Title: Fitting a 2013 M1100 Engine into a 2000 M900ie Frame!
Post by: MonsterMadMarty on October 26, 2015, 02:24:13 AM
I have recently picked up a M1100 repairable write-off with an engine showing less than 3000 km, rather than rebuilt that bike I'm wondering how hard will it be to fit into a 2000 M900ie frame?

I've done a mock up using an S2R frame and the frame & engine line up as does the dual swingarm. I understand I'll also need to fit the M1100 throttle bodies but what else?

Will the M900ie ECU work?
Will the M900 wiring harness be ok?
Will the M900 rear sets fit?

What else do I need to consider?

Cheers in advance  [thumbsup]

The 2000 is maybe the small engine mount bolts.

2000 is the last year for the 10mm engine mounting bolts, so you'll have to deal with that as the '13 motor is 12mm.
2000 900i.e. ECU is a no-go
2000 900i.e. wiring harness is a no-go
2000 900i.e. gauges are a no-go

Rearsets?  Yes.  Those will work.

You're basically smack-dab in the middle of custom-made-parts-ville.

I'd start w/an EVO wiring harness and an EVO Ducati Performance ECU w/the immobilizer turned off.  That'll open up gauge options outside of the stock Ducati stuff as well as Ducati stuff if you prefer.

'03-'05 M1000S headers would be a good place to start for exhaust I reckon...  BUT, I'd open up the 'X' in the middle as it's restrictive as hell.

If it's the 'hoop' suspension you're after Marty, then I'd go looking for an '01 Monster frame.  They're slightly larger tube diameters and already have the 12mm engine mounting bolts in them.

If you don't care about the 'hoop', then I'd look at an '02 to '08 frame as they're more readily available and I think they handle a 'bit' better (but what do I know...)

Cheers Duck-Stew,

Would it be possible to sleeve the M1100 motor to take the 10 mm bolts? Or open the frame holes to 12mm?

If I used the EVO harness I could also add the ABS & traction control  ;D

Or you could run flat sides and make your own harness.  The frame can be drilled to 12 mm.  Just a thought.

I'd drill the frame before I sleeved the motor.

But, as a cautionary tale: The well in which the frame bolt and nut reside are not all the same inner diameter.  Before continuing, I'd look into either TPO or Nichols 12mm engine studs and see if you can get the OD of those nuts and then ensure that they'll fit into the smaller diameter well.

Yeah, you could...  But you'll end up spending more $ than if you bought an 1100EVO to begin with.  Have fun.  I've built many a project where the end result was more cost than a new bike so don't mind my comments.  I'm working diligently on becoming old and cranky...

Get off my lawn.

Hi,
If you start with a complete M900ie -00 and a M1100 engine you can reuse most of it.
M1100DS engine: Change timinggear to 848 or HYM1100 DS, change spacer behind front sprocket to the one from SS1000, fit a front intake valve cover with tempsensor and oilcooler fitting from any 1000/1100DS engine (MTS excluded).
Source header from M1000 and ignition coils with dual output.
Sleeve the engine mounting with a 12mm copper tube (t=1mm).
Then you can reuse the M900 ECU (with suitable reflash), TB and complete harness and the M900 rearsets will work.
