I know this is REALLY an old post, but I had kept Desmowork's post in one of my Word documents as a reference note. I thought I had read elsewhere that the 696 Race ECU increased the rev limiter as well, from 8250 or 8500, to 9500+ but haven't found any concrete data.

I used to know the answer to this question off the top of my head, but I've long since forgotten.   I think rev limiter RPM increase only happened with a reflash.... but I wouldn't bet money on that.  How was that for a non-answer?

And.... why does it matter?

I don't really know that I would want to rev my 796 much past 8500rpm... even with standard tuning I don't know that there would be a lot there to justify it, unless you are going to track your bike.

FWIW, I put Arrow slips on my 796, all else being stock, and it was a huge improvement in driving and street-ability.  I've got a spare ECU I want the dealer to reflash... it is still running lean, of course... but I don't plan on bumping the RPM cap, even if it's possible.

M696 OEM is 9650 rpm.  DP would be the same.
