So I have an 09 696 and I like the windscreen.  I purchased a set of Rizoma 22mm bars.  They have worked on other 696, but with out the windscreen.

Is there any safety issues I should worry about with adding a little length to the handlebars.  I only need to add about 1/4" to each side of the bars to clear the fairing, but I will add 1/2" to the end of each side.  My thought is to have some aluminium machined down so that it fits inside the hollow end of the bar, and has the same outside dia as the bar.  Thoughts?

why don't you look at some of the other options for windscreens. I know Barracuda has one and there are a few others, including one in france.

Update:

I took the bars to the local machine shop and had them add 2 inches to each end of the bar.  The extension at the end of the bar is solid aluminum and extends into the bars by 1.5 inches.  I think that this will work nicely.

Wow, two inches on each side?  Hope you're not planning on lane splitting...

I just went out to the garage and measured the end to end distance of the factory bars... about 31 inches.  The extended bars measure just under 31 inches.  so I don't think that they are too wide.  And lane splitting in Indiana is not legal.

Chchadder

It's not legal in many places, but... ;D

That's cool that the bars measure up to the stock length now, so no worries!!
