Felt the tremors up here on Long Island

Rameses

We felt a decent little rumble down here in Chapel Hill.

One of my friends in DC's building was evacuated, so she got the afternoon off from work.

I don't know of anybody that's seen any damage.  Saw some reported on tv in Baltimore.  But that's Baltimore.  How do they know the damage came from the quake, isn't shit just falling apart there?

Funny, I was in Santiago the other day and there was a 6.2 quake. The buildings are designed to flex and I was on the first floor of the building. I barely felt it. I guess since the construction on the east coast does not take into account earthquakes, the buildings are too rigid.

my keyboard just served me with paternity suit.

I happened to open Facebook right around the time of the quake, and watched as most of my friends back in DC posted something about it. Then a few moments later from Baltimore, then Philly, then New Jersey and finally Albany, NY.

It was a bit like watching this XKCD cartoon in real time:

Whether or not you felt it has more to do with the geology of the area, and the characteristics of the earthquake (i.e., depth and duration of shaking), than how the buildings are designed.

felt it here in CT... pretty scary it was loooooooong

my dad's farm is about 38 miles from the epicenter

Last time there was a 5.8 I was laying on the couch watching TV and it rocked me to sleep like a baby.

You guys on the east coast...Instead of worrying about the quake, you should be worrying about the hurricane headed your way instead.

The Bacon Junkie

I was at lunch and saw it on CNN...  I thought, "Why is everyone so worked up about a 5.8?"

Then I realized it was on the east coast...  So, I can see the hysteria.

But WTF is up with everyone running outside?!

"Oh no! It's an earthquake! Let's run outside where buildings and shit can fall on us!"  [roll]

Stop, drop, and cover.   But then again, I guess you guys back east don't have too many earthquake awareness drills, do ya?   :-\

Anyway, glad everyone is unhurt.  [thumbsup]

I find it disturbing that you're imagining me in a sauna, never mind the teletubbie aspect of it

nope. nobody here knpows how to handle an earthquake. we thought there was something wrong with the building itself.
most have never actually been in one.

it would be like dumping 3 ft of snow on SoCal. people would lose their minds
then again that woudl happen here too so not a great example....
