I'd like to replace the the phillips screws in the tail light lens with some socket head screws.  I've discovered however that the area of the reflector that the screws go into is tapered inside for the screw to 'bite' into.  The machine screws I got of course aren't tapered.

I thought about drilling it out but then I don't think the machine screw would bite enough.

And ideas?  I don't want to start drilling and ruin it.  Maybe drill them out a little then fill with some kind of silicone caulk or something for the machine screw to hold onto?

I agree- I don't think they'd bite enough either.  Can you drill all the way through and put a washer/nut on the back side?  seal it with a dab of silicone and call it good.
As a point of curiousity- whyfor you want to change dem george, huh, whyfor?

two reasons really.  1) i don't like how they look.  2) I'd rather have all allen head bolts.  those two phillips head screws just bug me peeking out of the lens.

with some judicious and careful application of drill bits to bore out the holes where the screws went, I got it to work.
