Title: Just picked up an 01 M900Sie
Post by: BMiller on April 01, 2012, 04:56:49 PM
I couldn't resist!  I parted the goodies off my R1, then sold the R1 on Friday.....drove to my buddy's place in Knoxville last night and then continued on to Nashville to pick up my new (to me) 2001 Ducati Monster 900Sie.  Got home around 4PM today.  She's been sitting for 3 years being started every few months.  Dude said he'd put like 10 miles on it over the last few years.  The p/o was super cool and so was his wife.  They are both serious cyclists so we shot the sh*t about that for a bit along with some Ducati talk.  This girl has just over 10k on the clock, Termignoni exhaust, and some aftermarket clipons (Cycle Cat most likely, but I'll have to look for markings). He threw in a front and rear stand, riding jacket, gloves, and a helmet.  To complete the trip....while in Knoxville I bought my buddy's Trek 2100 that I've been drooling over for a few years.  Decided to get into road cycling as well.  Quite an adventure today!  My 2001 M900Sie I used to have is one of the only bikes I regret selling.  I sold it to pay off some credit card debt to move back to TN in '07.  Here are some pics of the bike on the trailer on the way home. ;D

And one of the bicycle in pieces:

Now I was warned that it took a while to warm up before it would run well, but that was expected since it hadn't been ridden much at all.  He had the fuel tank recoated inside by a very well known Ducati dealer at the tune of around $750 and had the fuel system cleaned out....HOWEVER....it was still having issues.  I decided "what the hell, I'll check to see if the airbox is modded" and get a better idea of what is going on underneath.......I pop the tank and.....

Looks like some mice called this airbox home!

Luckily the K&N was still sealed and unmolested.  The shopvac made quick work of it.  Good as new!  I didn't take it outside to test it, but I promise that was the issue  [laugh]

She's in good hands now!

Congrats - nice bike (tho I'm biased as a fellow '01 900Sie owner)

Mice are amazing - glad they didn't do more damage

Yes sir.  While I'd love a Monster 1100....there's just something about the '00-01 900 that does it for me.  I used to hate red Monsters....but this one is growing on me [laugh]

I'm probably one of the only people that has popped the tank, saw the evidence of mice, and laughed.  In a way it was nicer then having to diagnose another issue as the wiring all looks good (thank God) [thumbsup]

Time to get out the tools - she'll need some work before you ride much.

The belts need a change. They are probably original and need to be replaced.
New fluids, hydraulic, oils (including fork) as well.
Tires are not from 2001, so looks like you're set there
For some reason the LH slipon is on the right and vise versa... only really matters due to stickers. They are the same part number of both sides.

But she's a looker - just a little TLC and you're ready!

I noticed the exhaust in the pics he sent me before buying it.  It'll get turned around this weekend.  He included quite a bit of documentation with the bike, so I'm going to check when the belts were last serviced before replacing.  I know it's suggested you replace the belts every 2 yrs.  I always flush the brake/clutch fluid when I get my hands on a bike so that too will be done this weekend.  Fork oil I've never replaced, but that wouldn't be a bad idea either.  I already started sourcing some parts. [thumbsup]

Fork oil isn't hard - if you've got a triple lift. But it is a little fussy and potentially messy if you're not ready for it.

I do have a good triple lift.  I'll have to search the site for a walk through.

I feel like a proud Papa, glad you make it back into the ranks buddy! (now I can consider you a true friend again  [clap])

Do not do the fork oil if you are planning on immediate suspension mods.  You only want to do it once, its messy, and having spring depressor and holding tool take out MOST of the frustration.  I have those tools if needed.

That bike looks great, never thought I would like high mounts, but they look good on that 900.

[laugh] Will that's too good man!  yeah, I was never a fan of the HM pipes either, but I do like them on her.  I need to ride it and see how the suspension feels first I think....I know the service interval isn't till 20k-ish, but the age would be a good reason for it.  Of course knowing myself, I think I'd want to upgrade once in there.  I need to source an Ohlins shock for this thing since that was hands down one of the best mods on my former Monster.

I rode to class last night...funny thing was, I rolled it out and knew I'd have to stop at the gas station to put air in the tires.  I was cutting it close on time so I geared up, hopped on and chug chug pffffftttt....haha, the battery was tapped (not surprising)....well I had already committed to riding so I WAS RIDING!  Hell, I even pulled the upper fairing off (so much better IMO) and mounted my tag!  I turned her around and rolled her to the street....I have never push started a bike that was this freakin easy to push start!  Didn't have any issues after that, but once I got home I threw her on the trickle charger just incase.

Arriving home:

Very nice, good luck with your ride. Pretty much the grand daddy of Monsters, well excluding carb'd models.
The M900 looks the part.
Black out as much as possible including the frame, think it looks so much better. High mounts look
nice imo.

Have you checked the rear ride height?  I just jacked up my '99 City, and I really love it.

I have not checked it to be honest.  I'll tell you what....going from my R1 back to a Monster is quite a change [laugh]

I don't know how I didn't get in trouble last night [Dolph]

Well damn, is that thing gonna get a pillow and knitted throw cover as well!  I mean in the house, on the carpet!  [clap]

+1 on the ride height....makes a huge difference.  I bought some 1" extenders to get even more out of it and love having more weight towards the front end...bike drops into the corners with ease.

Being an "S" model, shouldn't it have come with the Ohlins from the factory?

I just wish the p/o hadn't converted the garage to a "master bedroom" that I still use as a shop/garage for the bikes [laugh]

Today I ordered a few things:

Belts
K&N Oil Filter
Drain Bolt Crush Washer
O-Ring for Oil Screen
Left and Right Engine Cover Gaskets

and I also picked up some Mobile 1 Racing 4T 10W-40.

 [thumbsup]

We're planning on putting the house on the market after this year and getting a house with a garage this time around.  While I did consider it, the square footage is double that of my neighbor's house since the downstairs is finished.  I'll hold out, but tempting! [coffee]

Very Nice!! and I am a biased on-looker as well

Here is my 2002 titled 900SIE

Picked it up box-stock used 2 or so years ago with 5K miles on it

since done a few bolt-on mods and tweaks and lost the front bonnet

Fired right up yesterday after sitting for about 8 months...never had a Duc this rock solid and problem-free

Very nice RAT!  I do like the yellow [thumbsup]

I managed to ride to work today.  It was awesome.....as expected.  I can't believe 2 owners ago the guy disabled the kickstand cutoff so you could start the bike with the stand down...and the p/o PAID a dealer to fix it back to stock....I'm gonna have to re-reverse that as I can't sit on it and warm it up every AM before work.

Yup...go figure on some DPOs' ideas....my old Duc was a carbed 96 M900....sold it at 25K miles and got off the bikes for a year or 3

got the itch again and found the yellow dog for 4500 w/only 5k miles on it and snapped it up.....had been sitting for a few years

even came with the immobilizer key and the card, manuals etc

I tail-chopped, new michelin tires, new belts, oil, and then started the other mods once I confirmed it was a runner

finding the time to ride it is my challenge these days....I only have it up to 7K miles

This one had just under 10,300 on it when I got it.  I'll probably put quite a few commuting miles on it this year as I suffer from the same issue as you, finding time to ride.  I'll try to hit the mountains on the weekends as much as possible, but we'll see where that gets me [laugh]

very nice...not even due for the 12K checkup

I will probably trailer mine down to my Asheville house next season...

it will get more (and better quality use) than it does up here in NY

you're smack in the middle of the best riding territory in the East  so your commute could be fun  ;)

Methinks you are correct - I chopped my Remus just enough to eliminate the  forward rivet hole for the logo
Mine are really short - maybe that's why I missed yours.......

They almost line up with the rearmost part of the bike which is the aesthetic I was going for.

I'll probably keep them.  I usually go with higher pipes on my bikes.  Should the clamp have the bolt through it and then into the mount or be on both sides of the mount with the bolt through?  It seems too tight with them on the same side, but loose on opposed sides....

It was a factory option, not every "S" came with an Ohlins.  This is my second M900Sie that didn't come with one just like my 748S didn't come with one. [thumbsup]

This reminds me how much I miss my '00 M900ie.

(Gul-durn thieves...)

Really gonna have to get another 900ie, one of these days.

My brother got a nice 2001 900Sie, no Ohlins. Buddy had a 2000 900Sie,  Ohlins shock. I have heard that although carbed M900S models generally had the Sachs shock, some got the Ohlins, but I haven't seen one.

It's the Ducati luck of the draw.

The 2001 M900, the last of the old 888 framed 900s. Very nice. [thumbsup]

The 2000 S was kind of a one-off. If rumor holds true they all got Ohlins as Ducati had a bunch and with the planned frame transition coming up they had to so something with them. So the 2000 900S got some extra bling. Also has the floating rear caliper wich no other monster shipped with.

Hey SupraGuy74 - I'd love to see a write up on how you did that light - parts etc. I bet others would as well. Could we get you to do a write up in the tutorials?

Nice bike.I too just bought a 2001 M900S,it has the Sachs shock and I plan on changing the spring as it is a cheaper mod, then once it blows I'll get the Ohlins. Also will do new fork springs and gold valves.I really need to add a bigger rear sprocket as it's just plain silly, stock.I took off the belt covers to check belts and a piece that holds the nuts in place had broken off and wedged itself against the belt.Yikes! Well,it was scheduled to go over to Eric at Clubhouse Motorsports for belts and valve adj. anyways.
My last bike (RC51) had a Sato CF HM exhaust, the PO had reversed the cans,I think some people do it to hide the badges so it is not as obvious to the police that you have a race exhaust but on that set-up they were slightly different (not the same part #).
The critters did the same thing to my airbox in a Toyota Tacoma I had.

I did the same thing with my Sachs rear shock...Eric @ Clubhouse changed my spring out for an Ohlins one...helped enormously...

full-adjust Ohlins swap was on my list but no hurry now,

I'll wait until the Sachs pisses out

Still planning to drop the front tubes at the end of some season and have Eric do a full rework of those as well

Nice looking bike, you did a good job with the tail light blinker set-up.
Regarding the exhaust,it looks like a 2 into 1 into 2 pipe but it doesn't appear that there is another slip-on on the other side,is this correct? If so what did you do?

When I rescued her in SC, we were told she was a full pit, but now we believe her to be a pit/boxer mix.  She's 6y/o and I rescued her at 3mo old.  My best friend.  Full grown and about 43 lbs.

On my way home from the ride in the previous post, my headlight blew out.  Thank God it was daytime.  So I replaced that.  Also decided to start my fork swap and sold my "S" forks in favor of 998 TIN Showa's.  And of course while having it apart time for everything else I can think of, so I replaced the taillight with an LED smoked integrated light, pulled the belt covers for painting, pulled the clutch apart and found why it's not been engaging as I would like....so new clutch coming along with tasty bling for it, etc. etc.....

You can download the parts catalog from Ducati's web site, and they'll have them listed. I've found them really helpful in running down older parts. It appears that they're called "clamps" and are part numbers 8000.70127 and 8000.70133 in the 2002 998s parts catalog.

Thanks bro!  Get some tools and turn some wrenches.  I'm still new to a lot of it, but after you do a few small things you start getting into the bigger things.  I have so much to learn still, but the great thing about these forums and places like youtube etc. there are TONS of information that walk you through almost anything. The pics aren't the best, nor is the headlight mounted in the second one....but after thinking it over I took a metal bar I had laying around from a custom YZF750 gauge mount I made....and hacked it down into two mounts to lower my gauges.  I need to trim them up and paint them, but at the test fitting it looks AWESOME!  Here is a before/after comparison:

Painted my belt covers today, did a crappy job on 1 cover since it had some paint issues mixed with random bugs/shit floating into wet paint, along with my headlight mount brackets.  I didn't mess with fixing the one cover.  I may strip it down later, but it's the one that's covered on that end by the tank so it really doesn't matter.  This was a cheap fix for now anyways.

I'm going to have to stop taking pics of my project with my IPhone and start taking them with an actual camera since these just don't do it justice!  I cleaned up the clutch area and installed my NGR clutch basket, NGR billet clutch drum, Barnett clutch, Giamoto pressure plate, DP clutch star and springs, Speedymoto clutch cover, installed new belts, and put my freshly painted belt covers back on.  Not bad for under 2 hours of work.....if you can call it that  [laugh]

I just picked up an NGR Billet Clutch Basket and Barnett clutch pack.
The billet hub and pressure plate will have to wait.

How much weight savings are you getting with the NGR hub?

Wow!  When my '01 M900 grows up, it wants to look just like that one.

5/6/2012 - Well, got all my finals done and put in a little work last night.  Got the bars mounted just right along with having drilled them and mounted all the controls.  Waiting on my headlight fork tube clamps and she's a rider again.  [thumbsup]

5/7/2012 - Had to rebleed the clutch, but she started right up and apparently I did the belts right.  [laugh]

The front fender rubs the sides of the tire on both sides of the rear, so I emailed the company about that.  Still waiting on the headlight brackets.....
