I am not quite sure how I feel about this yet....
Wait... what?
Also: "Justyn Amstutz (owner of 3 Desmo's)" :o. . . [roll]. . . [thumbsup]
I always said flat trackers were too slow. Throwing it sideways at 100mph on dirt, hell, I can do that on my mountain bike. ;)
guy is a principle owner of a used bike auction house. wonder if he got them cheap.
Sacrilicious.

It sucks. He recycled his wheels off the tard he did.
mitt
"We started mock up of the project by putting it on some spoked wheels with flat track race tires."
I was under the impression he was gonna use actual dirt track wheels.

i'm interested in seeing how this turns out... i've liked a lot of sand's designs and i think it will def be interesting once it's done...
and for all of you that are saying it's a travesty... i have just one quote for you that should explain it all...
Marty McFly: Wait a minute, Doc. Ah... Are you telling me that you built a time machine... out of a DeLorean?
Dr. Emmett Brown: The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?
that just about sums it up i think ;)

slightly related and just as awesome Kenny Roberts and the Indy Mile (2009) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k8hJWKIVNs#normal)

That was an awesome, awesome thing to see, especially since Amy and I got to watch it trackside, about 10 feet away from Nicky Hayden, Larry Pegram, and some of the other racing gods who were present.

Saw it too.
I can't believe they took the quintessential road bike and hacked it up. Go to hell Roland Sands.
Hence my earlier post. [cheeky]
Flat track is awesome. To be honest I think a 1198 motor would be much superior in that application - flat track is all about hooking up and the more-spaced-out power pulses of the twin will do much better than v4. I haven't raced flat track yet, but have dabbled a little. Its huge fun.

The more D16s that get heavily modded/taken from production, the more rare the remaining ones will be. In a way, this guy is helping those collectors see a return on investment with their bikes. There's something inherently wrong about taking a bike like the D16 and doing this. It's like adding a mustache to Botticelli's Venus.

If I could afford it, I'd do that too.
And hang it in my bar room next to the 'Gabrielle d'Estrées et une de ses sÅ"urs'.

I wonder what makes that guy so special? Is he some .com millionaire? He doesn't look but 35 or so in the pic.
I like how they call him their "good friend" right before they highlight that he owns 3 Desmo's....in this case, I wonder if "good friend" equates to $$$?

nothing really special about him other than him being the executive vp of sales and marketing for a national powersports auction house: http://www.npauctions.com (http://www.npauctions.com)

maybe... or it could just be that he's a local, socal guy not much younger than roland that shares his interest in motorcycles...
I am only interested because I have never seen anyone actually assrape a beautiful bike.

fwiw, the d16rr isn't an overly attractive bike. it's appealing because of what it is, not how it looks.
^^^^ +1 It's not a cute bike.
For that matter, any bike of that status doesn't need to be cute. It could look like my 88 BMW for all I care, but as long as it does everything a race bike needs to do, I wouldn't give a shit if it looked like I was riding around the track straddling a wildebeest.
You knocking wildebeest now?

actually is a co-founder of the auction house, so sounds like he had money going in

Nope, just comparing aesthetics. All the Sedicci has to do is go fast. Form needs to follow function on this one and it looks like Sands is going to give it a little bit of pizzaz to go with that bad ass motor.
I'm not a fan of the project, but not because of the doner bike.
It's a motorcycle. Buy it to take it into the woods, shoot it up, and burn it. None of my business how you use your own bike.
D16s aren't irreplaceable works of human achievement. It was a production bike. I'm sure there's at least one in a collection behind glass or ropes somewhere anyway.
It's not just that it's a D16 for me, it's that .. well.. put it nicely.. none of the bikes he's made are my taste at all...

You say that like it's a bad thing:

(The letters spell out a bad French pun for "She's got a hot ass")
Some sacred cows need to be slaughtered. I think this bike is in that spirit.
Except that ain't Venus. ;)
I was thinking of Duchamp when I posted that. It had already been done - no point in doing it yet again.

I'm a big fan of the D16RR, but not because of the looks. I've always thought it looked terribly plain and sterile, drab.
