Hey guys, I've been on the forum for a bit now. For some of you that recognize me, I just returned from Afghanistan and was thinking about selling my Monster, until I sat on it and rode it. Now she is in the stable to stay.
Well anyway, on the the subject. A fellow Marine noticed I had ridden to work the other day and looked at my bike. He saw me with my helmet, an AGV T-2, and said "Why would you have an AGV if you ride a Duc?" I replied something to the affect of, AGV is a good piece of gear. If fit my head and face well, a very comfortable helmet. I know there are "better" helmets out there but comment like this kinda get under my skin. Just looking for comments guys.
I wouldn't worry about it. I ride a Ducati but am not willing to drop $400+ on an Arai, Shoei, Schubert etc.
I have a KBC which is a solid, decently priced brand and an Xspeed, which is a budget brand but still approved.
Does said fellow Marine ride too? If not, it was just an ignorant statement based on ads & propaganda.
JM
I'm with JM,
If it is to your liking stick with it.
More expensive lids usually just have more features (e softer padding, less noise, etc).
ps Thanks for serving and welcome home. [thumbsup]

Yes, he rides a chopper. I just figured it was, as you put it so perfectly, "ignorant statement based on ads and propaganda." Still kinda pisses me off though, oh well.
'Sounds like the similar statement of "you ride a Harley, why are you wearing a helmet". Every head is different. I own an Arai, but it is my personal choice. The last thing I would do is criticize someone for the brand of helmet they wear. Its not what you wear, its that you wear it.

Yeah, I was just going to choose an entry level helmet that was DOT approved until I stumbled upon this great deal. It was basically with my color scheme, red and black, and it was knocked down from $500 to $200! Good discount for me coming back from Afghan! I was stunned! Thanks for the friendly comment bro! Much appreciated.

Well put, bro.

If the helmet fits it's the right helmet for you.
I wear an AGV GP-Tech because it fits and it's less than an ARAI.
I've crashed in one hard enough to shatter the c/f shell and didn't even see stars or have a concussion.
Rossi wears one too...he rides a Duc. ;)

First off, my apologies for the wrong thread area. Thanks for moving it. I was going to say Rossi wears an AGV, didn't want to seem shallow. Hahaha
AGV.... crappy helmet? [bang]
It's their second most advanced helmet, now replaced by the Grid.
Affordable yes, but 'crappy' is way way waaayyyy off.

Don't ever be sorry.
It's OK to admit you are wrong. ;D
AGV makes excellent helmets, I don't own one because they simply don't fit my head. Did you ask the "critic" what is wrong with AGV? Bet he hasn't a clue.
I wish I fit the AGV's... I had to decide between a GP-Tech Rossi 5 Continents and a Arai RX-Q, both around the same price. The AGV was awesome, I'm a big fan of the Rossi gfx (I think it's one of the few ways to wear hi viz yellow and look normal at the same time)... but it just didnt fit my head. Too tight around the ears for me, the shell smashed them down to my skull and one size larger was way too big. Compared to the RX-Q, the GP-tech has a more plush interior and great high end looking touches.
I finally got the RX-Q because once I put it on it just fit perfectly from the start. So like everyone here has said... the best helmet for you is the one that fits.
I wore an ARAI RX-7 for years.
When it came time to replace the 'replacement' model didn't fit the same.
The Q wasn't available at the time...I'm glad for that.
If I could try one on somewhere near here (Iowa), and I liked its fit, I would buy this one in a hearbeat

had the same problem, got an XD3 instead
Wha? Italian bike, Italian helmet...makes sense to me. OK, maybe some models are made in China or Korea, or whatever, but they are designed and styled in Italy and are very good helmets. Unfortunately, they dont fit my big ol' fat head...I bought an S4 in the red/white stripe scheme (perfect for a red/white S2R!), but it didnt fit right and I had to return it. Looked really nice though!
are you sure he wasn't just pulling your leg?
i have never heard or read anything about bad quality associated with agv helmets. see the rossi reference...
i have the above mentioned s4 in red and white, which fits my noggin perfectly. also fits my red s2r. :) love it.
sounds like the guy was just jealous that he can't handle a Duc and has to ride a hog. you wear what fits, and what you can afford. I have been picking up good gear as it come on sale and I have money. So far I have been able to get helmets as raffle prizes and eventually I'll actually pay for one. right now I rock a matte black fulmer ss, but dainese pants jacket and boots. Welcome home and Semper Fi
here's what I look for in a helmet
fit, safety rating, price
here's what I don't look for in a helmet
brand, who's wearing it
I don't generally like using helmets with number or replicas, but I would defnitely rock this one:

I got a GP tech and i have To say its money well spent.

I like that one, even the yellow version isn't all that bad.
Has anyone ridden the AGV Grid???

They're only taking preorders, so I think that's too early.
where does the Grid fit in the line-up?

It replaces the T2 and is second after the GP Tech.
I have a T-2 Ago replica, I notced it's now called the AGV Grid Agostini Replica Helmet. I bought it to wear when I ride the Paso I picked up. I like it better than the overpriced Arai DP Corse helmet I have, not quite as much as my Shoei RF1100, about the same as the Scorpion EXO1000. It's a good helmet and I'm happy with the purchase.
Is it dot / snell? If it is, its as crash worthy as any 1000 helpmet out. The other helmets costs more becuase of high end features and light weight. Those items cost more, therefore they cost you more. They will make your ride more confortable.. but they wont make your ride any more safe.
Ill give you a good example. Ive been riding around on old used icon helmet that was given to me. Ive had it so long, I got used to it. Simply replaced the shield.
REcently had the opportunoty to own a new shoei rx12. 00000000000000000 my god. what a difference. It feels like im not wearing a helmet at all! the field of view is ridicoulous, the air flow??? literally can feel the breeze from front to back.
so what am i getting at? I didnt know what i was missing, until I had the chance to ride with the x12. However, all of the improvements are bells and whistles.. creature comforts.
In most reviews the Shoei RF1100 scores higher than the X-12. The X-12 is really a race helmet and some of it's features are designed for racing posture and environment. The Shoei Quest comes in a close second to the Shoe RF1100 and even scores higher in some tests, but the one major drawback on the Quest is the interior is not fully removeable, just the cheek pads. Just some adddtnal information. - Gene
I've had 3 helmets. Arai, Shoei, and Scorpion. I started with the Arai and slowly have been decreasing cost. The Scorpion has more features, but slightly heavier than the other 2. Tha Arai's airflow and lightness is not enough for me to justify the price. The Shoei has been the best of both worlds.

Checked it out at the bike shop today, seem to fit better than my old X-R2. Keen for some onroad feedback before i book it up
Which AGV, the Grid? What exactly do you want to know? Apparently my AGV is now called the Grid, it was a T-2 when I bought it. I updated my post. - Gene

Just the usual wind noise, ventilation, strange air movement (when i look right i get a blast of air in my left eye from my old girl) etc...

Wind noise is almost as good as a Shoei RF1100, the helmet is a little breezy and it seems like the air is coming up from chin area rather than through the front vents, I noticed this in colder rides, below 60 degrees. The helmet has good ventilation but to be honest I have not used it yet in really hot, humid conditions. The shield release mechanism is a bit hard, but once you get use to it and realize you are not going to break anything it's okay. The liner and helmet confort are very good. The graphics and build quality are very good. There is a nice review here http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/agv-t-2/ (http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/agv-t-2/) and I would agree with what they say about the helmet. - Gene
agv is an italian brand is it not?! so whats the problem? i have an agv, its one of the quietest helmets ive used, i just picked up a nolan but my bike is put away for the season so i havent had to use it on the road yet
My next helmet (this summer) is gonna be a Bell Custom 500 and a pair of goggles [drink]
