The area around an accident is where you need to be most aware because of the rubber neckers. You should be watching for those idiots to needlessly slow down or drift around as they gawk instead of gawking yourself.

I beep at rubberneckers in front of me.  It annoys me to no end having sat through a bunch of traffic only to find that the accident was on the other side of the road.  So beep; and beep often.  ;D

It's supposed to be a distraction, as in you're thinking about the music instead of concentrating on riding (and they said he was even fiddling with his ipod?). They also didn't mention what he was listening toâ€"some music (or speech) is barely there and some helps people relax and focus.
