Riding home today. 405 South. I see a guy in a white sedan weaving in and out of his lane. He's about 10 car lengths ahead and traffic is moving about 70 MPH. He weaves in and out of his lane, almost striking a couple of cars. I'm thinking he's on a cell phone since it's too early to be drunk (6PM). As I begin to pass him, I give him a short "beep" so he knows I'm there and doesn't run into me. He looks over at me and speeds up. I decide to get away from him and I drop it a gear and speed up. He then swerves into my lane, directly at me. I move over and hit the brakes and let him pass. If I wouldn't have been paying attention I would have certainly been hit.
Anyway. I have his name, phone number, and address. Any suggestions for the phone call I'm gonna make?
Call the police and report him. Perhaps he has done this to other people as well.
Does not hurt to have it on record.
If he was crazy enough to try to run you over your not going to get anywhere with him on the phone.

If he turns around and reports you to the [leo] for the phone call you are going to make, you could find yourself in court.

A report won't do anything. In fact the police won't even take one. No witness's (that I could get at 70 MPH), so it's his word against mine.
I was just thinking of something like, "Hi, this is the motorcyclist that you tried to run off the road, just wanted to say hi." No threat, but maybe he stops thinking he's so anonymous.

There is no crime in calling someone on the phone as long as I do not make threats.
I was hoping it was a company car, it would have been great to report him to an employer.
A person tried to run you off the road ???
The police will take the report.
My aunt was followed by a crazy person and they took her report and looked into it.
They even contacted the person and questioned him.
I have reported several drunk drivers on the road myself. In this case it sound more like road rage but who knows since I was not there.

They won't take a report. I am the police, and I wouldn't take one if sent to the same exact call. There is no point in taking one.

Aren't you a cop?
Show up in your work uniform and explain to him the benefits of being courteous.

You are the police and your asking our advise... Don't they train you guys ;D
Kidding aside do you think it is wise to mess with someone who tried to run you off the road.... its your life I suppose ;D
how did you get his number is what i wanna know. i assume you might even have an address. if you do just steal his license plate so he has to make a trip to the DMV. and after he gets his new plate, swap it out for the old one.
Soooooo many suggestions.
None of them even close to legal.
So all those calls I made to the police when I saw a drunk driver on the road were all in vain :-\

Exactly. Though like I said, a phone call is not illegal, depending on what you said.
Depending on your department's regulations, a phone call could cause more harm than good.
Did you get his personal info as part of an official investigation? Sure, maybe you were helping out another department, or looking into an anonymous complaint, but ultimate, if he has the intelligence to think, "how the hell did that guy find out my name and phone number", it has the possibility of coming back on you.
I say you run radar on the route he takes to work and do your civic duty to make sure he is a responsible driver.

I found his info on the Internet. Just like he could find mine if I was stupid enough to put a web address on my license plate frame. Like I said, I was looking for something funny. I probably won't call at all because in the end, what the point.

Otherwise, you know what the guy looks like and where he lives. The random, flamingly gay, "Hey, cute thang! Where you been all my life?" is always a good opener.
Does he have teenage kids? Most parents will believe anything told to them with regard to what shenanigans 16 year old Johnny/Sally has been up to.
Worst case scenario, just get a work friend to go with you. Knock on his door and, very calmly, let him know who you are and how you know him. The whole time, your friend is standing at the base of his front walk watching the street. Lookout-style.
Ring. . .Ring . . .
Hello?
Female: Is this Mr. Watkins?
Yes?
Mr. Ernest Watkins?
Yes, Who is this?
Mr. Watkins, this is Mary X, and I wanted you to know that your wife has been having an affair with my husband, He confessed it to me yesterday, and I thought you should know.
I read this awhile back.... perhaps it can inspire you. Not the same situation but close.... and if someone actually pulled this off they would have epic hero status.

No need for funny here, and, since you are a LEO, certainly nothing that can be considered harassment. Just a civil phone call to inform him his poor behavior is not anonymous. Hopefully he might get the idea he may not be so lucky next time.

I got a msg back from the mom saying they were changing the number.
I do have the number in my phone still. It's listed as "Soul" in my contact list [laugh]
post an ad for spider monkeys on Craigslist. You could accidentally put Guy LaDouche's phone number for the contact, and have a typo that says to only call after 10 pm.
I would put a personal ad out in his name on Craigslist. It can be comepletely normal but I would say he was into some "alternative" hobbies. If lives with his significant other, he will have a fun time trying to explain the calls. If he lives alone, he will still have to deal with all the weirdo phone calls. Let other people do the work for you.
first off i would like to ask this
if it's so important that something come of this then why wouldn't you take a report from someone else who's life was put in danger by this asshat?
if you think that it's not all that serious then why waste the effort.
secondly
what's the website? we can go after him there in mass.
put his name and number in the local newspaper for "massages"
my dimwit co-worker actually had this one happen to her: her name and phone number was put on an ad for fantasy maid service. she gets calls all the time asking how much, when she can be over, and how exotic a fantasy can she be. (no, i didn't do it)

When you have no independent witness's nothing will ever come of it. If someone DEMANDS a report I would take one, all the while knowing that it will be a "DA Reject" within a week.
I called. I spoke with his wife. SHe asked if I wanted to leave a message :) .
Me: "Yes I would, please let him know the motorcyclist he tried to kill on the 405S called." I then explained the incident to her. I let her know I was a police officer on the way home from work, and to let him know that next time he gets mad about a little "beep" to remember that not everything he does is anonymous.
looooooooooooooooooong pause.
Me: "Are you there?"
Her: "Yes, I'm just in shock."
Me: 'I understand, hopefully he will think things through next time."
Her: "I assure you that he will."
Good on ya for taking the high road. [thumbsup]

1) call the cops and let them know about what you perceived as road rage
2) if you still feel the need, call the guy from a pay phone and let him know how you feel about him. but avoid any reference to yourself/location, etc....
3) chalk it up to experience

Hi, this is the biker the male motorist at this address tried to kill today.
Does someone at this address drive an xxx?
IS YOUR HOUSE MADE OF WOOD?
YA I know, yir going to jail. But just once wouldn't ya love to do it?
I had a guy intentionally try to take me out with the missus on the back last year. Hard to call the coppers while on 2 wheels with the brain bucket on, so I followed the a$$hole. There was a verbal altercation, I peeled away. He was stoopid enuff to turn into his neighborhood right before the "conversation", I found his house the next day.
Took me 3 days to decide NOT to let the fire out of his truck, then I called the cops....TOO LATE.
Shoulda just freed all that fire from the truck ASAP.
GAWD I hate a$$holes
...How much fire is trapped in a late 80's vintage Chevy truck anyhow?
Enough [laugh]
I agree that you should set a speed trap for him on his way to/home from work.
Hit him with a couple of tickets, and you might even mention that you're targeting him since you saw him swerving around a lot one day. Maybe you can even catch him while he's swerving around again, then you can make him take a field sobriety test, etc. Make life hassle for him, and each time you pull him over, just mention to him that he needs to be more careful with his driving.
Let's be honest, you can pull pretty much anyone over for some minor infraction. Make him late to/home from work a few times, and maybe he'll rethink his driving.

the only time i called because of something liek that, they sent a trooper out to take a report, i met him at a rest stop along the road. 2 weeks later i met the kid that did it in court with the trooper. i agreed to let it all drop after the kids father and i spoke. the kid was shaking so i was pretty sure he learned his lesson, no need to pursue it further.
some people take these things seriously, and that makes me feel a little better.
i think you handled it pretty well, though i would have left out the part about being a police officer. just say that you got his info from his website which was on his car and that should be enough to make him rethink his advertising method and driving style.
i say you call from a pay phone, basically tell him i saw you on the road way, i know you/your car/your number/where you work/where you live and where your family is..and tell him that he knows nothing about you, so that you are watching him, heck anyone can watch anyone, that is what the cops and private investigators do and they dont' tell you that they are watching you..
at no time do you ever say you are going to do anything all you are doing is saying you know information about him, how is that a threat? you never said you are going to do anything, that is his imagination runnign away.
sometimes the threat of an a$$ kicking is worse than the a$$ kicking.
and if you really are LEO, you know the golden rule because LEO enforce and abide by it all the time, its only illegal if you get caught and someone can prove it in a court of law, if you can't then technically, it didnt' happen it only allegedly happened.

I really am a LEO, and that's actually not a golden rule in law enforcement. I'm also not going to risk my job giving some fool an ass whooping over road rage. The only "golden rules" in law enforcement my FTO's taught me were, we go home every night, we don't get wet, and we always make sure we eat. ;)
