i dont understand exactly what happened in that vid...aside from the part where the kids driving like a moron - looks like maybe he put his passenger side wheel off the road and couldn't get it back up before the turn? 

anyway, glad things didn't turn out any worse and I hope you make a quick recovery.  get back on the bike too

The kid in the vid.. Apart from the sloppy driver he is, it looks like he had the steering wheel turned, but the car kept going straight... May be other steering column damage was involved as well...

Getting blinded by the sun sucks... years back I almost ran into a freaking 12 yard dumpster in my old ass Subaru due to glare. It was Sunset out west (denver) and even creeping along at 15 mph or so on a side street I couldn't see the freaking thing until I was in it's shadow - which was way to close!

NP on the help man. It's easy to misinterpret what we are seeing initially when one is hurt/tired/frustrated. And a lot of the time folks think the dust seals are the oil seals - I did at first. Common mistake.

Alternator cover.
What is under it? Should I drain the oil first?
Also it has not leaked this whole week, is it because when the bike runs its full of oil that is under pressure?

Handle bars.
Anyone know which Renthal bars are similar to stock?
It is a little hard to measure whens its bent.

Yes drain the oil

The alternator is under the alternator cover  Also your fly wheel.

Drain before pulling it, or you'll be draining it all over the place when you do. It's probably not leaked as the oil has drained down into the sump, below the level of your hole. I'd expect it to start leaking again if you fired the engine. When the bike is running, you can see oil splashing onto the timing mark sight glass at the top of that case. So yeah the oil's moving around. It's probably not under pressure in the section where your damage is, as it's probably a cavity that leads to the sump area. But there's definitely pressurized oil in that area for the bearings supporting the crank behind the alternator/flywheel.

A super secret squirrel helped replace the cover as I did not have that special tool to remove the case.

Saw that coming. The driver said that a "misjudgment of the road caused the accident"  . The car comes over a decent sized hill right be for the turn. That causes the front end to go light and front wheels lose traction. That's why nothing happened when he turned the wheel.

everytime I watch this I not only think he was an idiot, but the person who taught him to drive was too.
He's using the steering wheel to hold his upper body in position, thereby any force on his body always turns the wheel, which is exactly why he crashed.

But I think Detroit is right, the front end got light over that last hill so he just didnt have enough weight on the front wheels to keep him on the pavement.

i've just rewatched it about 5 times. in fact I think the front was sliding when he hit the bottom, that's when he jerked it to the right. then when trying to correct, the crest lifted the front and yes... off the road...
