I was reconciling my bank account and found some charges for $12 for Reservation Rewards. Google it for the full story. My wife bought airline tix on Expedia and somehow got us "signed up" for this.

Make sure you are checking your bank account for unauthorized transactions. According to all the stuff I read online, its $12 or less, so its easy to slip by- or not worth the effort to investigate it more.

The bank got our money back, so we were luckly this time. They recommend a seperate checking account for online purchases, so you can identify theft more easily. Some people have been paying these charges for years without knowing!

A couple months ago B got a call from a credit watch agency that said there was suspicious activity on his account, but they wanted him to call back and verify his info.  They didn't identify what account or bank they were calling about.  So, we both thought it was a phishing call.

After thinking about it further, I suggested we both look over all our accounts to see if anything was amiss.  On one of his accounts had a $.26 charge that didn't make sense.   He tried calling the 800 number associated with the charge, but receive the message that the number was disconnected.  Immediate red flag.

I pushed him to go the bank directly and ask about the charge and the call.  Turns out the call about the suspicious activity was legit, our bank uses a third party to handle these calls, and he wasn't the only one that was charged.  The bank refunded the money and issued a new card.

It is imperative that everyone double check charges/credits on his/her accounts regularly to catch these little inconsistency.  $0.26 isn't a lot of money from one person, but if they managed to skim that off a million people, that's no chump change.

Some group in Arizona hit me a few years ago with a charge listed as "internet service" for $19.95.  They fleeced several million with that scam until they got busted.  My CC refunded the charges ~
