Should I be worried about this sound?

I took off my fairing just a minute ago and dropped the nut behind headlight. No big deal. Couple of shakes back and forth of the bars and it falls out. But when I shake the handle bars I hear a rattle in the tach area. Actually it sound like its in the bottom of the gauge. Kind of sound like a couple pieces of rice in there. The bike runs fine. Tach and everything works. Should I even mess with it?

I wouldn't bother it since everything else seems to work fine.

10. Bad decisions make good stories.

It's pretty common, IIRC there's a couple of plastic tabs inside that break off.

When enough of the tabs break off, the needles vibrate at speed/rpm.  Easy fix though.

Yup.  Just had my gauge apart for crash repairs and I'd been wondering the same thing for a couple of years.  There are some thin (key word there) plastic pieces that hold the servos that run the speedo and tach needles and they have a tendency to break off.  I took my gauges apart and put back together in half an hour so if you're feeling saucy you could do the same, but I wouldn't worry about it.
