ugh...this worries me.  i was just noticing today that my speedometer needle bounces around like crazy at idle.  i hope this isn't a sign of things to come.  :-\

That could be a binding speedo cable. Try unscrewing it from the back of the speedo and shooting some lube-y stuff down the tube.

You don't have a speedo cable.

I fixed my gauge from doing what yours is doing.  Easy fix. Stupid tabs that hold the needle servos tend to break.  6 out of 8 broke on mine.

oh, duh...but thx for saving me the time/looking like an idiot trying to find a non-existent speedo cable!  :-[

where would i get new tabs from?  dealer?

Can't. 

You just have to make due with what you think might work.  Electrical tape worked for me.

Bought mine and on drive home needles went crazy, i have just replaced whole unit under warranty , both speedo and tachometer needles fell off, 2 year old and 2,400 miles, would have cost $ 800 lol

Eh, sorry for the bad advice. I keep forgetting about these newfangled electronics.  ;)

Yeah, it's been off for a couple months now -- idle was pretty much pointing straight down...  I like my bike, but these little piddly problems I seem to keep having are getting old...
