Importing a Bike from US to Canada

Does anyone have experience importing a bike from the states into Canada? I'm trying to get a handle on the inspection process.

Im rebuilding my bike (with a new frame) and would like to pick up a frame from the US. Any input regarding the feasibility of this ( and costs, process etc) would be much appreciated.

at one point, I tried to buy a bike from Canada and the process was a virtual pain in the arse and I gave up....I can't imagine it being much easier in reverse....for the way I was going, you had to get documentation from the vehicle manufacturer of what parts are different and the part #'s for the conversion for to be compliant of US regs for both EPA and DOT and then had to have a federally certified person perform said modifications and provide the documentation of them being done, tested, and certified for approval and only then could you get the paperwork for to legally title the damn thing....

this is all from what I loosely recall from 7-ish years ago when I was looking to do this....

I don't know the details, but one of my friends bought a 900SS in the states and brought it into Canada with no issues.  I think it was stock or very close to stock.

Are you just bringing the frame over the border? Probably no problem doing that but registration may be a hassle. If you are bringing a complete bike it is pretty easy. There is paperwork required BEFORE you get to the border and then the appropriate fees etc are paid at the border. Easiest way is to find a broker to deal with that for you if you don't have the time.

I bought mine in the states and brought it to Canada. That was back in 2008 (I think), so my info might be a little out of date.  It wasn't difficult at all back then, but I think it's gotten a bit more complicated since.

i know it has 2 extra wheels but i imported a car last year from the US and it was a piece of cake. i had to share some of the icing but it was easy-peasy.

1 word. broker.

of course if iut just the frame it will be the registration, not the importation that you'll need to bake for.

Thanks for the replies. I might be pm'ing a couple of you if I run into any roadblocks.

A bit frustrated because the insurance companies designated the bike as "non-repairable" due to a a bent steering stopper tab (not sure about the technical term?). The tail chop may have had something to do with it too.
