Title: timing advanced or retarded
Post by: ducatigirl100 on May 22, 2015, 06:38:22 PM
Hi :)

I've reacenly  chaged the pick up coils (900cc 1995 monster).

Altough I've intalled the new one at the same timing mark the bike runs "rough"...
so far.......
Not the carb
not the ignition modules
not the coils

Symptoms...
engine runs rough
it backfires when I twist the trottle to hard
it "skips a beat every minute or so

Is it to advance ?

If so how I sould  adjust it ?

Did you set the gap to spec?

You could put a timing light on the window to see where the advance mark/dot is in relation to the pointer at full advance.

The directions for adv and ret are correct as the flywheel rotates anti clockwise or forwards.
You need to adjust the gaps to spec and hopefully it will be ok.  If you move the  pick up brackets without marking their position you're in trouble. You only removed the pick ups themselves ay?

Have you replaced the plugs ?

I find that a new pair of plugs every now and then does wonders for how my 'bike runs - whether they're needed or not :-)

I   remove the bracket beacose I add to change the sprag spring in the flywell.  And yes I mark the timing before removing it and placed it back at the exact same position.   But I didint check the air gap  [bang]   spec. 0,6mm to  0,8mm. ...

Arg!!!!!!!!!!   [bang]     I ll   check the timing whit a stobe ligth.... but I will have to open the side cover............again....

On the good side I'm practicing making good gasket joint ;D.

I cant remember exactly. With oem ignition boxes full advance should happen pretty quickly when you rev the bike. It's a surprisingly low rpm. The manual will say.
You have oem boxes or Ignitech?

actually my boyfriend who's a ex AMA racer check it for me  ;D....  I use to know how to use a strobe  but I didint excacly remember it ...

he tells me the at idle the strobe ligth lines up and when it's at full advance he moves to the point of almost loosig the line because it aroud 32 degres.

Hi
Sounds like you're onto it. On the subject of plugs, always check the gap of so called factory set plugs, Ive had brand new ones unopened, in the card board sleeves three correct, one miles out!  More than once.
Too wide a gap can cause same symptoms as above.

With stock ignition setting, the full advance dot should come around as the revs rise and line up at full advance with the reference mark or pointer.
