Yeah, stuff is expensive. This mill should last 20 years.

On a non machining related note, I just found out that one of my old employees has been diagnosed with ALS.
He worked for me part time in the evenings for a few years and was just a really great guy. I don't remember how old he is but I would think mid-late 30's. Maybe early 40's. It just sucks and I'm a little sad about it.
Live your lives well, friends. There are no guarantees of anything.

A cycling friend down here was recently diagnosed with ALS as well. What a horrible disease. George is a bit later on in life than your old employee, but to see the very rapid decline is scary.

New machine is on my floor awaiting installation.
The rigging took *a lot* longer than expected.
Rigging = open your wallet and it closes when it closes. This one will hit for $9500 when I was expecting 4-ish
Such is life...

More pics to come. I hope. Flickr is not the easiest to get to cooperate and it's currently being an asshole.

A few days prior to removal was when we took the old machine offline. 10 gallons of hydraulic oil covers a decent amount of concrete.

With the machine removed you can see the inside of the tool changer matrix. This is a rack that holds 154 tools in plastic pots. A two-axis robot shuttles around and pulls tools off the shelf and feeds them into the machine. After a tool change it takes the previous tool and stores it back on the rack.
Kind of a neat contraption and I always figured I would have trouble with it but I never did.

Place looks a lot bigger with that machine gone. We spent a lot of time cleaning and decreasing that floor. When we were done it looked almost like new concrete.

Here's the new one being towed into place. That little yellow forklift is mine. They set the machine on skates. Two in the back and one in the front that is steerable via a t-bar. It is very slick how easy it is to move big things around when you have the right tools.

This new machine moves in such a high rapid rate that it must be lagged to the floor. I believe the acceleration is 1G. Threaded inserts are chemically anchored into the floor. Here you can see the foot that serves as a base for the anchor setup to clamp the machine to the ground.

And here it sits in its new home. Currently waiting for a technician to come and finish the installation.

I grabbed a shot of the tool carousel since the door was open and it was accessible. Unlike the last machine that had the large capacity storage and matrix setup this one is just a 64 tool onboard chain. It stages whatever tool is next and the arm swaps that tool with the one in the spindle in about 1.5 seconds.

Thanks for arm-wrestling with Flickr - I'm glad you posted a lot of photos! I'd seen a few of these on FB, but this is a much better overview of how much was involved in out with the old, in with the new.
