Title: Teach your kids
Post by: Grampa on August 05, 2008, 09:43:51 AM
How to use tools

this month

I saved 250 bucks in plumbing repairs, by doing the work myself

I saved 75 bucks by doing my own yard work

I saved about 1500 bucks by doing my own bodywork on the 1098 ((oops)

I'll save 40 bucks by cutting the glass I broke on lms new picture frame (oops)

I saved 150 bucks by hanging ceiling fans myself.

Before the boys went back east, I spend a couple of hours out in the garage with them, just having them take apart some old clocks lm's dad gave them.   They had a blast.

I think we may take apart the roto-tiller when they get home.  :D

I'm pretty glad my dad sat down with me and we fixed my car when ever it had an issue or built stuff or whatever in general.  What an invaluable ability.  It has carried over to a lot of things.  I couldn't imagine having to call someone for routine repairs.  I have, in turn, becom pretty handy.  Maybe not the best guy with a wrench, but decent enough.

+1

I remember working on cars all the time with my Dad. And not only did I get a good intro to things mechanical, I got to learn new words.  ;)

I'd add: Teach your kids to cook.

Eating out, or eating boxed food, for every meal is expensive.

And don't forget the girls!  I have a very hickish father who has taught me how to do everything from hunt and fish to changing the oil in my car and building birdhouses!  I can't tell you how much money I save doing things on my own, plus it's nice to hear guys say, "so you ARE more than just a pretty face!" ;D

I don't think anyone meant to exclude us female types...just happens that bp only had boys around to teach these things to.  I could be wrong.

Great advise.  I hated helping my father so much when I was a kid but now I realize how important it was that I learned so much as a child.  I've done everything from replace all the plumbing piping in my 1st house to gut a bathroom to the bare studs and replace everything including the tub and tile.  Finished a basement.  Reroofed a friends barn, landscaping and gardening and all types of electrical work.  Only thing he didn't teach me was engine repair which I'm slowly learning on my own w/ the help of some friends.   I'm sure it's saved me 10s of thousands of dollars in the last 18 years that I've been out of my parents house.

cool, i have this rabbit that i'm having trouble skinning. can you give me a hand?  ;D

i learned how to sew, cook, iron, do my own laundry, turn wrenches, hunt, fish, build things, and how to get yourself out of the mess you just created because you dove in headfirst. i later learned how to read directions, pretty much at the same time that my dad did.

the funny part is my mom taught me about gutting fish and skinning animals. my dad taught me about building and repairing things. they both taught me how to cook and sew.

Sewing is such a handy skill to have.  I've repaired socks, fixed some shirts, and even put a zipper back on a tank bag.

I'm amazed by how many kids are not taught things like this anymore.

One one hand, makes me think I have a better chance of be'n king when the big rock in the sky falls, on the other hand, it's gonna be sad see'n people die because they cant feed themselves w/o a microwave.

My mom taught me you're not a man until you've walked a mile in your mom's shoes.

Not literally.

Well, literally walking a mile in her shoes would be painful and all.

So there'd be some character building there.

But, back on topic, I meant the traditional cooking, cleaning, laundry stuff.

Growing up all the chores were rotated through every member of the household. Something I'll definitely be passing on to my two kids once they're old enough to do more than "pretend to help papi cook dinner."

DaniD, honestly you get exponentially cooler every time something comes out of your ....??fingers????...

I need to put up outdoor lights and a garage door opener.  Hopefully I can get some electrical learnin' then.

One skill not inherited, map reading.  Far better than either parent in that aspect.  They needed to be TOMTOM'ed.

So much easier to give the kid a 5 for lunch at McD's and TV is a cheaper babysitter.

DIY does save money and there is a feeling of accomplishment, but you spend time that you can't earn back.  I like to do most things myself like plumbing, carpentry, painting, bike things and car things (oil changes, valves, etc).  Sometimes it's better to just pay to get it done, I pay someone to do my laundry :P

I really think that eventually, whether it's a "big rock falling from the sky" or just a natural evolution of our society, we are all going to have to learn to rely on ourselves again for everyday things.  Either things will get so expensive it's cheaper to grow your own produce and make your own soap, or products will become so tainted it's healthier and safer to milk your own cows and churn butter!
