seems to only happen at lower speeds (1st, 2nd gear), today it's happened like 5 times... clutch pulled in, blipping throttle, the same as I've always ridden. then when trying to restart it's like the starter doesn't want to turn it over unless I mash the throttle while holding start. help please! throttle? tb synch? TPS?
so, to be clear: it goes clutch in --> press shift lever (to 2nd, or 1st) --> stall
2011 hym796, all stock, if that helps any.
Does it try to turn over? You hear the clicking noise each time you hit the start button?
What about the choke?
I have the same issue with my SuperSport 900ie (not the downshift though), but it's hard to start unless I have the full choke and blip the throttle a bit.
it'll just barely start up, then stall.
no choke/fast idle on the bike
I think with the 1100 the TPS resets each time you start the bike (no throttle input otherwise buggers up the calibration) but to do a hard reset you cycle key on start welcome screen key off 3 times. If anyone knows whether the 796 does the same that would be a quick check to start.

yeah, it works the same way (no fiddling during the.. boot? of the dash). not sure on the hard reset thing, but I guess it's worth a shot
How many miles?
Valve job performed?
Belts replaced?
How long has it been stopped?
This happened to a customer's M796 same year . . . if your idle is not 1250RPM +/- 50 then your stepper motor can be faulty; if it's too much for you, to reach the battery and do a reset, then take it to the dealer or a tech with a diag tool . . .

It's a Continental/Siemens[VDO] so, try this procedure, if you still have the issues, then take it to dealer

5300 miles, no service outside of the 600. bike sat for several long stretches. I rode on it last week and it was fine the whole way, all this started today.
i'll try the 3xstart thing and get back to y'all
OK
I may be confusing posts but I think some on the forum with a m796 had a similar issue! The stepper motor rings a bell! Could be entirely wrong mind you! ???
did the reset thing, bike started, idle looked ok. turned it off, went inside to gear up for a shakedown, now the bike will just barely start, sputter, and die.
tried in gear, in N, kickstand up, nothing.

perform the reset again, keep your gear ON . .. once it starts, wait a minute or two, change dash to voltage while listening for idle RPM . . . voltage should be around 12.8V~13.2V, if less, there might lay your issue . . .
reset, still nothing. I can still start it by mashing on the throttle, then idle holds steady at ~1200, BAT shows 13.5
[roll]
so, will only start IF you wack open the throttle?
don't have access to manual from home . . . do you have spark plug socket? take them out and describe colour, please
yeah, but the stupid thing was it started right up fine this morning, then fine when I left to the dr., then fine when I left the dr. all the stalling was happening in between and now now.
will look for plug tool
:o
black, lightly sooty... underneath it was dark grey
that might be the issue . . . too rich . . . this one, correct?

Replace them . . .

yeah, the OE NGKs
but how does it solve my original problem of the bike randomly stalling during downshifts? ???
:edit: your pic doesn't show my plug, it's only got a single on it
It won't.
that's the one the DCS parts catalog shows for this engine . . .
oh well. idk what to say about that.
I guess it's time to call the dealer and see if they can pick it up
:edit: plug on the bike is DCPR8E
ime stalling on the overrun is due to richness. the mv 4 cylinder models were really bad for it, and the fix was to lean the idle mixture out using the trimmer until they stopped. we used 3% co, not 5% on everything but the first 750 f4 pretty much.
but if this 796 is running a std or dp ecu, it should be closed loop so theoretically can't be too rich. maybe it has an o2 sensor fault?
std ECU (bike is stock). wouldn't that (o2 sensor) throw a CEL?
:edit: for parens
not a real update yet, but at least it's going to the dealer tomorrow. so we'll see what's up...
Any news? [popcorn]
just got the callback... there was something clogging a line in/near the MAF (or something like that, that was causing a pressure problem internally) so all they have to do is clear it out.
go pick it up and ride it !!!

going to pick it up tomorrow so I can get my safety check done while it's there.... otherwise it'll be gtg
you should get this, http://www.vizi-tec.com/duc-ee/ (http://www.vizi-tec.com/duc-ee/)
I've installed it in 2 bikes, one Multi 1200 and one HM1100 . . . difference felt at idle, more "sedate" and during accel . . .
I thought the 796 didn't have that valve...?
I had one, 796 that had it . . . guy doesn't want to take it out thought
idr seeing one on my bike
Cool. [thumbsup]
yep
"passageways to map sensors clogged"
was what they came up with

??? ???
what was clogging them?
sean didn't say...
Still running fine with no issues?
was gonna ride it to work tomorrow, but the storm front is still hanging around. I don't mind wet riding, but flash flooding is something I'd like to avoid if possible
