A little computer hardware help...please
«

So the DVD burner in my HP died so I bought a new one from Newegg.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106333
One problem...
I'm a moron...
My computer is IDE not SATA.
My questions are will this adapter solve the problem, do I need any drivers in addition to the adapter, and can I get something like it locally like at best buy or wally world?

Probably for the restocking charge plus shipping in both directions.
Prolly simpler to just bite the bullet and buy the adapter... Then when the computer dies I can use the drive in the new updated
used
one I score.

Another option, if you ever have the need to go portable:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VXDFJE/ref=asc_df_B000VXDFJE923910?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=googlecom09c9-20&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B000VXDFJE
Frys would probably have an adapter in stock if you are close to one.
SATA to USB
http://shop1.frys.com/product/5625211
Or, Microcenter
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0267067
I would also try Radio Shack.

What model PC is it? What OS?
Don't get that adapter, if you try to burn CD's it could hork it up. You should get a controller card. It will have a few SATA ports so you can also get a new HD without the need to upgrade the PC if you don't want to.

It an HP 780n running xp pro
Why would it 'hork' up trying to burn? Keep in mind I bought a burner with the intention of burning.

the adapter has to "translate" IDE to SATA. It take a very very short period of time to do that but when you're burning a CD/DVD that short period of time can cause burn errors. The drive you bought has a buffer which helps thing. Still, it's not an ideal solution. Getting a SATA card will let you burn things faster & more reliably.
Get this or something similar:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132001
This has 2 internal ports so you could also get a SATA HD. More options for future expansion.
Here's the specs for your computer, you have PCI - Not PCI-x which is more common these days. You need to make sure you get the PCI version if you get a card.

The controller card seems to be data only.
I also have a power issue.
I'm thinking I should just get an IDE drive.

They make a pill for that:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812104652
You can get that at any computer place - Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc.
Don't get an IDE drive - it won't be easy to transfer to your next PC nor will it be as fast.

Yup...
but by the time I buy the controller...a sata data cable and the power adapter I'm within $5 of the price of an IDE drive.
Thanks for your input.
I'll do the math and decide.

Sorry for the delay in responded to your PM Nate...either one will work. I would lean towards the adapter only because it gives you a drive in the future on a newer computer. Just go with the IDE to SATA adapter and call it good.
