Title: Electrical Issue / Won't Start / 696
Post by: DucaChic on June 27, 2012, 05:06:11 PM
Getting the bike out of storage late this year (no bashing please). Had it on a tender all winter, when disconnecting the tender showed battery charged.

Pulled bike outside, Key on, instruments displayed, switched on, choke, pressed start and everything went dead. No click, no sound, nothing. Key off.

Checked fuses, all good. Brought bike inside, connected tender, connection good, battery fully charged. Disconnected tender, Key on, NO instruments displayed, headlight dim, switched on, choke, pressed start, nothing. Key off.

Key on, waited.

Headlight begins to flash slowly, audible click from somewhere (ECU?). Instrument display on, everything illuminated, then off again. Clicking continues, headlight flashing in sync with click. Key off.

Key on, ckickng resumes, Headlight flashes withaudible click from somewhere. Instrument display on again, everything illuminated, then off again. Clicking continues, headlight flashing in sync with click. Key off.

Read to call shop.

Thoughts?

Have the battery load tested.  Fully charged does not mean good.  If the battery tests good check the battery terminal connections and engine ground are good.

Your tender has probably killed the battery.

What howie and suzyj said (http://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/nod.gif)

1) Dead battery/loose or corroded terminals.
2) Main ground-to-frame bolt loose - its located under the black plastic cover to the LHS of the horizontal cylinder.

+1 on on needing your battery checked.

And not pertinent to this, but for future info. Most bikes have a fuse box for the individual circuits AND a main fuse. For example on my 900, there's the box and a big 30 amp fuse that's hung off the battery box. If nothing at all was happening that'd be something to check.

And you bike doesn't have a choke. Only carby bikes to. FI bike, like my 900 and former 620, have a fast idle lever - though some of the more recent builds don't

Good luck - hopefully it's just battery issue. How old is the batt btw?

Appreciate the feedback.

It's on it's way to the shop for service.

Well, after all that, it was just a dead battery; they installed the new battery and my Monster sprung to life. Looking to pick it up tomorrow and finally get out there with the rest of you.  [thumbsup]
