Not true! There is some extreme chance where having the door CLOSED during the earthquake could give you just enough lateral strength to keep your house from falling down. But at that point... I don't think you'd wanna be anywhere near that doorway. Also, if you are at that point, having the door open and standing in it is likely to get you killed too. ;D

Hard to tell since the fault wasn't identified...a least not that I have seen.
The San Andreas is a strike-slip fault. This means the two halves move past each other laterally. I doubt the fault was actually on the San Andreas though.
The San Andreas transfers massive stresses to the crust on either side of it, causing a whole bunch of different fault types to be formed in the general area. The other two basic types are Normal, and Reverse. Hard to explain, so just google if you're curious. My guess is the 'quake was on this type of fault, as San Andreas EQs tend to be very large (think 1906 San Francisco).
