Fuel Line replacement

While removing the battery for the season, I managed to puncture the fuel line leading from the filter while lowering the tank back onto the frame.  I've noticed in the past that it sticks out when I raise the tank, but normally I'm careful to tuck it back behind the frame before closing.  I drained the tank and now need to replace the hose.  I've searched the forums and know that people frequently change the hoses, so I'd like to try it myself (between the tow and labor, my closest shop will charge over $200).  So two basic questions:
Should a complete novice attempt this?  Tips?  I'm thinking gas spraying over the engine if done improperly would be sub-optimal.
Where do you buy parts?  I thought a google search of "2000 Monster 750 fuel line" would turn up lots of options, but not so much.  Is any hose of similar dimensions acceptable?  I see that there's a spring inside the existing line, so I'm guessing it's a specialized part.  Thanks.

Define "complete novice."  Do you own a screwdriver and know how to use it?  If you do then this should be pretty straight forward. :)

Outside the tank fuel line (it does have to be fuel hose) is readily available at auto parts stores... if you are unsure of yourself, go to a NAPA store with the punctured hose in hand.

The spring is likely to prevent kinks, and can probably be rescued and installed in the new hose if you feel like it.

Or you could spend about $7 for an OEM hose.  Generic fuel hose will not kink as easy , so you will not need the spring.  Clamp the old hose at the fuel shut off end, remove hose and drain into a clean container bigger than the contents of the tank.

What Howie said.  I replaced my lines with about $5 worth of fuel hose from the local auto parts store.  Don't worry so much about outside diameter, but take your old hose so they can match your inside diameter so it fits properly on the existing fittings.
