Why helicoils suck

I have used em for years, both as a professional mechanic and in my cave.  Never had a problem.  My only gripe is cost due to the special size tap to cut threads for the insert.

It has been a hunnert years, but when I was getting started I seem to recall reading that breaking the drive tang off actually somehow locked the insert in place.

I have never installed one and left the tang, I have always broken them off, even in blind holes.

Lately I have tried Keenserts.  I like them as they use a standard tap to cut the threads for the insert, they are affordable and easy to use.

I think properly installed, any of them are a valid repair.

The only time i hda problem with a helicoil is when it was not seated deep enough as i had not drilled and retapped the old hole deep enough . i removed it and redid the the job and its OK ..I use them many times on bikes and Offshore on ROVs and heavy plant.

I just did some searching and find the hole size is actually the same.

I stand corrected.

I'll still use heli-coils... ;D

I've never had an issue with them.

Heli-coils are teh suck.  Time serts are the only way to go.  If it were me I wouldn't mess up the original threads in the first place.    ;D
