Title: Pink Floyd / David Gilmour
Post by: DoubleEagle on February 19, 2011, 10:25:10 PM
I just watched a 2 disc set of a DVD of David Gilmour " Live at the Albert Hall "

He had Richard Wright ( Pink Floyd's Organist ) playing Organ and singing .

I didn't know any of the other guys in the band but they were all very 1st rate.

It's kind of amazing how many different musical instruments David can play.

To see him wailing Pink Floyd licks on a Saxaphone ...or picking along on a 12 string Banjo.

David did have Crosby and Nash there singing on a couple of songs from his latest CD "  On an Island " which he included in the live performances ...as well as Pink Floyd Favs on which David Bowie sang on 2 of them.

The light show was tremendous...at times it looked like the end of the world !

The backstage, back home, studio scenes and travel filming were as good as the live performance filming I thought.

Like any good " Musical Icon " worth his salt, at 64 he has a pretty , younger wife.

Her name is Polly and manages to be in most of the film other than the live performances.

Plus there were a lot of performances from different tour venues across Europe that David Gilmour and his Band did.

I would give this 2 disc DVD set 5 *****.

I would give David Gilmour a rating of ....Genius !

hmmm, mental note on this one
That would be another good thing to pick that both my wife and I can enjoy, then again we have almost the same wide ranging tastes so almost everything I get is a win.
Definitely be looking for it in BluRay as the sound quality is usually amazing that way.  [thumbsup]

ive stated before how big of a fan of floyd i am, but david gilmours pink floyd just isnt the same as syd barrett's or roger waters pink floyd. The things that waters came up with is the reason why everybody loves the music. syds stuff is really amazing too, Almost childish and innocent even though its on the verge of falling apart and revealing its true motivation. Pink floyd is the music that has shaped my life and would not be sitting here today if it wasnt for it. It started me playing guitar 15 years ago which led me to play in a band where i met my wife, had kids, moved here, and bought my bike. the whole time floyd has been the soundtrack. Ive seen waters 3 times and many countless tribute bands. ive gotten a huge tattoo on my back of the screaming face from the wall, and ive named my first son barrett after syd. I found out the day after i settled on his name that syd had died that night, kind of wierd i think, also the day after i got married i read the newspaper in my hotel room and it happened to be the 1st anniversary of his death.but i digress...I have the dvd and I think its pretty good

I went through a phase where I was pretty obsessed with Pink Floyd. Hell, my high school thesis / dissertation was on The Wall.

Still love the Floyd. Gilmour has a sound all his own.  [thumbsup]

I have to admit, however, that my favorite Floyd is the period from Wish You Were Here through Final Cut.

That's amazing .....that she is writing 1/2 his lyrics .

They sound just like what David would write to me.

Thanks for that info mother.

Jesus,

If you appreciate Genius ....and music ( and I know you do ) this DVD is superb !

It's not pretentious at all which is one of the great things about David Gilmour ...and his band.

Disc 2 has a lot of back stage and travel video that is really interesting.

I can't think of a better muscian after seeing this DVD !

I too have loved Floyd from Ummagumma back in the late 60s.

The difference to me is in this DVD you are seeing a Genius musician at work in his late 50s.( filmed in '06-'07 )

In the early years we saw the birth of a band full of life , energy and experimentation.

A lot of us who were around back then were as the band was.

It was all new , alive and full of energy.

It took us places we'd never been before.

David is now like a bottle of fine wine.

Aged to perfection.

I think he feels Gilmour's wife is too old Dolph.

It happens when someone is young and has difficulty understanding.

I seem to remember some people thinking he was too old for something.

I guess it's all perspective.

Nate,

I don't know what he is too old for?

In watching the DVD it is very evident that David hasn't lost any of his skill as a Guitarist...maybe even gotten better !

He has 4 children w Polly so I think he is still virile.

His new music is exploratory , edgey and is in the vain of Pink Floyd sound and Lyric.

He has lost most all of his hair .....can't hold that against him.

Perspective is indeed at work here

This comment IMO

Illegitimizes the womans significant contribution to Gilmour's music

if she was indeed just arm candy she would be 26 not 49

I heard this Song in a friends car once, I had never heard of Pink Floyd, I fell in love with the music the 1st time I heard it
and have been a fan ever since.

This Song was the 1st I had ever heard of from Pink Floyd, it will always be a favorite.

And the official "Pulse" DVD is a personal favorite, I have seen it Hundreds of times and I still get Goosebumps everytime
I watch it.

Gilmour is an awesome guitarist, but Waters was always the genius. I collected every album on cd and vinyl heading through puberty and even painted the screaming head from the wall on my ceiling (mom was unhappy but appreciated the art of it) as well as many other surfaces and stood in line for about 5 hours to spend my entire expendable cash (hey, I was 14) on Waters' tickets... so I consider myself a bit of an authority on the subject  :)

The only problem is that after your grow out of your self indulgent stage, Waters' lyrics just leave you feeling a bit too much like a whiny little pregnant dog sometimes... and that's where Gilmour's guitar comes in. Either way, they were a hell of a team and a sad remnant of it solo. sad that I never got to see Wright perform though  :-\

on that note, @spankyduc, "Learning to Fly" is a damn good song, but its NOT Floyd.

Actually, he only lets her write the prepositions and adverbs.  Plus, I hear he gets quite upset at the sight of a dangling participle.

Very true. It's a decent song on its own, but it's not really Floyd material. One of those radio anomalies.

My tastes tend more toward the obscure, and I have a thing for well-done covers.

The Blue Man Group does a phenomenal cover of "One Of These Days" if you get the chance to see their "How To Be A Megastar" show. I give it as many thumbs up as I have at my disposal. Right now, that's three.  [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

Funny, I thought the Wall was the worst album they produced as a group.

Listen to some "Floydian Propulsion Project" for some interesting variations on some of PF's best work.

When my neighbor popped in a cassette  [thumbsup] of The Wall, I was totally blown away. I couldn't keep my ear off Run Like Hell and David's sound.

After  [bow_down] following them, and reaching back to their early material and checking out their videotapes  [thumbsup] (Live at Pompeii blew me away), I'd have to say the direction of the band under Waters went a little too far on the darker, dreary side (Final Cut comes to mind). Yeah, Waters' lyrics were notable, but the Floyd sound was missing. Thanks for the rescue by David IMO.
