Title: Drama Unfolding in My Backyard...MORE PICS
Post by: jdubbs32584 on July 03, 2008, 07:48:17 AM
Bunny, hiding in a hole. He's kinda hard to see in this pic so he's obviously doing a good job. You can kinda see his fur.

Do I save Mr. Bunny somehow or let things play out?  [popcorn]

Let us know what happens.

The hawks were actually much closer. Our back deck is a story off the ground and has steps down the within a foot of where Mr. Bunny is hiding. I walked outside and Hawk #2 was sitting on the deck railing not five feet from me. He took off and thats when I got the in flight pic.

That's pretty cool! [popcorn] I'd let it play out...saving the rabbit just starves the hawks.  There is no shortage of rabbits anyhow.  Hard not to feel bad for the poor bastard though.

Yeah, imagine sitting in that hole knowing there are two things hunting you and chances are you aren't going to make it.

We (as humans) should introduce more wild animals into urban areas. I think we'd all be a little better off physically and mentally knowing that walking to the mail box might include running from the bear, lion, aligator, <insert other man eating animal here> that is chasing your fat ass back up the driveway.

Probably solve our obesity problem too -- all of us having to stay at peak physical performance, or die.

Mr. Bunny is pretty wiley. He's been around for at least two months and is quick and smart enough to elude my two dogs (not saying much but its something).

The hawks have to eat too, right?  I'd probably feel horrible but I'd let things play out without interference.  Mr. Bunny may be more wiley than we give him credit for...survival of the fittest right?

Things have quieted down. Mr. Bunny has moved from the hole to a 50ft by 50ft natural area with a lot of cover. Thats his usual home. The hawk family is flying around the area. They've got a nice big territory here with TONS of woods and such. They've even swooped down at one of my dogs once. I think they're Cooper's hawks but I'm not sure. Its kinda weird when they start calling to each other.

I'll get some more pics when they come back.

I live in Charlotte NC in an old neighborhood that has tons of big trees. Its not forest, but its pretty good for suburban Charlotte.

Here's down the steps from the deck, bunny hides in the natural areas on the top left too:

I am seeing more birds of prey in my neighborhood also.  I imagine less natural habitat and more damn rabbits are to blame.  The rabbits can really destroy a landscape quickly, thus my need for a pellet gun...

Mr. Bunny  ?

So, this rabbit is like, all by himself?  Sort of the bunny version of Jeremiah Johnson?  There are no other bunnies?  Nah.  No way.  I think you've been bamboozled.  I think there is a whole bunch of 'Mr. Bunnies'.  They just dress up in disguise to look like one "Mr. Bunny" to fool use humans & other predators.  I'm pretty sure they've got interchangeable outfits, just to keep us guessing.  Heck, those cotton tails swap out just like our Ducati seat fairings.

Given we know there is definitely Mr. Bunny, so for sure there's gotta be Mrs. Bunny, too.  Let me tell you, bunnies are never fervent adherents to abstinence.  And believe me, I know my bunnies.  Been a bunny owner, a bunny afficianodo.  During my dark period after Vietnam, alas, sadly I was also a Bunny hunter.  But, I've repented since, and have grown to love Bunnies.  Sort of a convert, you might say, to their way of life:  eat, sleep, play, and make little bunnies.

Likely there's also Mr. Bunny's three bro's, Flop, Mop and Cotton.  They're always hangin' around drinking chamomile or something.  Up to no good, usually.  Watch out for them.

See ya.  Gotta go take my meds now . . .

Would it be wrong if I said that you should thank teh hawks for alerting you to such a tasty meal then go ahead and shoot the bunny yourself. So very very tasty the wild ones are.

Yeah. That would be wrong. Don't do that. Let nature take its course. On second thought, we are animals as well. Hooray for being at the top of teh food chain! Eat the bunny!

Ladies and Gents. I have been fooled all along. Just as Johnny Ducati said, they've multiplied.
I present to you
Baby Bunneh:

This little make the beast with two backser was almost munched on by my brilliant dog. Luckily, my dog is an idiot and was trying to decide if it was a toy or a meal when I saw what she was looking at. Being a good, obediant pregnant dog, she froze when I told her "No! Leave it!". Baby Bunneh was understandably scared and froze as well. The other mutt, the old one, was cluelessly dragging her butt several feet away.

The obedient one twitched and refocused about a foot away from Baby Bunneh. Lo! Baby Bunneh 2 was found. I grabbed obedient one by the scruff in one hand and Baby Bunneh 1 by the scruff in the other. Apparently Baby Bunnehs scream. Just so you know. Baby Bunneh 2 hopped up by the side of the house into some deeper shrubs.

I lift Baby Bunneh 1 above the reach of the mutts, who are now completely focused on this little bundle of joy dangling from my hand. The dogs follow me back up the stairs and I lock them in the house and put Baby Bunneh 1 in a grocery bag. After searching for about 10 minutes for Baby Bunneh 2, I give up. I believe Mr. Bunny came along and picked him up cause I turned around and saw this:

This, my friends, is the real Mr. Bunny. I think he's hiding Baby Bunnehs in my little natural area where I found them. Not a good idea. I decided to intervene the way I did cause I really didn't want to see my mutts try to kill a baby bunneh. They wouldn't do a good job and I think suffering would occur. So don't give me shit about it.

I'll go back out in just a little bit to make sure Baby Bunneh 2 is ok.

Oh, Baby Bunneh 1 was let loose into the natural area you see in Mr. Bunny's picture.

I cant BELIEVE YOU, How can you keep the poor hawks from eating?  (This is, of course, a joke).

Are you indifferent as to rather or not letting nature take its course? Or are you trying to save the bunnies.  I have bunnies around my house as well.  Sadly, no one believed me until I fished a dead one out of my pool.

I could care less if the hawks get any of them. The hawks need to eat. As do other wild animals.

My dogs, on the other hand, are fed by me. They aren't wild. And they wouldn't do a good job killing it. They obviously still have their instincts (except maybe the butt dragger) but I've seen them with other wild animals. They can't kill worth shit.

Thats the reason why I stepped in. I just moved them to a spot where my dogs won't go after them. They're still available food for the hawks.

Thats why I went for the scruff. Figured it worked on my ex's crazy pregnant dog of a cat, it might work on bunnehs too. make the beast with two backser was makin a lot of noise and managed to get his hind feet up behind his ears (wish I could do that  ;) ) but wasn't able to get to me.

his neighbor recently graduated from the breed and release bunny school for complete morons.
frikkin rabbits everywhere

Did that guy used to live up here in Stumptown?  There's a little park down the road that has hordes of funny-lookin' bunnies.  You know, the kind with big droopy ears (Belgian?), black-&-white panda colored bunnies, giant bunnies, miniature bunnies, wierd hybrid bunnies made from wild ones and domestic ones.  It's obvious someone was really sloppy with their pets.

They're also invading the adjacent neighborhood.

It's like the bunny Area 51.

but it's pink?
seconded.
maybe it's a furry party that leaked out of the hotel room.

i almost ran over bunnies on my bicycle ride. they kept running in front of me.
i got really freaked out when a groundhog stopped in the middle of the path and just looked at me, then turned around in the path i was taking to avoid him. i'm fairly certain i would not have faired well had i hit him or the bunnies. i'm carrying a hawk with me next time. he shall be well fed.
