Rear Shock Remove/Replace

Have looked thru the DMF How Tos and Tutorials, and searched the threads for how to take out and replace a rear shock - so far the best info I can get is that it's simple !

So, when all the stuff has been removed to gain access to the top and bottom bolts what's the basic sequence ?

Or is there some obvious place on DMF that I've missed

I had a go awhile back and thought the spring should be unloaded first so I backed off the preload rings but there was still plenty of spring pressure when the rings were almost at the end of the threaded bit. I figured a spring compressor may be needed at that stage so just put things back to where they were.

The original shock is worn out and I'm sure the spring is too soft.

Are you trying to replace the shock or just the spring?  You will need a spring compressor to take the spring off.

Careful unbolting if you've got the bikes on stands...  I wound up in the floor with an M750 parked on top of me at one point during my spring replacement.  Seems I pulled a bit hard with the wrench.

I used saw horses with a 2 * 6 to hold up my back end.

i tried there and all they had was clunky car spring compressors that does no good on our springs. 

I did mine and my posts were probably some of the ones you read.  I was worried about doing it myself but in the end it was a joke to do.  I did it by myself in my garage with no rear stand and no spring compressor.  However it was important to loosen the spring completely before removing the top and bottom bolts.  Then just prior to removing the bolt/bolts you will need to hold up the rear end.  If you dont have a rear stand, this can be done by a trusty friend or just a block placed between the top of the tire and the frame.

If it's a hoop style suspension no compressor required.

Have centrestand. Yes, hoop style.

Just didn't want to pull a bolt and have things flying around the shed ( again )

Shock replacement is overdue but also that spring must be painted black, been yellow far too long

And the bushes/bearings in that top yoke thingy are worn out
