First I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to all who waded into this in spite of all of the previous threads that basically address this issue. You guys are the best!
I have this beaten,at least I hope I have! I added the bleeder to the master. Next, after more bleeding at both ends I pulled the slave again and pushed the piston all of the way into the housing. This resulted in no lever at all. I then proceeded to do an old fashioned pump and crack over and over, and a flurry of tiny bubbles started to appear. Encouraged by this I kept at it and viola! Proper lever feel! I rolled the bike out into the driveway, started it up, and put it into gear with no creeping, and neutral was a doddle to find. I drove it into the garage and it still worked, so I am tentatively declaring victory! All in all about 10 oz of fluid was used.
Thanks again for your help everyone, you're the best!
Best regards, Spike

I learned a new word "doddle". So I came out of this having learned something as well!  [laugh]

Glad it worked out!  [thumbsup]
