Really?  Ive used imageshack a lot, and I didn't do anything different this time than I normally would.

Ill put the tags back. . .

also, shim clips?  I bagged all these chips and there's like 10 or 15 of them.  They don't have round cross sections either so Im thinking they're not shim clips. . .

Put the damn image tags back in..... ;D [laugh]

I did, and nothing shows up.

I opened the link, did copy image location, pasted here, highlighted the link, and clicked the img icon up over the smileys, clicked preview and nada. . .

You try it ;D

I had them working.... [roll]    ;D

I'll fix it, but you have to promise to leave it alone. :P

I spoke to ducvet last night. He said chances are that's tranny stuff. If it's a low mileage motor that was ridden hard it's not unusual. If the bike was babied he said you could see that for a long time although not as much each time

Im planning to ignore it ;D

Any input on cutting flywheels or gears?  (see other thread in tech)

Also, if its from the trans, what specifically would be shedding metal like that?  Ive never seen one apart so Im not familiar with the inner workings.

I guess everything...

not bearings so much as the engagement dogs and the slots in the mating gear.

Maybe he'll check the pics and offer his opinion.

Check the alternator cover bearing. Those go bad on late 90s models and it is the shaft making an oblong hold where the bearing sits -- and shaving off pieces of itself as it turns out of round.

Crank galley plug slivers will be non-ferrous, they are pieces of the CASE shaving off as the plug backs out.   You will see them in the strainer, not the magnet.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Looked like it on the pic, but OK, 15.....

Could take a closeup on the chips, cleaned & away from the plug?

those look like a normal early ducati at the first or second oil change. I would venture a guess that you are looking at gear shavings from the gearbox. since you have no history on the motor (it is a 99 or newer for sure) I would assemble the bike and use an inexpensive "break in " oil. do another oil change in 1000 miles and you should see a cleaner magnet.

the crank plug on 900's are aluminum and they rub on the steel outer main bearing shell. any crank plug shavings would be aluminum from the crank plug. they would not be on your magnet anyway being aluminum. often the starter gear washer pieces will be larger and more flat.

good luck

+1

Ducati gears are square cut and tend to loose the edges on teeth.  They look like really small finger nail clippings.  I got a rash of them on my first oil change after break in on both bikes (I started having fun ;D) .  Might be previous owner never really thrashed at the transmission (good thing) or you've been messy at shifting (clunk!). I wouldn't worry to much about it until the next oil change.  If they still show up in the same numbers and your sure you haven't  been too hard on the trans then perhaps further investigation is warrented.

For the record I haven't run this engine yet or ridden the bike it's going In to. Since it's a track only bike you are ok to presume it will be ridden hard. Looks like it's probably fine from what you guys are saying.

I was planning to just run it anyway and see what happens ;D
