Title: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on January 05, 2013, 08:30:45 AM Hi All, I'm starting this thread to catalog my adventures this winter as a take a wrench to my 07' 695. I have never wanted to move south until this winter when i was sidelined by the snow and salt/sand.
As my bike sits right now, (http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/289325_10151384980995348_1691222747_o.jpg) Mods already done
These are the mods i would like to accomplish this winter....if you want to see more mods done contribute here (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=61152.0) by buying my old parts. ;D
Further down the road aka when i have more $$$
Oil Cooler I've been wanting to add this since i got stuck in traffic in the white mountains and my temp got 300 F. I've gotten an oil cooler from an M900 and now i just need the diverter spring and some place to mount it to. The boring route is to find a valve cover from a 2V bike and do it that way. Anyone do it another way? Directly to the frame or something? I'm open to ideas and you guys have alot of them!MT-03 Headlight I love this headlight from LSL(http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/148918_10151421832815348_136224870_n.jpg) But from LSL it's $400!!! Not exactly cheap when you are on a budget. So to ebay i went and found this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-MT03-Streetfighter-headlight-style-custom-street-H4-55-60w-bulb-/271129116593?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D4663573853474904804%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D3%26sd%3D261134884950%26) Pretty much the same headlight but for $160 and not from China, double score!! I'll mount it up with some low profile blinkers like in the above photo. Gives it more of a street fighter look and gets rid of the boring circular headlight. 2-1 System Now I've always liked the 2 into 1 system on the 1100EVO with the compwerkes can, so i thought I could do that! A google search later turns up this thread on Ducati.ms (http://www.ducati.ms/forums/57-supersport/81269-my-2-into-1-exhaust-project.html) so now i had actual pictures with what i wanted to do. I'm no expert welder, but my boss is and he is a great guy so he said he would do it. (http://lh4.ggpht.com/_AeVTZyP_i84/S4CZtAobO-I/AAAAAAAAAX0/IXBkQ2yI624/s288/DSCF0186.JPG) ^^^Pic after the cross flow is cut and welded more pics in the link^^^ so now i needed a can to fit to the end of the exhasust. I emailed competition werkes and they will pretty much build you anything you want. I got a quote of $400 for a can similar to the 1100EVO with a smaller ID that would just slip on to my exhuast outlet. But i though i could still do it cheaper and found that their smallest ID is on their can for the R6. (http://www.competitionwerkes.com/siteimages/products/WY607_large.jpg) It's pretty much exactly want i wanted with a smaller inlet(around 1 7/8in) and you can find them online for 200-300$. Score! Now i'm just waiting for my headers to come back and i'll grab a can and mount it up. I'll probably have to fabricate something to mount the can to the frame as i don't like it just hanging off. The weight savings alone are going to be huge, the stock system is 18lbs the comp werkes can is around 4lbs i think. This will also alow me to ditch the stock rearsets and put some ducabikes(only ones out there i think, right?) on. This will clean up the rear ALOT. I'm only slighty worried about how the engine will cope with the new set up, if it doesnt like i'll just have get a new set of headers and go hi mounts or something. Suggestions or tips are appreciated. Shiny side up! Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on January 13, 2013, 06:28:13 PM Did some minor things this weekend. Mostly cleaned up the front sprocket area got rid of the gunk that was caked in there.
Got this in on friday..... (http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/414371_10151435843460348_1954872166_o.jpg) The welds on it are perfect. Now just waiting for the headers. I took a dremal to my sprocket cover for a free mod, came out pretty good. (http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/414309_10151435843180348_723091243_o.jpg) I made my own seat tray a while back. I took it off grinded down the edges and bent the front edge 90deg and attached my license plate. before it was parell with the tray as it was bolted to the old side panel mount. Now its more visible but still sorta hidden. (http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/740961_10151436250415348_791842235_o.jpg) I'm not working in my own garage(Apt living) so i had to do with my grandfathers(hurry for snowbirds). He doesn't have much bench space so i took some carbboard from the ikea desk i just built and "made" this. (http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/616917_10151435843105348_558856416_o.jpg) Best part is i can write on the cardboard and tag the bolts so i remeber where they go. (http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/736392_10151435842975348_701111778_o.jpg) I also pulled this out of the frame hole by the suspension linkage. (http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/740909_10151435842670348_337370146_o.jpg) It's an LED for lighting up your bike, the PO left it on there. Not even Ducs are immune to these mods. Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: Pedro-bot on January 13, 2013, 06:57:12 PM Looking good with that shorty. [thumbsup]
May I suggest some good ear plugs. [evil] Any plans on painting your seat pan black? It would match all the other PC'ing, one thing I think Ducati did well for the 695 model. Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: joshuajcrouch on January 13, 2013, 09:46:00 PM Do work son.
Looks good. Interested in seeing how you mount your new headlight. Are you going to drop the clocks while you are at it? Nice job with the license plate mount. Do you have your plate lit? If not, have you gotten any "attention" for where its mounted? Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on January 14, 2013, 10:09:28 AM Looking good with that shorty. [thumbsup] May I suggest some good ear plugs. [evil] Any plans on painting your seat pan black? It would match all the other PC'ing, one thing I think Ducati did well for the 695 model. I wear ear plugs now, i might get the baffle. I'll judge by how much my ears bleed when i mount and it up and run it. ;D Didn't think about painting the seat pan. I should as it collects grime and dirt as I run with no rear hugger right now. Thanks for the idea. Do work son. Looks good. Interested in seeing how you mount your new headlight. Are you going to drop the clocks while you are at it? Nice job with the license plate mount. Do you have your plate lit? If not, have you gotten any "attention" for where its mounted? I'll see how the headlight looks before i decide if i want to drop the gauges. This plate setup has not been out in the street yet. Before i had bolted to the seat tray with no bend so it was even more hidden and i had no probelms with LEOs. I might cut in my license plate blub into the seat tray. The LED on my intergrated tail light are pretty bright so i'll have to see it at night to make sure it's worth doing it. I should be getting wheel tape, rear sets and tailchop plugs in today ;D ;D Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: Pedro-bot on January 14, 2013, 08:25:53 PM How 'bout mounting the seat pan over the tabs? It may hide the edges of the pan and look a little cleaner too.
Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on January 20, 2013, 01:41:44 PM Did some more work this weekend after getting some parts in.
Finally got some plugs for the tail chop. (http://sphotos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/774359_10151448781600348_1384345774_o.jpg) Red wheel tape, was a PITA to put on. But it really makes the boring brembo 3 spokes pop. (http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/775135_10151448781995348_1045273670_o.jpg) Ducabike rearsets. Huge upgrade over the clunky stock rearsets (http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/775022_10151448782090348_330680972_o.jpg) Still waiting on my headers. The headlight should be in this week. I'll fab the oil cooler mount too this week. It's all starting to come together! Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: Lieutenant Dan on January 20, 2013, 10:49:41 PM Those sure are some expensive rear sets especially considering how much metal you actually get. Though I think I'm discovering that this seems to be the case with any aftermarket rear sets...
I'm interested to see what you do with the oil cooler, as I, too, am looking to do this mod to my '07 695. Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: COP TZR on January 21, 2013, 06:20:20 AM where did you get the inline pressure switch for your rear brake?
Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on January 21, 2013, 07:21:33 AM where did you get the inline pressure switch for your rear brake? It came with the rearsets, ducabike sells one on their website. yoyodyne sells one also i belive Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: Dellikose on January 21, 2013, 07:23:34 AM You mentioned that you removed the crankcase breather...by this, do you mean that you got rid of the black box and plumbing that went to the airbox, and instead have a short hose with a filter?
The problem with that setup is that if it does burp out some oil, it throws it on the rear wheel (assuming that you have the filter there, which most people do). I do agree that it looks a whole better though. It sights right on top of the reed behind the horizontal cylinder above the crankcase. It can throw up oil, but is more likely to seep out of the filter than "burp" on to the rear tire. It can happen, but i'll take my chances with how much it cleans up the rear. Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on January 26, 2013, 04:18:08 PM Minor update....
mocked up the mounting of the oil cooler (http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/523314_10151460249280348_1996310620_n.jpg) (http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/385244_10151460249370348_853067663_n.jpg) I'll take pictures of the final product tomorrow, I need to buy some bolts and bushings. There is a bolt off one of the center cross members of the frame that i used to attach the bracket to. Also painted the seat tray black today. I ordered the wrong bypass spring from pro-Italia. [bang] [bang] So I won't install the oil cooler in till i have the actual bypass thingamajig. My headlight should be coming in from the UK this week. I also need to order some turn signals. I scored a belly pan and seat cowl also, so things are coming together!! Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: ultraXR on January 27, 2013, 12:19:48 AM Excellent way to pass the winter. Also, looks like you're one pair of undies short now since its plugging up the bike. haha

They way the guages stick out soo much causes some clearence issue but i'm i'll think it'll look better once i clean up everything behind it. Got my tygon tubing in for my rear brake so i bled that. Also if you don't have a front stand but have a big a** metal stake you can make one! (http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/775797_10151494136605348_80193835_o.jpg) Cleaned the front wheel and did the rest of the wheel tape.... Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: WayneR on January 31, 2013, 08:16:06 PM Headlight looks good!
How have you attached it? Looks like the stock headlight bracket at the top. Is there anything securing it at the bottom? Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on January 31, 2013, 08:41:43 PM Headlight looks good! How have you attached it? Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: Dellikose on February 01, 2013, 04:30:18 AM I'm going to put some rim tape on this winter and I have the feeling that it's going to end up like yours. ;)

Just buy two so you don't have to pay for shipping twice! Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: joshuajcrouch on February 01, 2013, 10:38:10 AM Really surprised by how good that headlight looks. Can you take another picture of the head light from further away? Interested in seeing how it flows with the rest of the bike. And yeah your clocks look a little out of place now. Not sure there is much you can do about that though...
Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: Novelo on February 01, 2013, 07:50:18 PM I've since powder coated the mounting brackets black so it blends in well. Trying to think up a way to lower the clocks a bit because the light is mounted to high in these pictures.I would like for the arch in the headlight to match the arch in the tank. I fabricated some little extenders that bring the mounting holes for the clocks back about an inch but its still not how I would like it.

I'll try something this weekend. Hopefully it works!
Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: Novelo on February 02, 2013, 09:17:05 AM I used metal hose clamps with the rubber inside to clamp the headlight bracket to the factory u-bracket. It seems to have held up well but as I said would like something which would allow me to lower the headlight more. Thinking of a straight bar with a slot cut in it to allow vertical movement. Then mount it using the clocks mounting holes and modifying the brake line bracket at the bottom or making a plate for a good solid mounting system.
Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on February 02, 2013, 03:15:57 PM Painted the seat tray black.....
(http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/775665_10151498194935348_1188234729_o.jpg) Looks sooo much better, i also cut out some holes for the license plate light. So the Leos need a real reason to pull me over. (http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/812802_10151498195150348_2041844415_o.jpg) On the to-do list....
Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: joshuajcrouch on February 02, 2013, 05:07:46 PM Ok question for you since it looks like you have the same tail light as me... I saw this PDF on the motodynamic website: (http://www.motodynamic.com/installation/d-mst-b-bst.pdf)
The diagram shows the yellow left turn signal wiring and blue right turn signal wiring. Is the right turn signal on the right if you are looking at the front of the bike? Or is the right turn signal the one that turns on when you turn right? I took the diagram literally and assumed the right turn signal was on the left when looking at the rear of the bike. I don't have a battery right now so I cannot check to see if I got it wired correctly. I got my blinkers from competition werkes, cheap, shorter than the originals and are not of the LED varity. I like them. (https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/858247_10151528779510348_1745014363_o.jpg) (https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/860358_10151528801535348_119118683_o.jpg) I've been running with out a rear hugger for most of last season. Looks great but gets the shock and seat tray pretty dirty. I was going to buy a CF shorty hugger but didn't want to spend the cash so i took a dremal to my old crappy stock one and kept trimming till i liked the shape. Before (https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/333665_10151391689630348_525624355_o.jpg) After (https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/860810_10151528800990348_1991636950_o.jpg) I took ALOT off. (https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/859163_10151528801230348_1729135084_o.jpg) It came out pretty good if i don't say so my self. Best of all it was a free mod. Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on February 23, 2013, 02:58:47 PM Got alot of stuff in this week so i was able to do quite a bit of work today.
I found some high mount up pipes on the flea market here(Thanks Spankee!!). I've always liked the high mount exhaust better and i wanted a bit more pipe before i put on my slip on so it worked out perfectly. It also fits the Competition Werkes R6 exhaust perfectly, I was a little worried about my measurements. Trial fitment of the slip on (https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/860203_10151540150000348_1645110661_o.jpg) Cleaned them with a scotchbrite pad and WD40. It came out ok, i should have striped it and sanded it better. Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on March 01, 2013, 05:19:20 AM Took the rear header pipe off last night. It can be done without removing the shock or the ride height link, it just gets a little tight in there. Cleaned it with a scotch pad and WD40, I'll take a metal wire brush to it as it still looks pretty dirty. I also took off my belt cover and painted them a gloss black as they were sticking out in a bad way next to the gloss black clutch cover. My header should be finished in a week or two, finally. Then i can really start doing the final prep before riding season starts.

I noticed you rerouted your wires. Did you cut up most of the bundles and solder to length or just hid it through the frame? I'm looking to do it sometime jsut wondering what kind of mess I may get myself into. Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on March 13, 2013, 03:30:31 AM Any specific wires? I've been moving most of them around as i go through the bike and re routing them to places that makes more sense/out of sight. I have to get my tank replaced so i'll wait till after that to zip tie most everything down.

Done! I fitted the compwerkes slipon and it was WAY to loud. Looked good but i live in an apartment so that would not have gone over well when i ride to work at 6:30am. So i did a little searching and found this leovince slipon for $200 for an R6, slipped right on to the high mount pipe like it was factory fit. My only complaint about this is that it's a little longer than the compwerkes one and doesn't end with the tail of the bike. (https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/902472_10151598195625348_1420941161_o.jpg) I hung the exhaust off the the passenger grab handles with some extra rubber and steel i had hanging around. Cheap and easy. I need to add some exhaust wrap to the up pipe as with the ducabike rearsets they run closer so the foot pegs. The heel slider on my right sidi boot has a nice burn hole in it now. You can make out the black part on the exhaust in the first picture. As for how the bike ran with the 2-1 system, about the same from the seat of my pants dyno. My first test ride was a little hairy as i set the shifter too far forward, thus making me lift my boot up off the peg to shift up. The second test ride was weird, on the way back the bike would stutter at round 4k rpm and then died shorty after. I pulled over looked over all my fuel connections and everything seemed fine, tried to start but it wouldn't. I then lifted the tank and checked underneath found nothing. This time it started and seemed to run fine. I think i ran out of gas, my low fuel idiot light must have gone bad. As i went out the next day with a gallon of the good stuff and it ran well and then rode it all the way to the gas station with no problems. I'm going to put the DP ecu in it with the MWR filter most likely, when i have some extra cash. After that i'm going to get the suspension set up for my fat ass(should have done this first but you know how it goes). Then it might be done............might. This sounds suspiciously like what happened to me, which turned out to be a bad fuel flange bulkhead wire assembly.http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=60239 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=60239) http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=61306 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=61306) Title: Re: Winter Mods to fight off boredom/ 695 Project Post by: JohnEE on April 16, 2013, 11:29:13 AM I'm super curious about how you did the 2-1 and how it's running. Basiclly cut down the crossover piece and weld. I have since take off the up pipe and went low mount. There was too much back pressure generated by not opening up the diameter, so i went low mount where it opens up much faster. I opened my airbox and flashed my ECU to DP Spec. It's running alright, not great. I need to sync the FI to get it to run better, will be doing that this weekend. I'll report back with details/pictures. It's been running fine ever since( about 300 miles). And the gas light is working now. It was weird, but hasn't appeared again(*knock on wood*). Yeah, well you are essentially doing what I was going to do, up until you scrapped the comp werkes (I want a baffled version because of the noise too). |
