Title: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: memper on July 23, 2013, 11:57:33 AM Wondering if I can get a 1000 motor in my 750 frame or am I stuck with only 900's as an option?
Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: ducatiz on July 23, 2013, 12:16:26 PM None. Last carbed models were 900s.
All the 1000 air cooled models are DS1000 and EFI only. You can up the displacement with overbore piston/cylinders to 944 easily. Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: memper on July 23, 2013, 12:24:57 PM Ahhh, too bad.
Thanks Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Why not a 1000 with flatslides and an ignitech?...and this is a mod thread... off it goes. Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: ducatiz on July 23, 2013, 01:12:00 PM You can do that with a 1000 but you have to change the flywheel and some other stuff at the least.

The ignitech won't read off the timing sensor?Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: Dirty Duc on July 23, 2013, 01:17:21 PM The ignitech won't read off the timing sensor? Even if the ignitech won't, there are options. The real question is why stay carbed? Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: Speeddog on July 23, 2013, 01:51:52 PM ~~~SNIP~~~ The real question is why stay carbed? 'Cause he's got carbie tank, carbie wiring harness, etc, etc? Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: memper on July 23, 2013, 02:44:24 PM Cuz FI dont go clacky-clacky.
Wiring is much easier. Dont like the idea of software tuning my bike for me. Just doesnt seem right. I am jyst doing research and asking dumb questions. In no way am I doing this mod anytime soon. Doesnt need to be in mods IMO. Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: Dirty Duc on July 23, 2013, 02:51:42 PM I thought all the big engines went clacky-clacky with the exception of the later GTs and the EVO...

I'm talking about FCR's man..Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: ducatiz on July 24, 2013, 06:32:40 AM The ignitech won't read off the timing sensor? My understanding is that the FI flywheels are different from the carbed ones. Someone here has done the conversion and the flywheel was one of the issues, iirc. Someone here has done the conversion and the flywheel was one of the issues, iirc. They are indeed different, but the fi bike uses a sensor that reads off the idler gear.I would think the ignitech could read off that sensor. I'm probably wrong. You have to have the correct harness for the ignitech Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: memper on July 28, 2013, 06:27:46 PM Yes it will. You have to have the correct harness for the ignitech That would make sense. Seems like an easier mod would be 900-944 overbore with a lighter flywheel. Seems like an easier mod would be 900-944 overbore with a lighter flywheel. Yeah it would be easier punching out the 900. Dual swingarm 1000ds motors with dry clutches aren't the easiest/cheapest things to find. Title: Re: What 1000cc models were air cooled and carbd? Post by: koko64 on July 29, 2013, 12:00:54 AM I have often thought about what I would do if I lived in the US.
I would approach someone like Bruce Meyers, or someone who can do the work, I would get some heads, long manifolds, big 45/40 valves from CCW, some 900ie or ST2 cams, and send them to him. I would ask him to change the valve angle to fit the big valves and port the heads and match port the long manifolds. I know short manifolds make more power, but I wouldnt want to cut and relocate frame struts on a Monster. While he is working on them, I would add hi comp or big bore hi comp pistons, bigger airbox, etc. I have most of these mods now and have thought about this alot. So instead of changing motors you could buy big barrels and pistons and hotrod heads which bolt on. You could estimate what you would spend to buy a 1000DS engine, minus selling the 900 donk, and make that your budget. Anyone got a rough estimate on that? |
