Title: Watch those toes! Post by: Slide Panda on November 12, 2012, 12:07:29 PM My last track day, sub optimal foot to peg placement lead to a couple toe touches. Wasn't OMG I'm so low I scraped peg... no just had my foot too far forward for the amount of lean carried, and even on my Sumo, with all it's clearance I touched boot enough to wobble the bike. The rest of my body position was 'good' enough' and that nothing really eventful happened.
But seeing this today Ducati 848 Crash in Front of Cop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qSPP95zdCQ&feature=share&list=UUvtfT-xYX4Q-jC2Mbsk3OUA#) Sure made me feel good about my OCD level of working on my foot position this weekend. So watch those toes - lest you end up shiny side down Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: jaxduc on November 12, 2012, 02:26:16 PM So does this guy get a ticket for this?
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Speeddog on November 12, 2012, 06:49:57 PM Not sure whether that was a toe drag issue...
At about 1:15 the front just folds. Couldn't see clearly, but it doesn't appear that he got on the brake. But I can testify that finding a botts dot (lane marker) with your toe does smart a bit. Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Triple J on November 13, 2012, 09:28:34 AM That's a weird crash. I think hitting his toe just freaked him out, causing him to move his foot, maybe chop the throttle, and accidentally move the bars? Weird. He didn't hit the brake or anything.
I've touched my toes quite a few times racing, and I tuck my foot pretty tight. It isn't all that big of a deal as long as you don't let it bother you...especially if you have folding pegs. Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Spidey on November 13, 2012, 09:39:00 AM That's a weird crash. I think hitting his toe just freaked him out, causing him to move his foot, maybe chop the throttle, and accidentally move the bars? Weird. He didn't hit the brake or anything. It is weird. I didn't see what he did with the throttle, but it looks like he touches his toe, freaks out and shifts his entire body to the outside of the bike. That weight shift causes the front to fold. In slow motion, it looks like he kinda jumps to the outside of the bike and overtaxes the tire. Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Slide Panda on November 13, 2012, 09:44:56 AM ^ That's my take on it, or similar. But basically the toe touch causes enough upset in him that the bike goes down
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Raux on November 13, 2012, 10:24:58 AM that's why they have sliders on boots. it shouldn't upset your flow.
it looks like he jerked the bars, maybe the cop distracted him. if you think about his line of sight, when he jerked the bars that about when he would have seen the cop car. not blaming the cop, you just get that pucker factor when you see one. Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Slide Panda on November 13, 2012, 10:41:26 AM Doesn't look like he's got sliders.
The boots I was wearing don't either - Sidi Crossfire SuMo boots... Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Triple J on November 13, 2012, 10:46:47 AM The boots I was wearing don't either - Sidi Crossfire SuMo boots... Sure they do...it's called the sole! ;DTitle: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Speeddog on November 13, 2012, 10:50:47 AM When are you seeing his toe drag?
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Slide Panda on November 13, 2012, 10:52:53 AM Sure they do...it's called the sole! ;D Which are remarkably sticky at times... need some of those Garne ones... I think they have hard slider sole sections Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Spidey on November 13, 2012, 11:13:09 AM When are you seeing his toe drag? I thought it was at 1:17, but after watching it a bunch more, it may not be a toe drag. Something causes his body to move up on the bike. Maybe it's a chopped throttle, but it looks like his hand at the same time that his body moves toward the outside of the bike. Edit: I've watched it even more now. His front begins to fold first, not as a result of moving his body across the bike. I can't figure out what caused it. ??? Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: SteveO. on November 13, 2012, 11:32:32 AM To me, it seems like he sees the cop and rolls the throttle forward which causes the bike to twitch and fall. I know that's my natural reaction when i see a cop, just would suck to happen hung out in a corner like that.
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: duccarlos on November 13, 2012, 12:20:57 PM I looked at it in slowmo nd have no clue what caused it. It didn't look like he dragged a toe.
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Slide Panda on November 13, 2012, 12:24:00 PM It might just be that he was as committed as he could handle, spotted the cop, twitched and that put him over the threshold...
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: lazylightnin717 on November 13, 2012, 05:29:13 PM All I saw was him dragging his knee...
In his Levi's Without the bike between his legs Ouch :-X Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: BastrdHK on November 13, 2012, 08:29:46 PM I don't discount the "cop theory", but it looks like he tries to steer the bike.....the wrong way. It could've been the front tucking, but it looks like he gives the wrong input first of trying to steer the bike at the same point we always see people make a correction because the corner tightens. Panic reaction because of the corner tightening, seeing the cop or both, but doesn't get much more embarrassing than that!
I can see the youtube comments now...."Typical Ducati Douche, guy doesn't even try to pick up his own bike...crash valet does it for him" Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Monsterlover on November 17, 2012, 04:13:40 AM Which are remarkably sticky at times... need some of those Garne ones... I think they have hard slider sole sections The crossfire boots are rebuildsble and sidi makes a sumo xfire with a sole slider. That slider will bolt up to the regular dirt version of the xfire... I can see the youtube comments now...."Typical Ducati Douche, guy doesn't even try to pick up his own bike...crash valet does it for him" Yes, he seems to almost flinch jut before, as for picking his bike, most people can barely stand on their legs after an incident(as anyone that has been down can relate), he was also told not to worry about the bike. Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Slide Panda on November 18, 2012, 05:26:28 PM The crossfire boots are rebuildsble and sidi makes a sumo xfire with a sole slider. That slider will bolt up to the regular dirt version of the xfire... Which are the boots I've got. But those soles aren't like plastic sliders, they are still a rubbery compound. Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: polivo on November 19, 2012, 08:40:43 PM Ive looked at this a few times. BEFORE the front tucks, you can see him progressively moving to the opposite side of the bike. As he is doing this, right before he falls, he begins to STEER. He was crossed up on the bike.. counterweighting when he should have been countersteering. Looks like he just overloaded the front.. tuck.. pow.. roll.
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Chucko9-696 on November 21, 2012, 05:24:19 AM I think he came around the corner and saw the cop and panicked
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: militar3rd on December 02, 2012, 10:11:21 PM Man, so many things went wrong there.
Aside from the guy not having proper gear, his body position coming into the corner was horrendous. Arms were as stiff as it can be and the only thing that he was willing to hang out was his pelvis. As he was coming out of the corner he tried adjusting his body position, which at the same time cause his boots to slip from the pegs. The cop coming in his line of sight didn't helped neither. Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: FrankenDuc on December 03, 2012, 04:43:01 AM Lot of people go down right there, there's a dip in the pavement... Watch his front suspension close on the slowmo, you'll see the front chassis sort of fall downward just before the front tire starts to give, as if his fork rebound is maybe set too stiff???. And Militar3rd's right, there's a lot of stuff going on there, stiff body, arched back, appears to totally tense up as the washout occurs, gets crossed up, probably spooked by the five-0 and the rest of the crowd - every accident is a chain of events, take away any one link of the chain and the accident doesn't occur... Feel for him, but glad he's lived to learn from it :)
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: IZ on December 03, 2012, 01:12:48 PM spotted the cop, twitched and that put him over the threshold... Agreed. Got scared after seeing the cop. Does one usually sit there? Hmm..never saw crash valets after I picked up my bike immediately following a highside. Would've been a nice option? [cheeky] Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: Slide Panda on December 03, 2012, 04:48:25 PM There's a big pull off there so lots of folks stop. From the videos it seems a LEO hangs out from time to time. Plenty of zippy cars n bikes going through and some ass-hattery
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: DRKWNG on December 05, 2012, 08:02:07 PM I think he slid on some spilled diesel.
Title: Re: Watch those toes! Post by: sleepyJ on April 08, 2013, 10:23:29 AM those 3 crash valet dude's quite remind me of something...

Ball of the foot on the pegs and tight to the bike, the only time you move it is to shift, and you do that when the bike is being picked up past the apex. Or better yet a quick shifter but you still want the bike to be coming up from lean angle. Rear brake is to steady the suspension on a curvy road.
The sides of my boots are beveled, the feeler gauges on the pegs are gone, that's from track days. On the street the only time things drag is when one of my buddies wants to try the Ducati and I'm on their Harley (I keep forgetting those things can't lean). I have done my share of causing Harley riders to sell their antiques and get a real bike. |
