Interesting results of the survey:
* Republicans are happier than Democrats.
* People who worship frequently are happier than those who don't.
* The rich are happier than the poor.
* Whites and Hispanics are happier than blacks.
* Married people are happier than the unmarried.
* Dog owners and cat owners rate the same.
* Sunbelt residents are happier than everyone else.
Some I am not at all surprised about, i.e. rich happier, married happier and sunbelt folks happier. Surprised that GOP folks are statistically happier, esp with the election looming.
Also surprised that "Hispanics" are as happy as whites, but then again that is not a ethnic group, so they can be asian, white or black..
QuoteThe reason might seem obvious, since "Republicans tend to have more money than Democrats, andâ€"as we've already discoveredâ€"people who have more money tend to be happier," the report states.
But even after adjusting for income, poor Republicans are happier than poor Democrats, and rich Republicans are happier than rich Democrats.
dont forget that all the respondents where lonely and wanted someone to talk to.
so are they really happy?

Yep. The ones with kids all got divorced and are now the bitter miserable single people. [thumbsup]
Republicans are happier than democrats because republicans (I'm generalizing here) are more rich and more religious than the dems.
Also, the democrats aren't happy because they are too busy trying to solve world problems. [laugh]
Sure I'm happy. I'm unmarried, but dating a wonderful woman - and no kids, just cute little dogs. My bike may be back on the road as early as next week. I hate politics and politicians, and hearing about either makes me want to head for the hills (so party makes no difference to me). I have a job right now and a job interview next week. I just reloaded 100 rounds for my 1911 (and cleaned up the Dillon progressive so it's nice and shiny now), and have been taking my .308 out more often lately. I'm unhindered by any religious guilt, obligations, or frustrations. I've now had a couple beers, a large whiskey, and a bratwurst sammich with wasabi horseradish sauce and it's time for me to go to my nice comfortable bed. Yep. Manny = happy. ;D
Im not happy.
I am a republican.
I am not poor, but neither am i rich.
I am not married or have a gf, but i fell in love with a crazy pregnant dog destroyed any possibility of me ever dating another Italian girl.
What about the Asian people?
Dogs own. cats cant run with you.
I would kill myself if i had to live in an area thats always 100degrees. Hmm.. i use to live in Florida, I miss that place a hell of a lot more than New York City right now.
Yea... im not happy. Im gonna kill myself and haunt you all for making me realize that. >:(

I'm newly married, but no kids. couple of dogs. I have a job...but I still sit closer to the poor side of the survey. I'm a member of a church (from when I was a kid), but don't ever go. I'm not too political, but I'd probably lean more to the democratic side (not sure who I'm going to vote for though ???).
All and all...I'd say I'm happy right now. I went through a depression stage a few years ago, but I got over it.
buck up, emo kids!
I am a non-Republicans, an atheist, poor, unmarried, I don't have any pets and don't live anywhere the sun belt...
Yet I am the happy sonofapregnant dog that ever what was.
Its a good thing I don't read Live Science magazine or I might be joining He Man in the suicide booth. [coffee]
I don't think that most people are unhappy because of their political affiliations or their lack of pets. I think most people are unhappy because they are frustrated with their current situation and unmet goals in their life and they focus on whats missing as apposed to whats there.

i totally agree with that -- it isn't being a GOP that makes you happy or being married that makes you happy.
it is happy and unhappy people choosing to become those things.
it makes sense that a happy person is more likely to get married than an unhappy one -- who wants to marry a sad sack?
it is the choices we make AFTER being happy or unhappy
i'm neither happy nor unhappy. though if i had a wife like some of the guys in the DFW group, i'd definitely be moving to the "happy" side of the spectrum.

The study isn't complete. They didn't look at smart people vs. stupid people. Seems like stupid people are generally happier than smart people - think of the expression "fat, dumb, and happy."
That's probably the root correlation for republicans feeling happier. [laugh]

* People who worship frequently are happier than those who don't. I don't worship, unless you count "Oh god, oh god, oh god" in bed

I'm happy. I made a decision a few years back to be happy and if something is making me unhappy to do something to change it. I was sick of hearing myself complain.

Depends how you look at education. Are you talking only about schooling or the education your parents give you when they are bringing you up? I think your upbringing can tremendously influence how smart you are ;)

I think the report was referring to formal education. Your point well taken but there are other factors as well - I had great parents and should've been real smart but I also used to gnaw on lead.
I'm a member of the GED alumni
for years... I beat myself up for it.
then..... I forgave myself, accepted the fact that will never know everything, and poof...... instant happy.
I'm a damn librul, agnostic (trending atheistic), probably won't make enough to owe income taxes this year (I'm starting a business, so it's all outflow, not income), not married (though I'll admit that most everyone assumes we are, so that might be more of a technicality), two dog/two cat owner.
And I wake up every morning freakin' ecstatic. If life was any better, I'd start looking around for Allen Funt.
Maybe it's because I just moved to the sunbelt, but my main complaint about life here in Arizona is that it doesn't snow enough & my skis are getting dusty.
Like a number of others have mentioned, I realized one day about four or five years ago that I was unhappy with my situation and had been for a very long time and set about fixing the parts that didn't work. That's where the big fun starts!

you probably didn't go too far with a formal education then.
formal education and intelligence are correlated -- not 100% but if you pick PhD's out of the population, they will tend to have higher IQs whereas same-age group HS grads will tend to have lower IQs
not causation, but smart people tend to just get more formal education.
dont forget the "get a life" aspect of higher edumacation.
I dated a PHD once, hung out with her crowd a few times. They (and I'm not say'n this about all of them), were a sad bunch and very shallow. They had spent thier entire life, in school, and had not a clue as to how the world worked outside of a book and a classroom.
If you are educated, and do nothing with it.... then, what a waste.
An education is only as good as the person who shares it.

It's true, as kid I used to chew on lead fishing line sinkers and the old lead pellets used in pellet guns. No telling how smart I could've been. I'm not saying that you're completely wrong but education is not the measure of intelligence - it just shows that you can follow instructions well and that you'll probably be a good employee.
I honestly don't think I could be happier. On the sorrow scale I am in the .001% at worst. If I ever did have a truly BAD turnover, I would still be at 2% of the world's population.
I don't see how I could ever actually end up suffering. I might be slightly uncomfortable at times a little frustrated at other times, but I'll never suffer. So any time I do have downfall, I just look at it as something to learn and move on.
Its like when I go to the hospital and get asked the pain scale. I had skin grafts and those are pretty severe pain. So I have that to go off of and the broken foot got rated at a 4-5ish, when they tried to reset it I'd give it 7-8ish. A mf'er mauled by a bear or shark probably wouldn't even have given it that.
The nurse told me the lady next to me was giving a migraine a 9-10.
