Title: So Ashamed Post by: MostroS2R on July 26, 2011, 06:49:36 AM I got beat by my brother-in-law who rides an 07 hd night train.
It was roll on, from about 80 to 180km, I kept pace and started gaining at about 160 when I let up. Yes, in the twisties I leave him way behind, that's where all the fun is anyhow. Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: muskrat on July 26, 2011, 07:14:39 AM [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]
I have both Ducati & HD. Now I'm certain my Electra Glide wont do the same but it's still funny to hear this. Surely this thread will get locked fast since there are so many haters. :P Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: MostroS2R on July 26, 2011, 07:32:06 AM Well, he does have some mods and I'm stock. He's a hd mechanic and has it tuned perfectly, race tuner, air and pipes.
I have a stock S2r 800 minus pipes, probably hurting it a little. Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: bikepilot on July 26, 2011, 07:39:17 AM Roll ons test gearing more than anything else really. Downshift next time [evil]
Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: MostroS2R on July 26, 2011, 07:42:10 AM I did, was spinning about 5000 rpm. We cracked them open and he gained about 2 to 3 bike lengths on me before I started realing him in.
I wonder if I was geared down a tooth if it would make a difference. Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: stopintime on July 26, 2011, 07:46:17 AM Well, he does have some mods and I'm stock. ............................ Let's leave it at that [cheeky] Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: strat10 on July 26, 2011, 07:53:42 AM Yeah, you should be ashamed ;)
Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: MostroS2R on July 26, 2011, 07:56:40 AM Yeah, you should be ashamed ;) Time for an upgrade, EVO. ;) Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: Raux on July 26, 2011, 09:49:12 AM Let's leave it at that [cheeky] wonder if your bike would have been in the same situation ;) Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: stopintime on July 26, 2011, 09:56:27 AM wonder if your bike would have been in the same situation ;) Never [evil] 1. I'd start at 6,500/7,000 revs if I still didn't win.... 2. I'd blame the crazy dog by the roadside .... 'wow, I almost hit that damn dog' if my competitor didn't believe me 3. I'd lie about it on the forum [coffee] Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: ItsaDuc on July 26, 2011, 10:03:43 AM Could have been worse. What if it was a Prius. :-\
Either way, this is your best advise. 3. I'd lie about it on the forum [coffee] Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: MostroS2R on July 26, 2011, 10:43:46 AM Yeah, once I hit 6500 rpm I started to pull on him.
I would have had him if that damn dog didn't start running for the road. Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: stopintime on July 26, 2011, 10:56:09 AM Yeah, once I hit 6500 rpm I started to pull on him. Oh - a dog - you should have mentioned that [thumbsup] Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: zarn02 on July 26, 2011, 12:13:03 PM C'mon guys, a lot of us watch racing. Just remember some excuses, and modify them to fit your situation.
"I'd have taken you, but the suspension wasn't quite right. This naturally took me off-course into that large swarm of flies that were hovering above the road kill, which I then ran over, causing me to almost crash. By the time conditions on the road had improved you'd pulled quite a lead on me. Good job on taking advantage of this, and securing a victory despite not being at my level." One other explanation, you weren't on your way to a Starbucks. Ducatis are programmed for optimal performance when pointed toward a coffee shop. Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: He Man on July 26, 2011, 05:07:28 PM i was thinking about some NOS.

Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: OT on July 26, 2011, 07:37:00 PM Yeah, once I hit 6500 rpm I started to pull on him. How long does it take to get from 5,000 to 6,500 RPM....about 0.5 seconds? Rematch! You should have blown him away right from the start [evil]Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: kopfjäger on July 26, 2011, 11:11:19 PM An 800 is no match for Big Twin power.
Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: MostroS2R on July 27, 2011, 05:21:52 AM An 800 is no match for Big Twin power. I think if he was stock I would have taken him. Those bikes have tons of low end torque. Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: muskrat on July 27, 2011, 09:52:55 AM nope, that was the V rod engine. He lost to a regular old 96 incher with "mods"

I'll also make sure there are no dogs around. ;) Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: ManaloEA on July 27, 2011, 12:12:36 PM I got surprised by a heavily modded HD a couple of weeks ago. I was talking to the guy at a light, and then the light turned green. He got on it right away... I hesitated, then rolled the throttle. But instead of reeling him it, I was still surprised at how quick that thing was, that I missed the shift to second. Next time, gotta remember... Type A, alpha male, can't let this guy win.
Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: DucHead on July 27, 2011, 12:18:29 PM So, if I understand correctly (doubtful) a 1570cc bike outran an 800cc bike in a roll-on from ~50mph to ~100?
Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: MostroS2R on July 27, 2011, 04:57:56 PM So, if I understand correctly (doubtful) a 1570cc bike outran an 800cc bike in a roll-on from ~50mph to ~100? Well yeah, he got a good jump on me, I started to gain on him but it wasn't as quick as I thought it would be. I'm sure if I continued I would have passed him. Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: Kev M on July 28, 2011, 05:07:43 AM FWIW a lot of Harleys are geared pretty low and they will tend to get a jump on a lot of sport bikes right off the line - but stick with em and you'll usually reel them in.
Sportsters are heavy at about 500-600 lbs, but you'll come across a HEAVILY modified one from time-to-time (which may look just like the rest of them), but with 1250cc jugs, cams, additional headwork etc can actually be pushing more than 100 hp to the rear wheel. But they are the exceptions, not the norm. Title: Re: So Ashamed Post by: bikepilot on July 28, 2011, 05:19:37 AM 5k rpm isn't enough, downshift twice. No need for a low-geared HD (and they aren't geared that low, they just make their power at lower rpms) to get the jump on a high-revving sport bike (which a 2v duc really isn't) - the sport bike rider just has to know what to do with the clutch and shifter. Keep the motor near its power peak and I suspect you'll be able to outrun the HD, though to be honest both the HD and the 2 valve monster are pretty slow as far as bikes go. A stock 600cc sport bike would leave you both for dead. NOS might be fun [evil]

Yes, they do make power down low (a reading from the book of Duh), but many of them are ALSO geared low, specifically domestic production 883s and XR1200/XR1200X models. It's not uncommon for them to launch better and stay ahead for about 1/8 of a mile. But most sportbikes will outrun them by the 1/4. |
