Title: Garages Post by: ChrisK on July 31, 2013, 07:07:18 AM Thought it would be cool to see a thread with pics of everyone's garage setups. From full blown professional garages, to carports, to driveways, I think it would just be cool to see what everyone's working with. I know there's a thread for the world's best garages, but I thought it would be cool to see where some of us do our own thing.
I bought my house back in February and am so happy with the garage. The lady that owned the house before me was a bit whacky and owned a stained glass business so she thought it would be a good idea to paint all the walls crazy colors - so ignore those lol. When I have the money and time I plan to paint the walls white, and epoxy seal the floor. Anywho, view from the outside: (http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/chriskuecker/SVAR117851H_zps86818c2b.jpg) (http://s842.photobucket.com/user/chriskuecker/media/SVAR117851H_zps86818c2b.jpg.html) Here's my workspace, with my Monster coming back together after the crash a while ago: (http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/chriskuecker/99EFBEAF-5C8C-4327-985A-87F26B7C2E1E-1568-000002013A3BC543_zps3c35f14e.jpg) (http://s842.photobucket.com/user/chriskuecker/media/99EFBEAF-5C8C-4327-985A-87F26B7C2E1E-1568-000002013A3BC543_zps3c35f14e.jpg.html) Inside the workspace, looking out into the rest of the garage: (http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/chriskuecker/7E2FCFCC-F1EA-4BD0-B03B-9CB427D45E4F-1568-000002014228B147_zps52f3a26e.jpg) (http://s842.photobucket.com/user/chriskuecker/media/7E2FCFCC-F1EA-4BD0-B03B-9CB427D45E4F-1568-000002014228B147_zps52f3a26e.jpg.html) Front left corner, looking in: (http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/chriskuecker/E4342A40-B59F-4840-9787-EE9C05F6376E-1568-0000020147B74CE3_zpsd41c633e.jpg) (http://s842.photobucket.com/user/chriskuecker/media/E4342A40-B59F-4840-9787-EE9C05F6376E-1568-0000020147B74CE3_zpsd41c633e.jpg.html) Back right corner: (http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/chriskuecker/ADE83C16-1688-44C2-9949-56CD77CEC05B-1568-000002014D00A7CA_zpsa355aac7.jpg) (http://s842.photobucket.com/user/chriskuecker/media/ADE83C16-1688-44C2-9949-56CD77CEC05B-1568-000002014D00A7CA_zpsa355aac7.jpg.html) Title: Re: Garages Post by: Lucumon on July 31, 2013, 07:31:09 AM I sent this to my wife as we are house shopping as my only requirement.

I was just going on the realty websites, doing an "advanced search" and entering my city, max price, and minimum 3 car garage. From this past weekend...bike is on the stand to the right. I refuse to buy a house without a garage(soon hopefully). I've never had one where ever I've lived. Over the winter i kept my bike at my grandfathers garage and it was godsend to able to work on it(even in the NE winter in a non insulated garage.) I have to many moto projects floating around in my head to NOT have one, ;D . Title: Re: Garages Post by: ManOrAstro-Man? on August 01, 2013, 07:25:44 PM Wow, so far 3 different garages, but all nice in their own way.
Questions: ChrisK: Where do you live? Your garage looks like a barn, but it's huge. What's on the second level? Bobspapa: What's the bike with the sidecar? The attic is just an open space, I have some big "man-cave" plans for the future up there but right now we just use it as storage and I have a make-shift paint booth set up up there. Love this thread and I have been lurking on the garage journal. Please help. Thanks, bdub You should consult local codes to find out setback. Most R1 zoning around the country requires at least 15' of setback for any structure over 10x10. I have 10 bikes and a 2 car garage and a shitload of nos and used parts. That is not enough space. The workshop I am building is 12x16 which will allow me to move most of the parts out and the bikes that I am working on or building.. That works out to essentially a third garage (with 10ft ceiling) and will probably be just enough space for me. Some of my bikes are very long term projects. The 77 GTL I have (which was my second bike) still runs but needs to be restored, but I'm not doing it any time soon (while I collect NOS parts for it). I have a total of 4 non running bikes that will be moved to the workshop for either storage or workspace. I'd like to make it larger, but the space I have for it won't permit it. I converted the back addition to our house into a bike garage. I took the standard door out and put a 42" door in (still have some framing to do). It's nothing special, but it works for us.
Yesterday I used "Herculiner" to cover the floor. The stuff is solid but went on very blotchy, as you can see in the pictures. Wifey won't allow bikes in the living space... but I am building a sort of garage-mahal. I'm getting the floor polished in my 2400 sqft garage this week (provided the contractor actually gets his concrete guy out to our place). It's 24x96 ft. It has two garage doors on each end (one 10' and one 8' on each end). I have a bench along about half of one of the long walls. In the middle of the opposite wall there is a large rollup door leading to "The Barn" (a multi-purpose space that's roughly 84'x48'). Electrical was done to my spec... 4 different circuits for 120V outlets, 20A per circuit. I also have the outlets staggered so if you're using two adjacent outlets, they're on separate circuits. Easier to not overload a single breaker that way. They're also labeled so you know how much you're putting on each circuit. I also have a 240V drop for a vehicle lift, a 240V drop for a welder, a 240V drop for an air compressor, and a "spare" 240V single-phase for an unspecified future machine tool. There is a row of windows on the bench wall, for lots of natural light. The garage doors on each end trigger twin-T5 fluorescent overheads... because in that cavern, the dinky little garage door bulbs are pitiful when it's dark outside. There are 8 or 10 twin-T5 fluorescent fixtures out over the main work area (I forgot if there are 4 or 5 pairs). There is a row of twin-T5 fixtures over the workbench, on staggered switches... you can turn half or all of them on, and they alternate (you're basically changing intensity, not which half the workbench is lit up). Anyway... it's very well-lit. I'm budgeting for a Challenger CL10V3 lift. That'll be the main attraction. ;) Being way out in the sticks, it's a pain to take the vehicles to the dealer for work/maintenance, so I do most of it myself. It's insulated, but we're also having a wood stove installed shortly after the floor gets polished. I'll have to post some pics after the floor gets done and I can start moving my crap in and really organizing it. I've been living off random tools laid out on the bench for almost a year now... driving me crazy. Can't wait to start getting things organized and officially put in their places. Mine is 10ft and I wish I had a bit more. I finally extracted the old Jeep from the spot it has rested for 18 years the other weekend, just some debris cleanup and bracing for the good roof in the front and the new wall can get done on mine. Here's the Jeep when I first was able to make it roll and now in its new spot for at least a little while. Having real thoughts of making it run again. Would love to claim credit, but honestly it's mostly due to other folks' generosity. It's my in-laws' land and my father-in-law built the structure. Thankfully I got some input before it was built, because the original garage plan had 2 light fixtures, 4 outlets, and no 240V drops for big stuff. With the extensive revisions I made (and he approved), we now have a much more functional work space. Of course it's fantastic to have storage room for our cars, my motorcycle, and his tractors.
The whole building is 108' x 96'. It's split between living space, "barn", and garage. It looks like a giant barn from the outside, with three sections. Tall middle section, and two outboard sections. Will have to find another way to post pics, because Photobucket keeps knocking up against my bandwidth limit, and I refuse to pay them for "premium". There are some pics I've posted elsewhere, like the unofficial post-a-pic thread. Those curious could try copying the links to view the pics directly. As far as the roofline... since the garage is in an outboard section of the building, it has a sloped roof. It goes from 14' on the east wall down to 8-8.5' on the west wall. I will have to notch the drywall in the middle of the garage ceiling to clear the 12' top of the Challenger lift, but the roof trusses are 18" tall, so it won't be a problem. At the outermost point of the lift footprint, I have 11'6" from floor to sheetrock ceiling, so there is more than enough space in the roof space for the 6" of clearance I need to add. Oh, and of course... local and travelling fellow Ducatisti/motorcyclists are welcome to visit. [beer] Give me some heads-up, and I'll make sure there's a variety of beer on hand... or we can go to Hood River and avail ourselves to the local breweries. Maybe someday I can convince my wife to let us host a "DIMBY - West Coast". Barring the mile of gravel, there are some epic motorcycle roads around here. (Note: The 1 mile of gravel is to the nearest pavement... my route to work takes me the opposite direction, down 5 miles of gravel. If I went the 1-mile gravel way to work, it's an additional 15-20 miles of pavement, adding ~20 min to my commute time) Title: Re: Garages Post by: duc_fan on September 05, 2013, 11:27:27 AM W00t! The concrete guy is here and the floor is getting polished today! ;D
Hey all, I'm looking for ideas for a paint scheme. Lots of white sheetrock right now. I'm thinking something simple, like a checkered flag band, a little above waist high. Maybe with red stripes to border it above and below. Don't want to blow a bunch of money on paint, so I'm not planning to paint the large surfaces, just add some trim to make it a little more official. Then I have some wood and tin signs and a bunch of car, moto, and airplane posters to hang. Also have a beer bottle collection that I'm gonna make some narrow shelves for, up high (visible, but out of the way). [thumbsup] not my top priority but after extracting it from that previously dark corner (when there was still a wall and roof in place) and actually really looking it over again for the first time in a really long time, I recalled that I liked it and it looked mean as hell. It does deserve to live again. Top priority out there is building the wall, new roof and building out that spot as a motorcycle specific shop. Then I think the old Jeep needs the next bit of attention. Sometime following that will be the more expensive resurrection, the Chevelle.Title: Re: Garages Post by: duc_fan on September 19, 2013, 05:03:05 PM Garage floor was polished a week or two ago...

That's why these are links instead of embedded pics... those who want to can look, those who don't can ignore. Anyway... also had a wood stove installed today. It would be on the left in the pics above, about 3 feet off the end of the workbench. No pics of that yet. Next item is to get the vinyl baseboard installed to clean up the bottom edge. The clean edge will help me detect if rodents or bugs are trying to get in and out through the gaps under the drywall. Then I'd like to paint my checkered-flag border around the walls before bringing the shelves back in. On the Sky: I wish. It was wifey's car before we were married... so it's the 2.4L N/A with a slushbox. :-\ Great color combo though: midnight blue metallic with tan top and tan/black interior. I showed her the Wade's Garage LS swaps, now she's totally onboard with doing an LS7 swap... and she'll even let me change it to a manual. [evil] If we never get the savings together for the LS7, I can probably convince her to let me swap it for the same car, same color, with a manual. Or a redline in the same color, with a manual. We're both really attached to the color combo. Like this one: http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=354449410&listingIndex=13 (http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=354449410&listingIndex=13) It handles really well, now that I've had the alignment done for autocross/motorsport and gotten rid of the crappy OEM Goodyears. The stock setup + Eagle RA1s resulted in a total lack of grip and boring understeer. Now, with the traction control "off" or in "competitive mode" it tends to slide all fours at once in a very progressive manner. Lots of fun! One of these days I'll teach myself how to make the tail wag. I could opt for a Stage 2 or 3 turbo kit for the 2.4 that would boost it to about 375 BHP, but I'm thinking with the stock slushbox that'd be kinda pointless. It's supposed to be a fun little corner-carving roadster... first order of business is to maximize the fun with a proper clutch and stick. There are plans that will make the layout of all this finally make sense. The reason why it is there to begin with is because the original garage was a 20x40 and that was an exterior wall. Then in the 50's or 60's the guy added the wall I just replaced to have the 10x40 section on the side and walls in the front to add a 30x30 in front to make the total 30x70. I'm going to keep with those each being distinctly different sections and actually add a bit of a wall with a rollup door to further separate the 10x40 from the rest of the garage. That will be a bike specific shop. Going to add a ceiling and insulate it as well. Next major step is to shingle the roof in the spring and save up to pour some floors. Sheds in Newfoundland have a cultural significance as a place men meet, drink, bullshit about, and occasionally work on their vehicles...and where women are not expressly forbidden to enter but nonetheless are rarely seen. Oh wait. That's everywhere.
Some of the sheds in this thread are pimped, some could use a little pimpin. Title: Re: Garages Post by: ChrisK on November 28, 2013, 08:37:34 AM Forgot I started this thread! I didn't worry about overspray on the floor because I plan on stripping all that paint up and doing an epoxy floor.
Also, the biggest news is that I installed a natural gas heater. The thing is awesome. Gonna be so nice to comfortably get work done this winter. Yeah that's what people have been telling me, about the moisture. I opted for an 80,000 btu model because the ground floor is fairly big plus I have a full attic that i have some exercise equipment in so I'd like to have the option to keep that warm as well. When I don't want it heated I have a piece of insulating board sealing up the hole. When I want it warm the board hinges up to allow heat to rise up there.

Oh wait. That's everywhere. I am not sure if I have ever met someone from Newfoundland ... and based on the above I don't know if I want to [roll]. Perhaps it is a cultural thing ;). It would be immodest for me to comment on the men ... but our women are obviously a class above down here. My wife allows me in her shed whenever I want (she does set some standards though). A lot of square footage is awesome, at least until you have to gather up money to do this stuff. I'm doing everything I can as cash so it takes awhile. Title: Re: Garages Post by: Southpaw on January 29, 2014, 08:01:11 AM Paint and epoxy the floor and that will seem much larger. Easier to clean too. Title: Re: Garages Post by: fastwin on January 29, 2014, 09:20:55 AM Epoxy floors are awesome! Had that at the old shop. Oil just wipes right up. ^ What he said. I've said this before but it still breaks my heart. When we bought our house in 2005 before there was anything in the garage I had high intensity overhead 8' light strips put in and had the floor epoxy painted a light gray. The floor paint guy did a great job of prepping. Acid wash, filled in every single tiny crack in the cement, etc. Two (maybe 3... can't remember) coats of paint over several days and I never walked on it for at least 5 days. Damn, it looked like a hospital operating room with the lights on. No shadows on anything. Beautiful... Until two years later when we had a terrible drought and no matter how much I watered the foundation of the house every single crack in the garage floor came back with a vengeance! Even bigger than they were. All the paint chipped up along every crack until the whole floor looked like it was suffering the worse case of varicose veins in the universe. I still feel like crying every time I look at it. Still, without those problems I would do it again in a second. [thumbsup] I went back and forth over garage type tile floor vs. epoxy and I'd go with the paint everytime. I've seen DIY kits at Home Depot made by name brand companies. I'd try that if I had to do it again in another garage. Title: Re: Garages Post by: ChrisK on January 30, 2014, 08:42:26 AM Anybody else have some pictures of their motorcycles' bedrooms? Also where do I look for chain hoist tracks? The one I grew up with was a huge peice of I beam. There has to be something smaller. It's only a 1/2 ton hoist I don't feel there is any issue with the tracks overhead. I think unless you have a ton of room, a sliding door would be more cumbersome. There are also side mount openers that allow you to keep the ceiling clear for your hoist. http://www.liftmaster.com/lmcv2/productfamily/53/wall-mount-garage-door-openers/ (http://www.liftmaster.com/lmcv2/productfamily/53/wall-mount-garage-door-openers/) Title: Re: Garages Post by: freeclimbmtb on March 03, 2014, 11:45:39 AM Those are cool. There has to be something smaller. It's only a 1/2 ton hoist All depends on your situation I guess. My garage ceiling height is just a little low so I actually had to cut the vertical section of track down by about 3/4 of an inch (to in effect drop the rest of the track enough for the door to clear the opener.) My father put a piece of wideflange in the house as the header for the garage door and the carport on the side. We always used that to lift from. Sold my house on 2/28, with it's not quite big enough for us and our toys, 2 car garage. Now I live in an apartment, with no garage at all. In about 6 months, we will move into to the new house that is about to start being built, and it's (hopefully) enough room for everything, and then some, 4 car garage. 3 bays wide, the center bay being a tandem 2 deep bay. I will share pics during construction, if anyone's interested. ;) BC. Title: Re: Garages Post by: ChrisK on March 12, 2014, 01:47:16 PM Definitely, congrats on the house man!

all my map bikes are oil/tires all day everyday no problems, start every time and never break. i obviously love italian bikes and have , and had, quite a few, but like i said i wouldn't even dream of owning only one bike and it be an italian bike hahaha, i love riding too much to wait for some stupid sht (and its always stupid) to be fixed. just this year on my s2r: key/immobilizer antenna got moved down somehow, bike wouldn't start, took forever to diagnose. cluster stopped working, stupid sht again. turn on high beams, all idiot lights come on....695, open gas tank, fuel pump wire rips off. it goes on and on and on. i actually sort of kind of enjoy messing with this, but if i had to mess with this on a nice saturday afternoon and couldn't go for a ride, i don't know what i would do, but i just turn the key and ride the zx14 and its all good. so if you call that shoul, maybe they got no soul :) Title: Re: Garages Post by: Stabel1 on November 04, 2014, 01:34:01 PM I came from Kawasaki and agree...started every time, sold it with 85000km, engine wasn´t opened once.
