I just had a Kidney Stone attack last night.
I took a piss and then it started...
A dull pain in my lower left side at 1st , then shooting pain out the end of my Penis.
I thought I'd better get to the ER , I'd had an attack about 3 years ago on the very night that I crashed my bike and was only home from the ER for about 2 hours when it hit me ...I was taking Vicodin for my broken Ribs and other damaged body parts but it barely dulled the pain of the attack.
I passed the stone 4 days later.
Last night I didn't have any thing like Vicodin for the pain so I took 4 Advils and gutted it out .
I drank a lot of Gatorade thinking it might help move the stone along .
When I finally had to piss I still have the plastic expandable cup w, the screen in the bottom so I pissed in it and sure enough I pissed the stone out.
Any body else have problems w, the " stones " and have you found any way to either prevent them...or make passing the stones easier...today I'm hurtin' in the Kidney area.
Had the pain been as severe as the attack my 1st time ( when I was taking the Vicodin for my post crash injuries ), I don't think I could have driven to the ER had I not had something likke Vicodin. :(

Out of curiosity, why do you want to go through the trouble of peeing into a cup w/ a screen in the bottom and save the stone?

To mount that make the beast with two backser on his wall, next to his elk, moose and deer heads so he can tell the story of it's downfall.
Seriously, tho. Everyone I've ever known who's had/passed a stone described it as "the worst pain I've ever felt."
Such a tiny thing can bring a grown man to his knees. In the words of my friend Ed "It's like giving birth to a cactus through your wang."

Go through all of that and not have a memento? Of the four I have had to endure, I was only able to keep one (the last). They can also be analyzed for composition and a urologist can determine potential causes and therapies to reduce the possibility of forming more.
First one I ended up in the hospital because it got stuck between the kidney and the bladder. A week of demerol and they ended up going in the hard way to snatch it. I shook it loose after participating in a motorcycle rally through the southwest...1500 miles in two days. A week after I returned home from the hospital and spent time convalescing at home, i went out for short ride and dropped my bike.
Second one I had a lithotripsy...early days of the procedure were they placed you in a steel tub and banged you with sonic pulses. Had a demerol drip during the process (I recall a rubber duckie in the tub) and spent the night in hospital.
Third one was another lithotripsy, but by this time they used a special couch with bladders to transfer the pulses into the body. Anesthesia put me out completely for the procedure, but was in and out of the hospital the same day.
Fourth one a couple years ago I passed at work after a day or two of mild pain.
They run in the family and by our experience, you passed two stones. Pain in the urethra is only felt when passing a stone.
Plus, If you piss out a Diamond you don't want to lose it. ;)
Never had one, but my aunt almost died from one about 15 years ago. It was between the size of a pea and a marble.

The 1st one I had looked like a small Spiny Sea Urchin.
This one was more shaped like a " Kidney ."
My Brother has had 2 of them in the last 7 years.
The 1st he passed.
The 2nd one the Dr. went in and got it.
I was scheduled to have my 1st one retrieved but crashed my bike 4 days prior to surgery day and then passed it on that day.
Next attack I'm going for the Dilaudid at the ER.

I peed in the cup w, the screen to be sure if I did pass a stone if it was very small I would see it on the screen...my pee was very bloody .
I really because of the general pain didn't feel it pass.
W, the screen I knew I had .

Pretty much nothing I've read in this thread sounds awesome.
At all.
My aunt has had to deal with kidney stones. I'm quite hoping they're one of those "life experiences" I can take a pass on.

zarn02,
What is your definition of ...awesome ?
Dolph :)
Well, lemme tell ya...
Anything that can be filed broadly under "terrible pain" isn't covered under that definition.
;D
Some folk claim Evian water is good for reducing kidney stones by dissolving the calcium. This claim has been around since sometime in the 1700s.

I have heard Lemon Juice and Olive Oil .

They are the the suck. I get them about once a year on average. The last bad one hit while driiving north to see my granddaughter for the first time. I drove for about 4 hours in pain before I was close enough to my destination to take a vicodin. I pretty much passed out when I got to my hotel room [laugh]
More proof there is no such thing as a kind and loving deity
Satan made them
Hey! Stop this religion talk :P
My mom had one in November that within a couple of hours, turned into an e-coli type blood infection that nearly shut her off. She went into convulsions and we ran her back to the er. Her blood pressure was 50/0, they dropped in a main line, 6 units of stuff and antbiotics and got her restarted. In two weeks you would have never known it happened but wow it was close.

And I have to blame this thread because it feels like I am now passing a stone. Again. Thanks...
I had gall stones (everyone has them, mine decide to try to escape). Worst pain I've ever had. They had to medivac me. They don't pass. Just remove the gall bladder.

Does that make you think you are having a heart attack ?

no. But, can make you completely immobile. There was no position I could lay, sit, or stand that wasn't excruciatingly painful. I was doped and drugged consistently. My stomach felt full and constipated at the same time. If the stone actually does get through, it'll likely tear the wall and lining and can cause lethal infections when the gall bladder ruptures and the acid leaks.

One day I was on the Golf Course , a guy in our 4 some started heading for the Club House.
One of the other guys said he was having a Gall Bladder attack. I was about 50 yards away from him when he took off.
I figured he'd had attacks before but I didn't know the severity off the pain compared to like a heart attack or like when I ran pretty much head on into a ditch at 70 mph and broke 7 ribs plus other assorted nasty stuff.

So has anybody had a cause for these horrible things diagnosed? I've heard drinking too much tea, or too many carbonated drinks can lead to them. Anyone with experience heard that?
I too would like to avoid them if possible. I don't think any of my relatives have hed them though.

My brother, mother, and father have all had kidney stones as well. At one time or another have had them analyzed and all had different compositions, which indicated different reasons. In my case it has something to do with my body processing calcium in an abnormal way. The best all-round preventative is to drink a lot of water.
I have had them three times since the age of 15 (yes I had a kidney stone at 15). I was working at a scout camp and not drinking enough water. Guess what; I spent a half-hour at 4 am Saturday morning curled in a ball screaming in pain, I've got them again. What made it worse was that I had done a lot of heavy lifting the two days before so my low back was a bit sore. Ureter pain refers to the low back, which lead to the worst muscle cramping I have ever experienced. I have had 'charlie-horse' cramps in my calf that have taken me to the ground . . . This was 10 TIMES as bad as the worst ever, on top off the pain I was already in.
Yeah, my wife wasn't too happy, especially since she was running back and forth between our room and the kids room, they were sick, awake, and crying too. None of us got out of bed before 10am Saturday morning.
Drink lots of water, I have heard that lemonade can also help with them but I have nothing to back that up, it may just be the increased liquid consumption. I can't stand lemonade, but if I find anything backing it up I may have to start chocking down a glass or two a day from now on. Yeah, that nastiness will still be better than EVER experiencing what happened last night.

Oh and would have been quite happy to die to relive the pain, passed a rock about 1/4 inch in dia (6mm) :'(

Damn...I don't know if I can sleep after hearing that....6mm...make the beast with two backs !

Happened to me once, about five years ago. Hasn't happened since, and the only thing I removed from my diet was soda; diet soda to be exact. But sweet Jesus was that some exquisite agony...
I had kidney stones about 10 years ago, they doped me up good and they passed. My father has also had them. We were both thold that drinking cranberry juice can help prevent them.

About 15 years ago now, (probably due for another)And the first stone.
Went down for a leak in the middle of the night and it dropped ,farout just curled up in a ball :o,
the cook called the meat truck and they took me away.
I think i passed it in the early morning, the nurses put your piss through a strainer to collect the specimen for pathology :-[
The one thing to watch for was that at least 6/12 months before when having a piss the stream was very weak and slow ,after the stone was passed all good full stream ahead ;)
I just talked to my Urologist who told me that there is credible evidence that the use of Sonic waves to breakup " stones " has substantial evidence of bringing on Diabetes later in life due to what the Sonic waves do to the Pancreas.
Word to the wise.
If there is any way to avoid that procedure I think I would.
Incidentally , I found out from my Brother who still plays a lot of Golf , that a guy he plays skins w, on the weekends had one busted up and it was the size originally of a ...no shit..a Golf Ball !!!
All I know about that guys diet from when I played a lot of Golf was he drank a LOT of beer.
After each 18 holes he probably drank a 12 pack at the Golf Course of Coors Light.
I never really saw him " drunk ' so to speak, he'd get rowdy but never falling down , slurry his wordsdrunk.

I try to Hydrate more but I know I don't Hydrate enough. My lab work always shows me in a state of Dehydration...plus I have a Water softening System that works w, Salt .
I drink about 16 ozs. of water before I go to bed ..and never get up to pee ..and sometimes sleep for 9 hours.
So I've got all 3 covered !

Rule of thumb I was taught was 1/2 your body weight in oz for a normal, non-sedintary lifestyle. More with regular exercise or any other events that cause sweating.
(ex. I weigh 200 lbs = 100oz.).
Basically enough so that your pee is as clear as possible.

we always told folks that the body at rest needs approx. 1 gallon of fluid replacement per day (ex: someone who works a desk..)
and it goes up from there.
in wildland fire, we could never carry enough water. folks were almost always dehydrated to some extent (usually a splitting headache in the morning.) had to be careful not to tip the scale over the other side with too much electrolyte replacement.
i remember a few people had issues, including kidney stones.....
Reading this thread and threads like this remind me I have been extraordinarily and undeservedly lucky so far.....
but they also make me wonder what manner of Karmic ICBM health missile is heading my way
that just hasn't arrived yet.....
I had lithotripsy last week for a 7mm stone, the stone was so big it was partially blocking the "outlet" of my kidney and was causing alot of blood and my kidney to swell. I don't remember anything about the procedure since I was put under anesthesia for it. But it wasn't the type of procedure where they put you in a tub or anything, I was on a table for it. A couple hours later the evil excrutiating pain in my back started and wouldn't stop. It felt like I had been hit right in the kidney with a baseball bat is the only way to describe it. I Got in the bathtub and stayed there for like 4 hours and the hot water helped a little but it just kept getting worse and worse. Ended up staggering into the ER and was there all night for about 8 hours getting pumped full of Dilaudid because the morphine wouldn't even touch the pain. They gave me so much I got sick from it and was throwing up most of the time. They were giving me fluids the whole time and my bladder was filling up but I wasn't able to go no matter how many times I tried. They ended up putting a catheter in to clear the blockage wich was most likely "gravel" from the broken up stone. I had that in for like two days which was hell on earth and a whole different kind of pain in itself. Iv'e had kidney stones in the past but they always seem to just pass on their own and all was good, but not this one. So to all you guys that have had this issue I can relate and I feel your pain lol.
