Title: My Ducati Monster 900S 2000 .. and some questions.
Post by: rorschach on October 29, 2012, 05:26:12 AM
Good day.

Happy to say i just bought my first Ducati !

After asking here http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=48241.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=48241.0)
And documenting about the 620, i bought a 900 S from 2000 with ~30.ooo miles ;D

So happy i have the 'original' 904cc engine from the Monster and all the goodies from being an S - aluminium swing arm, wider tyre in the back, fully ajustable Showa front fork and an Ohlins rear shock ..all stock. Plus it has a Termi exhaust.

And how it feels ... WOW .. it's like a rabbit lion on steroids and every time i ride it i fell like on of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse.  ;D

Now it's in the shop for a complete maintenace (from belts and bearings, desmo, all the consumables, liquids, forks seals etc) to be sure it's
in 100% in shape.
Some pics

--------------------
So these are my questions:

1. What is the dry weight of it ?
All the sites say 184 kg (407 pounds) ... so plus the battery, the ~ 16 L of fuel tank and oil that means over ~ 210 kg. (~ 463 lbs)

I'm asking because it feels so damn light !!!
I road some time on a Yamaha R1 from 2002 with a dry weight of 177 kg plus everything ~ 200 kg and it feels like a freight train.
Is the Monster so well balanced? Wow. ( i know by heart all the tehnical details why a Ducati is so great/unique - but i never thought a gap so big between a fell of a bike to another.)

2. So i have 16L of fuel capacity.
How much is a normal range for it?
And what is the fuel consumption for let's say normal cruising at 60-80 mph (100-130 km/h ).

Thank you.

1. Not really sure... you could go weight it at a dump...

2. I generally fill up around 100 miles, just to be safe. On my 900S, I usually get about 45 mpg total ride average.

Since she's an older bike, you should make sure that your belts are less than two years of age. And should consider having the shock serviced as well as new fork oil. Mine's of a similar milage and I needed my shock serviced in the high 20 thousand miles. It felt *much* better after!

Ok thanks.

Yep, i mentioned it's in the shop - from the belts to the forks etc. :)
I'll look into rear shock also.

Back then Ducati's dry weight was closer to wet than it is today, plus the aftermarket exhaust  knocks off a few pounds where it matters.  Great bike, congrats!

My 2001 M900S goes about 125 miles before the reserve light goes on and takes about 3 gal. to fill it from that point.
So I guess i'm getting about 41.5 mpg.

Thanks for the imput.

Another thing.

So max hp power is at 8250 rpm right?  And torque 6250 ?
And what is the limiter when the ECU cuts power ? 9000 rpm ?

Red line is 9K, power should be cut a little higher than that.

that is a twin to mine. Great bike. (yes i am bias) i get around 130 miles till the light comes on and had better find a station withing 20.

Make sure you check the clutch slave cyl. they are crap castings and most leak and rebuilding it just prolongs the inevitable replacement. I got a great billet one out of germany that works great.

I also had to change the seat as the stock one was painful after an hour in the seat. put on a DP gel and cured the issue.

Happy riding

That must have cost quite a bit?

Good that it'll all be sorted nicely though.

Shit! For all that work and parts... that's a great deal. You've listed $400-500 in parts alone. I need to visit that shop...

Yup. And i bought everything from them so i also have warranty etc.  [beer]

Today i got my licence plates.
I choose the combination - in my country the pattern is x(like a state) - any two numbers - any 3 letters - so i choose for the letters something to describe it - RAW .  [evil]

I know that's why i did so much to the bike with them.
I hope they don't change the prices (so much) in the future.

Awesome prices!  [thumbsup]

I was expecting you to say something like $1000!

I felt the pain in my hip pocket when I first read that post, hence why I actually asked the question. LOL!

For prices like that, I would take it to a shop.  What country is this where labor is included with parts purchase?  I'll ride there and let rorschach show me around while they service my bike for the ride back!

I'm from Europe, Romania.
Yeah and especially for a Ducati...

@ Dirty Duc - will do, no problem  8)

Ok... i little bit of bad luck.
I rode the bike for like 20 mile.
It's amazing after the full service, it's so agile and crisp. Oh my God.  [evil]

After 10 miles the oil pressure light came on and it never went off at iddle, stayed off only with some medium rpm and it fluctuates.
Stopped the bike checked the oil, all there, no leaks.
Started and again the oil pressure light is on again it fluctuated.
Had no option and rode home back on it -middle of nowhere- for 10 more miles and didn't revved it high.

When i bought it no light came on.
So is it possible that i have 10w40 (shell advance ultra 4) and it's too 'thin'? (i don't know what oil was in there when i got it, i will try to find out)
Should i try with a 20w50 like in the manual?

Maybe the sensor?

And for my piece of mind, there shouldn't be any damage to the engine?
Or it's and indication that the bearings are done ?- i don't care about them in the end they are a consumable but i care about the block, rods, crank etc

I won't use it untill spring now because the season is done now here, only bad wheater.

What do you think?
Hope that a 'thicker' oil will do the trick?
Or tear the engine apart in the shop - i called them - he said maybe the oil maybe the bearings - they asked like 65 $ for the bearings and labour off course will be high for this job something like ~230 $.

Kinda bummer but i will find out and fix it..still love the bike.
Thanks.

Was the bike wet, weather very damp, raining or you washed the bike recently?

It is very common for water to get into the connection between the harness and the sensor. When it does it will cause the light to come on.

10w-40 is fine - so with the light on that's an indication of an issue

You may have a bad sensor or a leak.

I had a similar issue where the seal between my generator cover and main case had failed near the clutch slave. Once the bike got hot and the oil thinned then the light would come on at idle. When the bike was cold, and the oil thicker all was fine. If i'd swapped to 20w-50 the light might not have come on, but I still had a leak...

Have a look around and check for leaking fluid. It's not uncommon for a minor oil leak to develop around the two small orings of the clutch push rod. And really really check... oil is very tricky and the wind blows it around. Initially I thought my valve cover was leaking as the whole underside of my case was oiled - so several inches infront of the leak site got oil, not what I would have expected.

Yeah kinda damp wheater.

Regarding the leaks, yes maybe ..it's kinda smuged in the back of the engine.
I will try to look hard and clean it and find if there are any leaks.

Thank you.

LE. Even so with leaks and low pressure, the time i rode it couldn't harm the engine , right ?
