Title: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: ab on October 16, 2011, 08:32:59 PM A good weekend just got ruined. A great weekend riding West Virginia twisty roads Saturday and Sunday. I mean my first time there and it is one of the most great twisty rides right from the get go. Went Cass train station etc. Route 60 was by far the greatest one I have been on. Can't remember the other 500 miles full of twisty we put on.
Return Sunday evening and I am 20 miles away apt in columbus . MY BELOVED DM620 That i love so much simply because it was my first real bike and I have now almost 52,000 miles on her (all me) :'( :'( :'( Fell from the trailer. Not only that. Jumped off from the trailer to the street. F'n Columbus shitty bumpy ass roads. Albiet the driver was not as slow as I would have liked but Shit happens sometimes to good people. I even asked after we dropped off the other bike from the same trailer that "we should move due to weight distribution the bike to middle". My friends laughed at me for being too paranoid. The cables must have got lose after we unstrapped and dropped of one of the riders. I Checked the straps and it was fine but apparently didn't hold. Shitty trailer needs suspension. I will take full stock of her later this week but initial inspection shows the following. I need to start looking for used parts. :'( Ducati performance Remus left side pipe cover is shot... (wonder if i can buy the cover alone) 1 CRG lever (brake) shorty broke off Handle bar Light ( Just had HID light custom done... The bucket and bezel done) Rear set (needs welding) Speedy gauge looks out of place a bit front fender scuffed only ( i think) fork seems ok.. bit of scuff (i think ) Dont think there is major structural damage. Frame slider did good job considering. You can't understand how it feels to see that. I love that bike and want to put more f'n miles on her. My friends were shocked that I was not so angry. I am sad inside. I don't think it has hit me yet. I will post pics tomorrow. (pic before the accident. no incident the four hour ride back from West Virginia) (After the jumping off trailer ) The pipes - that will kill me (wonder if I can buy the carbon cover if insides is not damaged. The carbon is cracked and broken) [url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252400231/](http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6222/6252400231_3f19216779_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252926960/) 2011-10-16 - 23-06-10 - Ducati Monster Trailer Accident - 11 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252400231/#) by ab_duc620M2004 (http://www.flickr.com/people/35374145@N02/), on Flickr (http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6114/6252926960_291fa866be_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252926960/) 2011-10-16 - 18-51-50 - Ducati Monster Trailer Accident - 4 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252926960/#) by ab_duc620M2004 (http://www.flickr.com/people/35374145@N02/), on Flickr (http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6167/6252913198_c2afc95ec5_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252913198/) 2011-10-16 - 23-03-47 - Ducati Monster Trailer Accident - 5 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252913198/#) by ab_duc620M2004 (http://www.flickr.com/people/35374145@N02/), on Flickr (http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6235/6252394245_dca609dc8b_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252394245/) 2011-10-16 - 23-07-35 - Ducati Monster Trailer Accident - 16 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252394245/#) by ab_duc620M2004 (http://www.flickr.com/people/35374145@N02/), on Flickr (http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6160/6252928050_acf4ff05fb_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252928050/) 2011-10-16 - 23-06-26 - Ducati Monster Trailer Accident - 13 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6252928050/#) by ab_duc620M2004 (http://www.flickr.com/people/35374145@N02/), on Flickr Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: kopfjäger on October 16, 2011, 09:38:19 PM Punch your friends in the lips

Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: fastwin on October 17, 2011, 07:52:08 AM Punch your friends in the lips What he said! >:( The trailer has no suspension? Weird. If it was big enough to haul several scooters I would assume it would have some sort of leaf spring suspension. Even my 6x10' utility trailer that I use for scooter hauling has leaf springs. Doesn't matter. Damage to your loved one is all that counts. Sorry for the accident and grief. But thankfully all can be repaired. [thumbsup] Glad you had a great time in the WV twisties! [Dolph] Sounds like a great weekend up to the time when the bike was launched. :P Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: speedknot on October 17, 2011, 04:56:59 PM Sorry to hear that about your baby. Trailering is tough if you dont have the proper equip. I almost lost my Duc when I first went to pick it up. I have a 4x6 that NEEDS to be weighted down or else it bounces all over the hwy. I went through about eight 1500lb straps and had to stop every 10 miles or so to readjust. When I got home, the only thing holding the bike up were two straps and the kickstand. I've since gotten a mountable wheel chock and just have to secure it from the rear.
Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: zarn02 on October 17, 2011, 05:02:44 PM That's all sorts of craptastic. :(
Having my bike depart my trailer at speed is a perpetual fear of mine. Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: DarkMonster620 on October 17, 2011, 05:39:34 PM ab,
I do know what you're going thru ... If you want a Renthal 7/8" just let me know, I'll have to ship from Panama, but I now have clip ons ... On the exhaust side, I'd recommend either visit Ca-cycleworks [http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/products/exhaust-systems?engine_size=213&make=170&model=180] for Remus or Arrow or Monsterparts for Marving [http://www.monsterparts.com/pc/DMAS4/E-M600-1000/DMAS4.html] Either pm me or email me ... Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: Steve.In.Atlanta on October 17, 2011, 07:01:17 PM I'm really sorry to hear about that. I'm sick to my stomache thinking about it.
Best of luck with it hopefully you'll get some insurance money and be able to make it better than before for your next 52K. Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: ab on October 17, 2011, 07:06:45 PM Havnt checked bike yet. Will do full assessment weekend.
Thx for letting me vent here. That bike in price terms is worthless but to me she is priceless and only material thing of value I own and proud of. Carlos - I appreciate the offer. Very kind of you. I will check the link. I have to find out if I can somehow just buy the carbon cover. That is what it seemed done but the inside may be ok. Any info if that is doable? As for insurance, I won't be claiming it. From looks so far the pipe is the biggest. Will see if gauge is busted or tank dent n mainly if engine is ok. Premium will kill me in future if I claim since I have tons tkt. Besides there is no report etc filed at the time so not sure how that works. We were talking about buying choke for that trailor too. Darn. I thnk the trailor suspension is crappy if it has it. Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: SwampMonster on October 17, 2011, 08:01:58 PM That really sux hard. About your exhaust can the guy at Blackdragonexhaust.net might be able to help if all else fails it's worth a try. I almost bought a set of tubes for my cans awhile back so I know he dose that kinda stuff. Good luck.
By the way I have nothing to do with Black Dragon just trying to be helpful. Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: Mother on October 18, 2011, 02:28:15 AM I owe a PIF and I have a set of 620 forks if you need em
Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: gOoIe B on October 18, 2011, 02:55:44 AM My condolences to you good sir, that is a gruesome sight! I only know a fraction of what you're going through, as I too have had my bike go down on a trailer before. I was still inexperienced, and had about a hundred highway miles to cover to get to the service shop for the 6k maintenance. A good friend offered his truck and trailer to help me get it down to the shop and back. Before we even got to the highway, he cut a corner too tight, pulled half the trailer up over a curb, and I watched before my eyes my beloved monster tipping over in the trailer! Luckily for me, not only did the bike stay in the trailer, but the frame slider held the bike up off of the side railing. Suffice to say, after we got her stood up and secured again, I took the longest hundred mile trip EVER .
I will keep my eye on the WTB section; perhaps I can help you out with some replacement parts. Best of luck on your monster (and sanity) rebuild... I'm no expert, but been there ... Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: GLantern on October 18, 2011, 06:50:55 AM As for insurance, I won't be claiming it. Just so you know an insurance claim for a bike falling off the trailer will go under the coverage of the vehicle towing the trailer. I had a friend have the same thing happen when he was towing his bike and they told him that is how it is done and that is how he did it. So how much do you like your friends is a good question to ask ;) Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: fastwin on October 18, 2011, 07:43:51 AM Coming from a family that owns a trucking company that uses flat bed trailers to haul heavy building materials (and before that heavy equipment) my genes are geared toward tying stuff down. Know what you are doing and use the proper equipment. Sounds easy but it's not. I can't believe the way I have seen people strap stuff down in pick ups and trailers! [bang] If it looks "iffy" then it probably is.
Again, sorry for your woes. I am sure there are several threads buried in this forum regarding tying down bikes for transport. I don't need to see them but I am sure other folks do. Nothing worse than seeing your pride and joy tossed from a trailer/truck bed because you didn't secure it properly. The worst injuries are the ones that are self inflicted. :P [roll] Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: ab on October 18, 2011, 05:15:43 PM I really really appreciate this forum and some of the members that offered some help and info. It means a lot and makes me glad I am part of DMF family. I got friends that I ride with that even laugh when hear about this. I don't understand ppl but my instinct reaction is not to laugh at someone's misfortune. But I think venting here with DMF members and discussing helps. I have zero mechanical fixing skill so it means a lot to learn from everyone here. Thanks again.
It will be a winter project to look into fixing her up and out on the road. Time to start saving up again. It's a roller coaster with bikes. You got to pay to play. My problem now will be when ride this bike, I will wonder what else is wrong and be paranoid about it. Scuffs are fine but It will be on my mind if something in engine etc is loose etc. I am guessing things need to be re-torqued, tightened etc this winter. I owe a PIF and I have a set of 620 forks if you need em I will keep that in mind. I think it is just a scuff (hope so) but will assess in winter to see what is going on. thank you so much for offer and will update you in winter. [thumbsup]My condolences to you good sir, that is a gruesome sight! I only know a fraction of what you're going through, as I too have had my bike go down on a trailer before. Best of luck on your monster (and sanity) rebuild... Glad you did not have major damage. I looked at the trailer again and it really needs to be braced. A buddy and I bought it this summer but really need to work on it. Need to get Choke installed and braced big time since it flexes. Any info or links etc, I appreciate sharing the info. [thumbsup] pm sent, as for the gauges, if they're busted, remember you have to options [imho]: 1. go for new one OEM, upwards of $2000.00 or reflash EC, [aprox $250.00+s/h] and install any gauge you like ... as said this is mho .. I'm no expert, but been there ... Will keep that in mind. Have not attempted to start the bike yet. I have a feeling she will be alright (power of positive thinking). I am hoping it does not need work even though it is scuffed up a lot on the top part of the gauge. Wow the price on the OEM you show is ridiculous. One needs a F U money to buy that I would assume. [ Just so you know an insurance claim for a bike falling off the trailer will go under the coverage of the vehicle towing the trailer. I had a friend have the same thing happen when he was towing his bike and they told him that is how it is done and that is how he did it. So how much do you like your friends is a good question to ask ;) Good to know. But I will say this in on a serious note. In a group ride with friends, things are bound to happen. I have heard of group rides where one gets clipped or hit from behind by another biker and they get sued. I personally find that deplorable when it is an accident. Intentional stupidity that causes accidents is another story. I was clipped by a rider beginning of season with luckily very minor damage. I didn't accuse rider to pay for damages and would not consider it. What i didn't appreciate was the rider friend not even calling next day to check up on me ( Ofcourse I will never ride with him ) In this case, we all had a great time in W Virginia riding. The driver let us stay at his grand ma house. We rode together and used his truck and attached my trailer (co-owned). Even if he was not exactly riding slow on the bumps or whole way and even though they help put my bike up on the trailer (since I am worthless at knowing how to do any of this stuff but need to learn) , in the end It is my responsibility and mine alone. There has got to be honor amongst friends, riders in general. When ride in group something is bound to happen. Am i alone in this thinking ? Yes, this was a self inflict. No doubt about it. It's like when I ride and I see pickup with ladders or hauling anything, I stay far far away and clear from them as possible for this exact reason (things falling off, like.. :'( ) Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: Steve.In.Atlanta on October 18, 2011, 06:04:39 PM It is my responsibility and mine alone. The first time I started wrenching on my bike I about had a panic attack that I was going to irrevocably damage something on my girl... my friend who had been encouraging me to start modding the bike nearly had to slap me to get me to calm the @#$^ down, at which point I realized it really wasn't that hard. If you don't already have one, get a service manual. That will help you for disassembly/reassembly procedures. I tore my 750 down to the frame last winter to fix some paint damage (crappy battery vented acid on the frame), and the service manual was invaluable. You'll also get a lot of respect from fellow Duc riders who pay the shop to do all of their work. I also know what you mean about the paranoia from wondering whether you reassembled something correctly. Take lots of pictures as you tear down and rebuild, and my trick for keeping nuts/bolts/miscellaneous pieces together was a labeled ziploc bag for every step in the assembly (e.g., "Triple Tree Bolts, Front rotor bolts, rear seat latch parts, air box miscellaneous, etc). I think the ziploc trick more than anything ensured that everything got back to the right place, then a torque wrench and a couple of bottles of red loctite later I'm not horribly worried about anything falling apart. Future disassemblies are another matter, but that's something to worry about in the future. :P Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: Howie on October 18, 2011, 09:58:31 PM When you get a list together post what you need.

Anyhow, having never fixed anything, I got to learn from the basics of using tools and on. So you can see I got long ways to go. I do change my own oil and lube my chain etc. Need to step it up now. [Howie] I will have to inspect what my bike and see what she needs soon when I have access to the bike as it is at a friends shop. Glad it is end of season (never thought i would say that before). headlight bezel (got extra bucket, so that will take care of that ) replace frame slider (speedy moto did a great job saving her) Pipes Oh the Pipes... Not sure if it can be straightened or get a used one somewhere Gear Shifter bent. Hopefully can bend it back or find a used part Rear set - have asked someone to see if they can weld the aluminum as it is broken. Or look for used one (left side) Handle bar - needs replacement oh my CRG shorty brake lever golden one .. Broken... need to replace oh my CRG clutch lever the adjuster is broken but seems to be usable CRG mirror - done needs replacement forks - seems to have some damage on it but I am not 100% sure yet... just great.. need to test Rotors - those were expensive althon replacement I did. I pray they are not warped. Speed Gauge - seems to work but is bruised up badly. (If I can find plastic case I can repair) Tank dent - seems minor Tank clip - broken need to replace that Bar end - i only had one and that is damaged. -- need to have mechanic friend tear her up and me start learning fixing things and see more injury... darn it. oh before I forget, any recommendation on what type of tie downs are best recommended? (for transporting a bike... I cringe at the idea now) I use these for both of my bikes. The safety clips are great since I can keep the straps a bit looser and keep tension off the suspension. http://store.ekusa.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_5&products_id=2 (http://store.ekusa.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_5&products_id=2) Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: il d00d on November 02, 2011, 09:30:58 AM I have some stock fork reflectors - upgraded to carbon, lemme know if you need the original ones.

That and front straps on the lower triple and you should have no problems with bouncy things.

It's actually lot better than my other bike which after lowside last year is not aligned right. Need to replace that first than the monster. Have started looking for parts in here. Exhaust can cover - called Remus to c if they have it (just the carbon cover) and am waiting for call back and price. All in all, still looking for part... Yep conversion didn't work :-( Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: hillbillypolack on November 06, 2011, 07:50:45 AM That's quite a bummer. It's the worst when you know it's dropped, then trying to gather the bike up and get it home. Sorry to hear about your misfortune.
But now you understand the importance of proper trailering equipment. Wheel chock, Canyon Dancers, soft ties and Ancra straps are all minimum equipment for trailering a bike. Good luck with your bike's recovery and let's hope next spring will see it on the road again. I've been emailing back and forth with blackdragonexhaust.net. I am hoping i can get the pipe sleeves from them. But I have not gotten a phone number from the emailer yet. Simply said send specs and takes about 3-4 weeks. This was a great suggestion. I think this is the solution for me for cheap without having to replace my pipe. Can't find any other alternative. Has anyone here dealt with this company ? or any other alternatives? Finally took out the pipe and looks like i got more damage and not just the pipe CF Sleeve. Still getting some used parts from the forum. So far i have got ( brake lever, frame slider puck, tank latch, headlight assembly). Need to get rear-set welded too. Talking to black exhaust url mentioned in the forum to hopefully fix the pipe. I may have to send it there and keep my fingers crossed. url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6468929859/](http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7018/6468929859_d63fa3b7a3_b.jpg)[/url] 2011-12-06 - 19-26-19 - remus pipe damage - 92 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6468929859/#) by ab_duc620M2004 (http://www.flickr.com/people/35374145@N02/), on Flickr (http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7005/6468928815_6b11aa4e19_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6468928815/) 2011-12-06 - 19-26-40 - remus pipe damage - 94 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6468928815/#) by ab_duc620M2004 (http://www.flickr.com/people/35374145@N02/), on Flickr (http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7145/6468928125_ac7de9aaa1_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6468928125/) 2011-12-06 - 19-27-03 - remus pipe damage - 96 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6468928125/#) by ab_duc620M2004 (http://www.flickr.com/people/35374145@N02/), on Flickr (http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7154/6468927661_f16f1e8a50_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6468927661/) 2011-12-06 - 19-25-32 - remus pipe damage - 89 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6468927661/#) by ab_duc620M2004 (http://www.flickr.com/people/35374145@N02/), on Flickr (http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7151/6468925853_f67b6b00d7_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6468925853/) 2011-12-06 - 19-26-14 - remus pipe damage - 91 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35374145@N02/6468925853/#) by ab_duc620M2004 (http://www.flickr.com/people/35374145@N02/), on Flickr Title: Re: My beloved DM620 with 52K -jumped off trailer Post by: rgramjet on December 08, 2011, 03:29:01 AM How much do they want to fix the slip on vs buying a good condition used set? $250-$400 seems to be the range for cf low pipes in my experience....

Don't know yet. Will update when I find out. The pipe is not a total waste. If the inner stuff is fine and hopefully few torch and bang type of fix, it should be brought back to life (i hope) and get a new sleeve for it. If it is way to expensive, then I am screwed [bang] God forbid I may have to go back to stock ( which i got rid of when the bike was a mere 100miles ) Yeah for real. Those pipes look wanked Yes, that is what happens in such incidents. :'( Pretty bummed. Will see if mechanic friend can try fix it n just ride it without the sleeve if possible. Just don't have funds for the pipe now. We named the trailer "Ducati killer" Won't sell her, will have to finagle something. Still luv her n hope for another 50k or more on her. Frame slider puck replaced , brake lever replace , headlight almost finished - need to buy the HID bulb , rear set needs welding , still hoping no fork damage. So since the price of a new pipe is out of question and the used pipe cost is out of my budget, friends are have started to work on it (personally i have no clue so all i hear is insults hurled for not knowing anything mechanical - the price to pay for free fix up ) Fixing the pipe now. Initial stage. Cut and now need some weld done and resin on the Carbon small cracks. here is picture of the pipe being cut. Bike is ridable now. Test rode her tiny bit. Will pick her up this weekend.
Will work on installing the bulb this weekend and replacing the CF belt cover that I just noticed has a hole in it with my stock belt covers. I don't think I will buy CF parts again. I have noticed the wear and browning of it as the years went by on the belt covers. Here is some pics of replaced parts. Pipe - damaged CF cut and welded back on. Replaced - Foot peg, Headlight Bezel, Oil Sensor, Left side frame slider puck, CRG lever, sanded adjuster on brake lever, rear set welded (hope it holds up) All in all I probably spent $150 on parts and bike friends took of the labor FREEBIE !! :-) Remaining Item - replace CF belt cover with stock as it has hole in it as you can see in the pic. If want to see original damage, go to page 1 of thread. There is some paint work to do on the rear set weld to blacken it. I will see what can I can do for the swing arm as well.
