I've seen the aftermath on two bikes when a bolt come loose.

They slowly back out until the spring retainer catches on the cover, then it snaps the post off.

I don't think you could put enough torque on the 5mm bolt to snap the post.
Lots of folks have tried, and all that happened is they snapped the head off of the bolt.

ahhhhhhhh.  i can finally visualize it now; it's all making sense.  i'm stupid.  thanks Speeddog.

speeddog has it correct. if i was running with out a clutch cover then it would of just popped offm but it got caught and took the post with it.

i usually just finger tight all of them then tap each one with two fingers to make sure its snug, but i guess i missed one, :(

funny thing happened, as my friend was driving back from school, i stopped by the site where my clutch post snapped and pull over. i spend about 5 minutes looking for my part....

it was laying on the sidewalk, it looks like it was untouched by cars too (well, the damage looks lke it was caused when it snapped off) how cool is that? or how sad is it to see that nyc is really teh dirtiest city in the country.

also, i found this on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/Vee-Two-dry-clutch-basket-and-hub-Ducati_W0QQitemZ310136858914QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Motorcycle_Parts_Accessories?hash=item310136858914&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

emailed the guy, i need to know if its the same one desmo times is selling for $275!!! and this is with a basket! not sure if the basket is steel or aluminum, if its aluminum, its practically worthless to me as id wear it in out in no time.

edit:

Hub = 515 grams
Basket = 440 grams

paging taft. taft, paging taft. is this light weight enough? lol

If you found the post, weld it back on. If not, please send to me, I weld 'em on and give them to some of the local kids (and myself).

Will let you know as when the new one comes in (in a few months, since my huge stack of singles is going towards a new compressor). the only issue is, your going to have to rethread it. but im sure thats not a big issue for you

I find it funny that the one you didn't tighten was the marked one to tell you where to line up your pressure plate. I always start with that one. The little line compels me to.  [cheeky]
