As promised, here are some in-progress shots of the detail work I'm doing to build an exact replica of my bike in 1/12 scale. The base kit is a Tamiya 916 that I am detailing with a lot of scratch building as well as some aftermarket detail parts. The first round of photos here show my scratchbuilt details.
The steering stem castle nut, showing how each hole has been drilled out.

The engine, about half done with preliminary paint. Next step is to paint the bolts and details and give it some light weathering.
Ohlins!
I was so disgusted by the cheap-looking fork stanchions I decided to take matters into my own hands. This photo shows the stock plastic on the left, and the new polished steel stanchion on the right. I made it with an old steel wire-wheel spoke which I mirror polished and cut to size with a dremel wheel. Coincidentally they were the same width, which saved me a trip to Home Depot for metal stock.
Showing the parts of the fork - the stock fork was a solid piece, I cut out the plastic stanchion and drilled the leg and base to insert the new metal stanchion.

The oil breather.
The detailed and corrected throttle body before painting. Everything in white is styrene stock I cut and shaped to make the details. The original TB in the kit was a leftover from their 888 racer kit, and was an old-style double injector with some very shoddy detail. I converted them to the correct single injector items and added detail, including the sub-1mm "fuel line" (which is actual rubber hose).
One of the ignition coils.
Showing the fairing with the first coat of primer. Notice the 0.4 mm holes for the rivets - the stock kit has moulded on bumps masquerading as rivets - I have genuine 0.5mm metal rivets on order!
The relay pack and the starter solenoid.

That's awesome! That thing's gonna look so cool when you start getting it together.
If you don't mind, post plenty of pics for us all along the way. [thumbsup]
OMFG
cool, but maddening to me.
Ill be content to look at the pictures ;D
I'm not anywhere near patient enough nor detail orientated to pull off such a feat but I sure can appreciate your work. Thanks, can't wait to see more. [thumbsup]
awesome work, but if you wanna see hardcore, check this out:

I remember that vid from a long time ago, awesome!
I built mine in 1.087 scale.
It turned out as a 996. ;D
very cool. I'd be a big painted, gluey mess with a mound of fingerprint smudged plastic mess. It'd look like someguy's bike.
more pics as the building continues please.
very cool project [thumbsup]
can't wait to see the finished product!!
:-[ I building that model too. I was pretty proud of it till I saw yours. Good work keep it up.
For those who haven't seen my particular bike, this is what the model will look like when done (minus the AGIP and FbF stickers). Gloss black wheels, satin frame and swingarm, gold forks (need to work on that, as you can see the gold paint is pretty rough), Ohlins shock, and the C/F parts. Aftermarket bits I have on order are miniature exhaust springs, .5 mm rivets, electrical plug set and miniature shrink tubing, photo etched fasteners and brake discs, detailed tire valves, and carbon fibre decal transfer. What you see above is only the beginning of the detail!

make the beast with two backsIN HELL! [thumbsup] impressive - Chris
ps, I used to have 1/8th & 1/10th RC stuff so I appreciatte that
Here's the latest round of pics:
Freshly painted wheels... These will get a polishing and wax after they've cured for a week.
The exhaust - this is the second layer of paint, I'm building up the heat discolouration one layer at a time.
What's this? That's right, there will be exhaust springs!

The shock - note the metal rod, same idea as the forks.

Main body with paint; the paint is a three-part lacquer (specific primer, colour coat, then specific gloss) which is why the colour coat alone is semi-gloss. This will be polished, then clear coated, then polished again, then decals, then another clear coat, then final polish and wax. That doesn't include painting the white numberplates, which adds over a WEEK (three-four coats, one day between coats, then one week of curing before polishing) to my painting process.

Rad and V-piece. The V-piece is painted semi-gloss black on my bike. The metal grille over the oil-cooler aperture is a piece taken off my bike - it's cut from the intake mesh (which I don't use). Nice to have a connection to the real thing.

Incredible. [thumbsup]
the attention to detail is phenomenal [thumbsup]
A true master at work [thumbsup]
You sir, are the model meister. Congratulations. Really, your attention to detail is amazing.
I started my Tamiya 916SP model 4 years ago.. I did the engine and made the chain, the forks look shite without metal sliders. I may just have to get some ideas from you ;D
freakin outstanding man, just outstanding.... [clap]
How do you paint in the weathered/used look on the engine and controls?
damn that is amazing.
WOW...
ps: how big IS a Canadian cent?...not familiar with that currency...could you please use US cents, Euro cents or Lira? :)

It's a simple weathering technique we use all the time on military stuff. You mix one part artist oil paint (either raw sienna, burnt sienna, raw umber, burnt umber, or jet black, depending on the base colour) to about 10 parts artist's thinner (which is very light and won't peel the enamel basecoat off as easily as standard paint thinner). You use this wash to fill in the cracks and crevices, let it dry, then swab the highlights clean with a piece of tissue or Q-tip with some thinner on it. Brings out all the recessed details and gives a "shadow" effect. You can then drybrush with a lighter colour to bring out the highlights even more.

You can smother fire with dirt.
Given that I expect fires, it's for the best if I keep a supply of dirt on hand.
i just got my 1/12 tamiya caterham in the mail and this really inspires me to do a good job, can't wait to see more pics!

it'll be awhile till i start mine, need to collect paints and time, probably a winter project. reading this thread i'm considering sending it to NeufUnSix to do it right.
that is the cutest gas cap ever! :)

You can't see it in the picture, but it has a Cagiva elephant on it as well. It's too shallow for the wash to pick up. Tiny!
wow, man you are on CRACK!
[clap] [clap]
You are one patient man...
I have built the Tamiya Desmosedicci, M1, and 888, but with nowhere near the detail you have managed to include.
To be honest, Im happy with what Ive built, but I spend half the time trying to make sure I don't make things worse - not better!
I mean, you accidentally squeeze out too much glue once, and you have to strip the paint off, go back, try again... but now the plastic softened up, and the paint never sticks right again, and then the glue just softens the plastic more...
You really learn to do things right the first time, but one tiny mistake can set you back big time.

That is simply amazing..... [popcorn]

Custom decals; I'm skipping the Fast By Ferracci decals because I never did like them. :)

Name tags on the windscreen. The black lip is a rubber hose split and wrapped around the screen, just like the real thing. I wish I could print white decals, because that's what my name tags are on the real bike.

The fusebox detail. I printed a label decal, it's a bit rough but it's better than nothing.
Lower engine detail. Notice the rubber hose connected to the rear brake master cylinder; I made a small fluid reservoir (hidden behind the frame) and attached it to the correct point. The brake lines are going to be stainless steel braided line from Detail Master.
Yes, that's my license plate! I used photoshop to take a photo of the plate and cleaned it up to print onto a decal, which was applied to a cut-down kit plate so it is the correct Quebec plate size.
Showing the gloss finish. As you can see, it's wavy, which pisses me off because I worked very hard to get all the base and colour coats glassy smooth. I'll see what I can do.

Cool post, just found it.
How much HP you figuring?

That is awesome. Do you have any pics of the model before the mods? It would be cool to compare.
I've just bookmarked this thread. That way, the next time I start to fret about my tendency to be obsessive-compulsive, I can just take a quick look and put things in perspective.
My hat's off to you.
Here's the promotional pic for the kit, so this is what it looks like when built cleanly (as in no weathering) and box-stock.
And this one shows some of the detailing I will be doing; this is the Dexter Models Senna transkit, with photo etched brake discs (cast iron type) and fasteners, as well as a corrected rear wheel nut with circlip. I have the kit coming in soon, among the other detail bits.

This is awesome. Looks like a lot fun.
I'm holding off from posting pics until it's finished, right now the bodywork is done and I'm just waiting on my detail parts to finish the running gear and the wiring.

DERBY!
That model's the inspiration for neufs sproject.
Yeah, I set out to top that. :D
So far it's coming along well, I got the detail bits today (from StradaSports.com in MO) and it's almost finished. There are a few flaws, mainly the numberplates - didn't turn out great due to a paint reaction between the white and the red around the masking. Overall it looks very good - but no pics until I'm finished!
