How much wear is acceptable on the clutch housing? What difference does the wear make to the clutch performance?
I've photographed the worst of the wear:

Replace.
But that's *me* spending *your* money.
The wear makes it noisy and grabby/draggy.
You can spend the time to file or grind them flat again.
And then it'll just be noisy.

I've dome that several times to my STM slipper clutch basket. It still works, but is now rated the noicest clutch anyone ever heard [roll]

If you're strapped for cash, and it doesnt grap or slip, hang in there until the $$$ build up again. Its amazing how shagged they can get until tney give real trouble.

I've got half a dozen Barnett complete clutch kits sat on the shelf. I might order two housings as the next project is a full custom job on my 95 M900 and it's clutch is as grabby as all hell right now!

Ha ha.... I can see where you're going with this.... I thought about a complete slipper clutch set up but the 93 I'm trying to keep as original as possible. I have three hubs to choose from all look good.

My basket looks like yours, and the drum is also worn. My clutch was slipping, grabbing and growling. I severely cleaned up the clutch friction surfaces with 3M scouring pads, then filed the badly hooked tangs on the plates so they were flattish, and my clutch worked perfect. That was 25,000 kms ago. If it starts to play up again I'll file down the tangs again.

This is what I do. I also added a dished plate facing in the opposite direction from the factory supplied one. That pretty much stops the groaning for good.
I don't bother dressing up the basket.

Those OEM clutch plates are as tough as goats knees.
When I got my very tired Monsta some 8 years ago I thought the clutch plates were worn out because the friction bits were so thin.
So I bought a set from a wreckers/breakers. I subsequently measured the stack on the old and the "new" ones I'd bought - they were both within specs.
I expect I'll probably never need the "new" ones.

Agreed...on the road there is no difference.
Most of my riding sees very little clutch usage anyway. There isn't much traffic or reason to stop.
If I ever replace mine it will be with OEM.
They really are rugged.
I replaced my friends worn clutch on his '97 M900 (all plates were blue, it was notchy and would occassionally slip) with an entire unit from a '10 1198 I sourced off of Ebay. Aluminum basket with aluminum plates. All's well now... and quiet too!

Just under $200 Australian delivered - it's not worth messing around with the old one! Plus, looking at FleaBay there are some old second hand ones listed for $90!!! I might list my crappy old one for $50 and put that money in the beer fund [beer]
