Reading up on one of the threads about VHT, Magnus's had the '02+ crap paint', iirc, so perhaps that's the cut off.  I'm not sure... the 02 M900 motor definitely did have the light silver color on it.

I do know that the finesse put into the motor's finish, be it mating surfaces for gaskets or the casting / paint has changed over the years. Seems like the biggest winners are the black generator and clutch case covers as far as looking good further down the road. The silver color seems to stain really easy.  Also, the mating surfaces must be getting nicer and nicer - Doocati just keeps getting rid of old fashioned gaskets in favor of goop more often.  Nbd. I like goop, it stores easy... over there... in its... tooob.

The covers on my '99 M900 are that much darker gray or sometimes called 'green' (I think). They hide grime a good bit better than the light gray / silver OEM color, but man is a bit of rash on them really noticeable!  (same for when a bit of battery acid goes on to them, from say, that really shitty venting 16-series battery they used to come with... grumble grumble grumble)

Its not Ducatis fault that later paints are so poor it is due to EU regulations on chemicals in All paints having to be enviromentally friendly so the new paints are all compromised and mostly crap compared to older formulas.

I call bullshit.

The paint on tanks will hold up to solvents better than the crap they use on engines.

I say it is strictly a cost issue.

i don't really even care who is to blame, i just want nice black engine parts so my gas/oil/grime/dirt stains are hidden.

wife sez "not right now" or something similar. At least that is what I think she said, I wasn't doing a good job of paying attention.

The older motors have much better paint as far as solvent resistance goes.
And they don't seem to stain as easily....

The only thing that had damaged the paint on my '99 was acid from a battery boil over ~
