I recommend lightening a stock one, but folks will have different opinions. http://www.ehow.com/way_6183879_motorcycle-flywheel-removal.html (http://www.ehow.com/way_6183879_motorcycle-flywheel-removal.html) Title: Re: DP Lightweight Flywheel question Post by: lillo on November 15, 2012, 10:15:07 PM its something that I might consider doing myself if possible but I need to find some video or pictorial instructions on how to do it.

Well it's not like changing out a light bulb for sure. :D Title: Re: DP Lightweight Flywheel question Post by: Dirty Duc on November 15, 2012, 11:03:11 PM [thumbsup] i found some guides- does not look very easy to do though... Depends on your definition of easy... ;)Have you changed the clutch on a car or a BMW bike? If you can do that, anything on a Duc is pretty easy and just a matter of torque values and details. Title: Re: DP Lightweight Flywheel question Post by: lillo on November 15, 2012, 11:23:48 PM nope never had any experience with clutch work, but I would like to learn (I love mechanics)- I probably should buy some sort of Ducati DIY manual.

LT Snyder is probably the most approachable DIY publisher. Title: Re: DP Lightweight Flywheel question Post by: herm on November 16, 2012, 06:15:01 AM I recently had a stock flywheel lightened by a member of the board, who did an incredible job. And, because I cant afford to fix big mistakes, I had a Ducati mechanic install it.
I was/am extremely pleased with the changes to the ride. One thing I have found, however, is that my bike will sometimes stall at idle. I think this has something to do with the reduced mass of the flywheel not having enough inertia....and it can be corrected...when I get around to it. Title: Re: DP Lightweight Flywheel question Post by: Raux on November 16, 2012, 06:34:02 AM you have to adjust your idle just a bit higher.
for my 696 stock idle is 1200rpm with the ergal flywheel I have it set at 1300rpm and have no stalling issues. and it's a dream to downshift and match revs [Dolph] Title: Re: DP Lightweight Flywheel question Post by: lillo on November 16, 2012, 09:34:28 AM Well it sounds like you guys are pleased with the results and I definitely like the fact that "it's a dream to downshift and match revs". Since I do not have all the necessary tools to install one and set the idle to 1300rpm I will have to first buy one or like you said Herm have the stock one lightened and then bring it in to the dealer.

Go with a stock / lightened if you can make it happen. Much better bang for your dollar. And, like Raux mentioned, the stalling issue is no big thing to get straightened out (i'm just a little slow/lazy sometimes...) Title: Re: DP Lightweight Flywheel question Post by: lillo on November 16, 2012, 04:54:46 PM good to know! Now I can't wait to get it installed and see how it feels. ;D Will probably get it done sometime during December. Thank for the support guys!
