epicenter was in VA
I'm seeing it was a 5.8. I felt it up here by philly and have seen reports of shaking all the way up to NYC. i only know ppl as far south as NC and they felt it too.
everyone down that way alright?

Was about to post.. I didn't feel it, eating lunch in work truck, but mom called and said the house was shaking.. she lives in williamsburg bk..

wife said she didn't feel it thgh, about 4 miles away in a stronger structure thgh..

Definetely felt it for about a minute here in Columbus OH.

Here in Arlington.. felt like the floor was dancing and I wasn't

My cousin in DC felt it, but as of 230pm all the Virginia phone lines are tied up and its hard to get in contact with people down there.
At least the Evening news has something to report tonight.

It was not real biggy here (suburban DC). Few things shook, a round toy rolled off a cabinet. Made for an entertaining break in the day, but that's about it in the DC metro.

i made sure my liquor was safe.
was very odd not understanding why the whole house was shaking for a littel bit.

				Felt it in Baltimore.
1st time I ever felt a quake.  No damage just felt like the floor was bouncing a bit.

My cousin just said that she felt it working in the Google bldg in Ann Arbor, MI.

epicenter was 45 minutes outside of my home in Richmond.  It was pretty wild for 20 seconds.  Makes me want to finish up my oh shit bag!

A framed photo of my mother in law fell off a shelf and broke.......so the Panda was correct.  Nothing bad happened!   8)
Hey Brix, whatcha got in your OS Bag?  Im thinking about some type of two way radio for mine. For over an hour, my cell phone couldnt get a call through.   [bang]

There's a great app for your Iphone called "Mapity Quakes". You'll be amazed a just how many little earthquakes there are all the time.
another iPhone moment.

Just talked to my sister, in her downtown DC office there was no damage, just lots of movement (only a few things fell), which caused panic, screaming, and a disorganized evacuation.  Their "emergency meet zone" outside was unusable because it was an unstable overhang. She's now walking across the city to get home as traffic is snarled.  Glad it wasn't any worse, neither she nor her office were prepared.
:-\
Speaking of phones, fwiw, my sis couldn't get phone calls through until now, but texts worked immediately after.

Felt it here in Germantown. Thank goodness the 800 was still standing when I made it outside the building!!! whew.....

Felt the tremors up here on Long Island

We felt a decent little rumble down here in Chapel Hill.
One of my friends in DC's building was evacuated, so she got the afternoon off from work.
I don't know of anybody that's seen any damage.  Saw some reported on tv in Baltimore.  But that's Baltimore.  How do they know the damage came from the quake, isn't shit just falling apart there?

Funny, I was in Santiago the other day and there was a 6.2 quake. The buildings are designed to flex and I was on the first floor of the building. I barely felt it. I guess since the construction on the east coast does not take into account earthquakes, the buildings are too rigid.

I happened to open Facebook right around the time of the quake, and watched as most of my friends back in DC posted something about it. Then a few moments later from Baltimore, then Philly, then New Jersey and finally Albany, NY.
It was a bit like watching this XKCD cartoon in real time:

was difficult to get texts out for a bit, but luckily i didn't have to make any phone calls.

Whether or not you felt it has more to do with the geology of the area, and the characteristics of the earthquake (i.e., depth and duration of shaking), than how the buildings are designed.

felt it here in CT... pretty scary it was loooooooong
my dad's farm is about 38 miles from the epicenter
[roll] he didn't feel it, he was outside taking care of the horses

F-ing rookies! California native here. Generally there is a 7.0 by 8am so i don't even have to shake my orange juice for breakfast.
Glad everyone is ok. pussies  ;D

I was working from home and did not feel squat in columbus OH.
Called relatives in VA (Alexandria) and was told that they had some pictures etc fall off.

Last time there was a 5.8 I was laying on the couch watching TV and it rocked me to sleep like a baby.
You guys on the east coast...Instead of worrying about the quake, you should be worrying about the hurricane headed your way instead.

I was at lunch and saw it on CNN...  I thought, "Why is everyone so worked up about a 5.8?"
Then I realized it was on the east coast...  So, I can see the hysteria.
But WTF is up with everyone running outside?!
"Oh no! It's an earthquake! Let's run outside where buildings and shit can fall on us!"  [roll]
Stop, drop, and cover.   But then again, I guess you guys back east don't have too many earthquake awareness drills, do ya?   :-\
Anyway, glad everyone is unhurt.  [thumbsup]

nope. nobody here knpows how to handle an earthquake. we thought there was something wrong with the building itself.
most have never actually been in one.
it would be like dumping 3 ft of snow on SoCal. people would lose their minds
then again that woudl happen here too so not a great example....

yeah, people in SoCal don't know what to do with a few rain drops...
they either slow down to like 40 on the freeway (limit is 65... realistically 80 ) or drive even faster...  [roll]
 [bacon]

Or call work and say they can't make it in because they can't drive in such "dangerous" rain.
despite the fact that we have a rainy *season*Quote from: The Bacon Junkie on August 23, 2011, 11:27:57 PM
...

This.
And WTF with the screaming.
My sister's office was pandemonium.  Elbows were flying on the way out the door.
 [thumbsdown]
I coached her in how to react to her next earthquake, hopefully she'll pass it on.

				Oh the Humanity!!!

Isnt the sky falling or something like that??  Oh thats right, its this weekend.....
How laughable was the "news" immediately after [[[THE QUAKE]]].  The interrupted reports, "this just in", and the ad libbing gave some comic relief.  Field reporters were scrambling to find "damage".
It sucks about the Washington Monument, National Cathedral and other real damage.  Hate that it was diluted by early accounts of minor damage portayed to be major.

Worse place to be in nyc during a quake is the streets.. imagine how much glass would be coming down at high speeds?
