Title: 2012 Superbike testing at Mugello

That engine sounds cool... I'm not sold on the tail section.

Very RSV-like in its dimensions. Surprised at the SSS; everything I had read said they were going to a DSS.

Yes, and that is a good thing. Endurance racers love the ducs for the ease of changing the tyres. Besides, it's just plain cooler looking. If they're ditching the Dru Clutch and the trellis, you have to at least keep the SSS.   Th purists would set fire to bologna otherwise.

I like it. The engineering behind it sounds awesome. The geometry changing possibilities with that swinger are amazing, it would be so easy to tailor the bike to each track. I wonder if they're gonna try for mass centralization with the exhaust, that would be tits.

I cant wait for november.

There's one in every crowd.   ;D  (One who cares about his butt more than performance, that is.)

It's a Ducati superbike. Pain is part of the deal.
Sweet, sweet pain  [evil]

I'm not saying I wouldn't ride the piss out of it.

It just looks somewhat awkward. Then again the only superbike I've ever ridden was a 749 and that was only for a few short miles.

And if I cared about my butt that much, I would shave it.....but let's not get off track

Check out the patent application they filed for a non-trellis framed, DSS bike...

http://www.google.com/patents?id=19_KAAAAEBAJ&printsec=abstract&source=gbs_overview_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false (http://www.google.com/patents?id=19_KAAAAEBAJ&printsec=abstract&source=gbs_overview_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false)

That is a LONG swingarm.

If this bike is much better than Checa's ride, Ducati will be lapping the field next year.

Looks pretty cool from what can be seen. Hopefully it has it's own identity though...as the tail looks a lot like the RSV4 tail...just like the current SBK's tail looked a lot like the MV F4 tail.

The seating position looks a bit awkward, but that may just be the looks.

I'll reserve judgement until we see a finished product, but that seating arrangement looks miserable.  You can say what you want about a Ducati and comfort, but it does look odd.

Just got word from the president of my local club.

"Just heard from another club president over in Italy for the annual president's meeting who's seen the actual bike and he said that's pretty much what it looks like.  They apparently were told the 20hp increase is accurate, but he said they're saying a 10kg weight reduction, not 20kg as was reported in the articles.  He said it looks sweet, especially in red."

That looks pretty hot. The one thing I don't like is the tank to fairing design

Title: Re: 2012 Superbike testing at Mugello
Post by: Raux on June 18, 2011, 01:09:59 PM
actually that's one thing that links it to some Ducati heritage. the MH900e had that as well.
but that does look like it's gonna be either tank skins or plastic tanks
the thing i don't get is the width of the bike. the front is going to have to be very large mouthed to be able to have the front wheel that far into the fairing

Do these bikes still have tanks up on top....thought those were all cosmetic places to rest one's beer belly during a long ride...  [beer]

what i'm wondering is if the brand new model tanks... ones that had to have been designed with the expanding tank issue in mind... will they still be the same plastic?

I know, so does the Desmo,  which is probably what it's based on. I still don't like it :P

Good point on the width, I hope it's not. The slimness of ducs has always been one of the things that makes it handle so well

I'd venture to say the single cylinder width as opposed to a sideways 4 cylinder is the reason for Ducati's being so slim, not necessarily the design, Jesus.  The bike doesn't need to be fat since the engine isn't as wide.   ???

True dat, but you have to take into consideration the oversquare nature of the new engine deign. The bore is so large that the engine will have to be considerably wider than the Evoluzione.

Eleventy-billion mm

One rumor has the bore at 111mm vs 104mm for the 1198.  Not a huge difference for external dimensions.  The fact the current sbk tucks the battery, ECU, and evap cans alongside the engine under the fairings means there is plenty of room to work with.

7mm -- that's like eight or nine inches American, right?   ;D

That's an even 12 inches American, my friend.  [laugh]

111mm is a big slug, for sure, but seeing as it's a (supposedly) brand-new motor, I'd expect it to be a good bit narrower.
There have been incremental changes since the Pantah, but not much different in light of the time passed...

my local club president saw the actual bike at the Presidents meeting in Italy a few weeks ago...and he said that the rendering above is too rounded and not representative of the finished product...Del Torchio was hesistant to show it at 1st, and did not show the production line of them being assembled...but he was rather impressed of what they did see...

haha, and the other thing is that the only spy shots to come out are ones of it braking... too fast to have a good shot taken of it while on the gas?   [laugh]

According to the article, the name will remain the 1199.  Ducati just called it the Xtreme in house.
