for the time being it will work.

+1 On using the aluminum strip.  Its almost as easy to work with.  Use a mallot to put the bends in it over bench edge, vise etc. then have it powder coated.  Maybe add some holeds for looks, weight saving, etc.

Obviously it has been said, but that steel strap looks like sh!t.  Sorry to say it that way, but looks like a temporary thing because the original hangar broke, not an improvement to make the bike look newer/better.  Also, your hardware choice isn't right either.  Those look zinc-plated or galvanized hardware.  Should be oxide coated or anodized hardware.  Ballerbolts.com is a good choice, and go with metric hex head hardware in black, not shiney like that- doesn't look like an improvement, it looks like you lost a bolt and that is all you could find.

Hate to be a jerk, but saying it like it is.  I assume you wanted critique or you wouldn't have shared here.

A little cheezy but four years later it's still working.

Update!!!!
sorry for the wait if you were waiting

My Bike wouldn't start, and I thought it was the battery and it was fine, checked the starter motor to find that one of the brushes was in 10 pieces and scattered throughout. So I ordered a rebuild kit and it should be here in the next few days.

In terms of having a good exhaust hanger:
I got some nice p-clamps of ebay and put them on the frame, they work well but I'm still looking for a better hanger but the current one will do for now, very sturdy now that it's connected to the frame, Thanks for the advice guys.

I also replaced the rear set bolts with some nice black hex wrench ones that fit better, again thanks for the advice. I also screwed the rear brake reservoir to the hanger.

I still need help with the brake side rear set. I can't find a way to put a spring on it so it will recoil back. So my question would be which kind of spring do you use with your aftermarket rear sets for ducabike or any other, did you buy a new one or use one of the springs from the stock foot controls? Pictures please if you have them.

still need to:
replace fork seals
cut frame for license plate braket
install speedo and tach cables, will do after fork seals finished
clean

...and some pictures. I'll post the p-clamp and hanger pictures after I get my rebuild kit.
