Title: What or Who Have You Seen ?
Post by: DoubleEagle on April 14, 2011, 09:41:10 PM
What sort of unique event or person have you seen in your life that is famous that probably most people your age have not seen ?

When I was 8 years old , I saw arguably the best Baseball Pitcher ever .

He pitched for the Negro leagues, Satchel Paige.

Many Baseball Historians will argue he was the all time best ever.

I saw Mark Fidrych pitch at either his last ever start or close to it.

Was a pretty crazy experience at Tiger Stadium back in the mid-70s.

Paige also pitched for the:

Dominican League
Mexican League
Cuban (Winter) League
Puerto Rican (Winter) League

Major League Baseball as well...
Cleveland Indians (1948â€"1949)
St. Louis Browns (1951â€"1953)
Kansas City Athletics (1965)

"In 1965, Kansas City Athletics owner Charles O. Finley signed Paige, 59 at the time, for one game. On September 25, against the Boston Red Sox,[119] Finley invited several Negro League veterans including Cool Papa Bell to be introduced before the game. Paige was in the bullpen, sitting on a rocking chair, being served coffee by a “nurse” between innings. He started the game by getting Jim Gosger out on a pop foul. The next man, Dalton Jones, reached first and went to second on an infield error, but was thrown out trying to reach third on a pitch in the dirt. Carl Yastrzemski doubled and Tony Conigliaro hit a fly ball to end the inning. The next six batters went down in order, including a strikeout of Bill Monbouquette. In the fourth inning, Paige took the mound, to be removed according to plan by Haywood Sullivan. He walked off to a boisterous ovation despite the small crowd of 9,000. The lights dimmed and, led by the PA announcer, the fans lit matches and cigarette lighters while singing “The Old Gray Mare”.

I got to sit and chat with Ernest Borgnine a few years back at the Italian Festival in Hollywood.  [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

Ive had lunch with George Barris (the batmobile builder among many other things).

I've seen 42 of our 50 states so far.

I attended the reopening of the Statue of Liberty.

I've driven Nascars on three different tracks. Soon to be four.  [evil]

Moto related, I passed Arnold (and his posse) on the snake headed north from the Rockstore.

I met Reeves Callaway and Larry Shinoda.
I think it was just a year or so later Larry died.  :-\
I asked Reeves to autograph a hat but he had a rushed, pained look on his face and said he'd be right back and ran to the bathroom. He did come back and sign a Callaway Corvette hat.

Mario Andretti has a house near me.
I've met and spoke with him when he came into the antiques place down the road that my wife and I worked at.
Someone else there asked him, "Mario, how can you get into a regular car after a race and drive like a normal person?"
He responded, "You don't understand, after the race we fly the helicopter home!"  ;D

I was at a kart track in Vegas years ago and got absolutely smoked by a couple dudes.

Turns out it was Al Unser Jr. and Steve Harwell (singer of Smashmouth).

Little Al signed a TRD hat that I had with me.  [thumbsup]

I shared an elavator ride with Billy Connolly.  Just him and me.  He pretended not to recognise me.

Worked for a number of bands in the 80s.....  of the many.... Tina Turner was the nicest human being of 'em all.

Once delivered a Jaguar XJ12 to Roger Moore.

I was the first person to see the face of my youngest son on the day of his birth.

I got to see SRV in concert a year or so before his death.  Not that big a deal - just required a ticket purchase.  I still feel fortunate to have seen such a great show.

Met and chatted with Tommy Emmanuel - also not that big a deal because he is very approachable and I think anyone could chat with him if they really wanted to.  He is (in my opinion) one of the worlds greatest living guitar players and a hell of a nice guy.  [bow_down]

Jason Priestly @the '98 Montreal GP when he was racing Mustangs.  I was touring the pits talking to the drivers/crews in some of the lesser series.  Took me a minute to realize who I was talking to.  Just another regular guy talking cars.

I got to meet with celebrity chef Graham Kerr. That was cool.

Saw Darth Vader in mall in Colorado Springs back in the early 80's.

Picked up Randy Macho Man Savage and the Undertaker from the airport when I was 19 working as a Bell Boy.  Oh YEAH!

Got to see Mountain Bike greats John Tomac and Greg Harbold race.

Saw just how fast Doug Coombs could ski. There was no way that I could keep up. He made me look like it was my first time on the bunny hill.

haha and saw Eddie Vedder making an ass of himself in a Seattle resturant being a 'big shot.'

I was skijoring with a pair of my huskies (X-country skiing with a pulling dog (s))in Anchorage and saw the Governor, Tony Knowles.  He was skiing with his old dog.  His old dog could barely run, and when it saw my fast dogs pulling me and running rowards it, it just froze in the middle of the trail.  My dogs and I tried to miss the Governors dog but we saw her too late.  My dogs ran over her and I crashed, hitting her in the side.  When I landed I thought, "oh shit, I've killed the governor's dog."   Before I could get up Tony came over to help me up and apologized.  To be honest the crash was my fault. Turned out his dog was okay.  At the end of the ski he came into the parking lot while I was loading my dogs and taking off their harnesses.  He came over to again apologize.  I asked him if he would be running for US Senate and he said yes.  I wished him luck.  Voted for him too.

Got to see Kurt Cobain, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Duane Almond in concert just days before each of them died.  I know it is a weird thing.  Thankfully I saw Kenny Wayne Sheppard 4 years ago and he is still alive and playing better guitar all the time, so it seems the curse is over.

Met Juan Manuel Fangio, translated an interview with him, and was driven around the old Ontario Motor Speedway by the Maestro himself.  1976.  It was a promo thing for Mercedes and the Long Beach Grand Prix.  For an Argentine kid (well, I was 19), it doesnt get much better than that.

Had a pleasant chat with Carol King on a flight from San Francisco to LA.  Talked Jay Leno into buying a particular book at a local auto bookstore.  Sold car models to Jerry Seinfeld, John Frankenheimer, Dan Gurney, and JM Fangio II.  Had lunch with Brian Redman.

One of my finer moments.   ;D   There may have been alcohol involved.

In this town (particularly in Montecito) you can run into these types of people all over the place. And everybody in my industry has a good story that starts, "when we worked on X's house that friggin' tawt waffle insisted that we [insert something insane] for free." Nobody pays them much attention (which is why they live here I suspect). They are near universally douche bags, particularly to wait staff and domestic workers. Except the sister of the Shah of Iran. Really nice lady. My only regret is that I couldn't come up with a good Mork and Mindy reference when I saw Johnathan winters in the grocery store. Nanu Nanu just wasn't going to cut it.

I think there is a jazz fest in Sandpoint, but i'm talking the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow,
end of every February. I have to say it's declined in style and coolness since Lionel passed away and
Doc Skinner retired. Then John Clayton took the reins. meh now.
I remember getting drunk before a performance with Benny Greene. It was funnier than hell to watch
that guy play the piano drunk. Talk about smooth.

Speaking of Jonathon Winters. I used to work for a company that dealt in Americana antiques and we'd do shows
all over Southern Cali. Anyway Jonathan Winters comes into the show and wanted to trade paintings he did for antiques.
I told him I couldn't do that but the boss would be back in 15 and we'll talk to him. Anyway the boss went for it thinking the paintings would be worth something some day. Think of a horse reclining on a divan but with huge tits and a vajayjay. :o

I went to Cooperstown in 2009 to see Rickey Henderson inducted.
While there, I literally bumped into Yogi Berra, he was having lunch at the same place I was. There were baseball greats EVERYWHERE. Willy Mays, Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, even Pete Rose was in town signing autographs even though he couldnt attend the ceremony.

As far as random places/things most people haven't seen in person, my 2 favorites are Niagara Falls & Prairie Dog Town in Oakley, KS., home of the world's largest prairie dog :D

Jimmy invited me and my bass player to come jam with him and Carter Beauford (drummer from DMB) at his studio once. Couldn't get away from work, goddammit.  :'( :'( :'(

Chatted with Charlie Hunter at the bar after one of his shows here a few years ago. Really nice guy. He (and the drummer) signed my CD.

Went on a moto ride with Alonzo Bodden (comedian) a couple years ago, and we've emailed about my Multi re-build a few times (he was doing something similar to his). Another really nice guy.

Saw Howie Long at the Vegas airport a few years ago. Very large guy.

Nikki Sixx was sitting in 1st class on my flight from Seattle to SF last weekend. He appears to be stuck in the 80s.  [laugh] Living the rockstar life though, so  [beer]

One of my female co-workers is friends (and in a knitting club...crazy rockstar wives!) with Matt Cameron's wife. Still trying to get some Pearl Jam tickets from that connection.  ;D

I built a really cool Monster back in '03-'04.  Won some stuff for that effort.

Have met and partied with MANY, MANY of the DMF'ers...

Got an exceedingly welcoming smile from Gina Davis.

Turned down doing free work on Queen Latifah's Hummer H2.

I've saved someone's life.

Met Jay Leno 3 times, he remembered who I was the 2nd and 3rd times.  [thumbsup]

Had a car on 4 wheels, 3 wheels, 2 wheels, 1 wheel and NO wheels.

Had a bike on 2 wheels, front wheel, rear wheel, NO wheels.

Done a 100+mph wheelie unintentionally...  :o

Got a compliment from my favorite artist about one of my motorcycles.  (My Dad, before he passed)

Partied with a friend who had partied with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin personally.

Saw the ill-fated G N R / Metallica double bill tour.

I've drag raced at the now defunct Detroit Dragway.

Seen the Tragically Hip 5 times and counting.....

Get to hear 'I Love You's from my daughter now on a regular basis!  [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

I obviously need an interesting life. [bang] My claim to fame in regards to this board is chatting up Fast Freddie Spencer at an AMA SBK race in of all places the Texas World Speedway in College Station, TX maybe 20 years ago in 1991 when he raced RC30s for Two Bros. Racing. That was the one and only time that tour went to TWS. Had fun talking with Fast Freddie about watching him when he was a kid road racing production RD Yammyhammers at Dallas Int'l. Motor Speedway in Lewisville, TX. The track is long since gone but the memory of his Dad holding him up on the grid because he was too short to do it himself will live on forever. Even got a letter to Motorcyclist magazine printed last year re-telling that same story about Fast Freddie. Good times for sure and it seemed Freddie really liked talking about those old childhood racing memories. We held up the line of autograph seakers for quite a while talking about the DIMS races when he was a kid. [thumbsup] [moto] Got my signed TBR/Freddie Spencer poster framed and hanging over my roll away toolbox in my garage as I type this! ;D

As a spectator, watching Nick Lidstrom play for two decades has been wonderful. Meeting Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay was pretty wonderful. Terrible Ted is one of my personal heroes. Most of the "celebs" I've interacted with have been academics (Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, James Loewen, etc)

I've met a bunch of hockey players and underground musicians (punk/hardcore/metal), but no current "superstars." I used to be pretty active in b-horror movie culture and met a lot of horror and grindhouse actors/directors. Alex Vincent (the little kid from the first Child's Play movie) wanted to beat me up in a karaoke bar once. That was good times. Gunnar Hansen (the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Leatherface) was one of the nicest people I've ever been around. I was able to get Jeremy Bulloch to autograph my Boba Fett helmet.  [thumbsup]

I shared a cab with Carly Simon a few years back, riding in the rain from times sq to ues.

I saw Monica Lewinsky in Bed Bath and Beyond right after the bj controversy.  I wanted to ask her if she was looking for stain remover.

About 10 years ago, I was sitting on w 40th or so at a bistro and Al Franken walks by -- I yelled "Hey Al, is it still the Al Franken Year?"

Saw Andie McDowell at the airport as my now wife and I were on our way to elope in Antigua.......she gave me a smoldering stare......could have been disgust, I'm not sure.

Clint Eastwood held the door for my wife at The Hogs Breath Inn in Carmel, CA.  He gave my wife a serious up/down!  Her feet didn't touch the ground for the rest of the evening.

Grew up working in the home of Walter Ridder from Knight/Ridder newspapers......they had a great Christmas party every year.  Also worked in the houses of local newsmen Marvin and Bernard Kalb and Daniel Schorr.

I considered the late General William Odom, former head of some large government agencies a good friend and client, in that order.

I saw the southern lights and a lunar eclipse on the same night in the middle of winter in Antarctica.  Never met anyone famous though.
How cold was it then ?

It was probably only -20F or -30F which was about average for the winter in McMurdo station.  August was the coldest month which averaged about -40F.  That's when the big hurricane blizzards blew up and wind chill could get down to -100F and send anything not tied down to Oz.

Pete Townsend once wrote me a fan letter.

Met Frank Zappa (I was a huge fan and he was, unfortunately, a dick)

I personally delivered some floppy disks to Niel Young.

I once talked to John Paul Jones (tech support call)

Met Thomas Dolby at some dot-com party a decade ago he called me "one of the gods of music software"

Back in my youth I wrote electronic music software until I realized I was combining a programmer's salary (  ;D ) with a musician's salary ( :'( )

The only person of note I've met since then was Bill Gates (at a 'new hires' meet and greet at Microsoft) and frankly he was a lot less cool than the folks I met in the music industry.

Her father is a Doctor who does radiology and is a photogragher on the side. The company that I work for does radiation shielding and we use his artwork for inside one if our HDR enclosures, and had been since before the whole bj thing happened. One day a bunch of us were on a conference call with him, after the bj thing, and one of my coworkers asked completely not thinking just trying to make some small talk asks  "so how are things with the family?"

I was driving down the main street of Carson City, NV and saw a pickup truck with a personalized license plate "Bell X1".  Looked up at the driver and sure enough it was Chuck Yeager.  I've seen him fly his P-51 at an airshow and also heard him speak at Oshkosh but it was still kind of fun to see him motoring down the road in a pickup truck.

This one is third hand, and way third hand at that.  An old bass playing friend had a band many years ago.  They managed to somehow  get enough money together to fly themselves and their equipment to Hawaii, I think for a rock festival.   They were jamming in a local club one night and Jimi Hendrix came in and politely asked if he could play with them for awhile.

I've heard this story 500 times over the years, how my buddy once played with Hendrix.

That would have been the tits !

My Cousin had a band when he was at WVU and Spirt played a Concert there .

My cousin's band played warm up to Spirit , plus my cousin got to jam with Spirt earlier in the day.

Not quite up to Hendrix stature , but at the time Spirit was a popular Band in the early '70s w. songs like " 1984 " and " I Got a Line on You "

Really cool Jimi story. How damn cool is that?? [clap] [bow_down]

Loved Randy California and Spirit! If I remember right his step dad Ed Cassidy played drums. Caught them in Austin at the old Armadillo World Headquarters when they were touring for the Spirit of '76 album. [thumbsup]

Sat and had a smoke with Bob Uecker after I put wood floors down at his house. Even had a chance to yell at him. Also, my girlfriend sat next to the great Micheal Jordan at a casino in Chicago. She even won $300 that night.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill  [roll]

Tony Hawk when we built his ramp for the tour a few years back. He was almost terrified of the solid 3 feet of vert

Lady Gaga when she drunkenly changed the design of her entire stage at 3 AM

I stood close to Michael Jackson right before he died

I've met the remaining members of the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers. Greg Allman's daughter made a serious disturbance in my pants

My personal favorite was Keith Richards. I did a large mural painting of him for the president of the company and he brought Keith in for me to meet him. I instantly wanted to do drugs

Keith probably had a " joint " somewhere hidden in his hair.

That would have taken the " cake " to have met him !

Obliterated. I got completely and utterly obliterated. I told him that there are three things the Amish know how to do well.

1. Grow stuff

2. Drugs

3. Stay out of trouble

He was quite understanding and an overall fun character to hang out with
