Regarding at the 749 as the midrange version of 999 and the 848 of 1098/1198 the small Panigale should be a 849 or may be a 899 ...

I still think it's a Turkey. Putting a penguin on a motorcycle is just silly.

Ideally with some measure of success (which is something I don't recall much of with the 748 or 749, at least not at the world level).

You have to remember it's only a turkey if it's facing the left, otherwise it's an eagle. Unless you are riding south, then it's a swan on when it's facing left and a bird when it's facing right.

I thought I read that it might be an ostrich if you are riding north in the western hemisphere in the year 2012 and it's facing left.

FWIW - Formula Extreme in AMA does not exist anymore, it's now Daytona SportBike and Ducati has been pretty well represented with multiple 848(now EVO) entries in that class. The 848 EVO is also authorized for Supersport, but believe it gets a weight penalty in that class. For 2012 I'm not sure who is riding what, I know Celtic Racing/FBF is still running an 848, but believe Latus(DiSalvo) switched to Triumph. I do not know what the rules are for FIM World Supersport or in BSB. - Gene

I think one of the Duc shops who might be a sponsor (can't remember shit at my age) destroked an 848 to get it under the cc limit for a series.

I always wondered why Ducati went up to the 848 instead of keeping the 750 for supersport

in my short search I only saw 750 twins allowed in FIM Supersport. in Fact the 848 doesn't qualify for any series as the Superstock and Superbike require twins over 850.

Yes, this is good information regarding the AMA classes from Gene.   We have compiled the rules and classes for each major league and hope to put them into a nice, consolidated place online, as it is difficult to find much of the information quickly online. 

Perhaps Ducati will produce the Supersport-class bike without the deficiencies accompanying the 848.  It is the first superbike in many years from Ducati without an S-model or R-model with improved superbike specification frame and upgraded suspension or wheels.  At last the 848evo had the steering damper, but it is too little too late!  The economy frame and triples, without factory high-performance models is sad for fans of supersport!
