10A is only if you are using a pair of freeway blasters (low and high tone).  Each horn pulls 5A each.  So if you are running 2 then you need a relay.

So...
If I'm only using the low tone, that's just 5A and I don't need a relay?
BTW, where did you find this info? online?

http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/horn-relay/motorcycle-horn-relay.htm.  Other sources also just google it.

In any case you should have a fuse.  The stock wiring runs thru the stock fuse box.

o.k. something's wrong.

it's either a bad relay, a bad fuse, bad wires or something else.  could it be me?

i believe i hooked everything up correctly.  i even tested the horn by hooking it up to the original female blade connectors.  it works, but am concerned that i actually need to install a relay to prevent future costly electrical bills.  i used the original horn wires and hooked them to the relay:  purple wire connector to relay's #85 blade, black wire connector to relay's #86 blade.  i used a wire to connect the relay's #87 blade to one of the blades on the horn, which according to the horn's installation instructions is not polarity conscious.  the other horn blade is connected by a wire that was included with the horn and is grounded to the frame.  finally, i connected the relay's #30 blade to the positive battery terminal using a wire with an inline 15 amp fuse.  the fuse is tucked in under the tank near the battery.  the wiring kit's relay is a 40 amp.  the relay is installed at the front of the bike right next to the horn using the original mount.

so what happens?  key in, ignition on, engine off, lights work, turn signals work, dash lit up, horn doesn't work.  when i depress the horn button i hear an electrical "connection" sound, but nothing else.  for the fun of it, i even switched the connectors from relay #85 and #86, and back, but still nothing.  i've since removed the relay to test the horn only using the original connectors.  yep, it still works, but i'm trying to figure out this damn relay hookup.

any advice?  please help.

you have it wired correctly

either bad relay or a bad connection

got a multimeter ? now would be a good time to use it
i dont care if you have been a mechanic for 10 years doing something for a long time does not make you good at it, take my gf for an example shes been walking for 28 years and still manages to fall over all the time.

i don't want to be a thread jacker and lament about my install problem, so i started a new thread here:
